This story has a real charm about it. I stumbled upon it when looking for something else, then I intrigued and had to find out more.
Alien Girl wrote this story for inclusion in the X-Files Virtual Season (XFVS). This is separate to the VirtualSeasonX (VSx) which is still in (infrequent) production. I've included some stories from both series here before.
This virtual season was organised by Chris Munn and created to feature 'episodes' very much in line with the earlier seasons of the show, ie M/S partnership/friendship stories focusing on the paranormal. I've published a couple of the stories from the XFVS previously - Procedures and Gazzaniga, and have a few more that I prepared but haven't posted yet.
The XFVS is still available on angelfire, however, it came to a halt before completion. Only the first episode of Season 3 was published, but 4 more are 'coming soon'. As is often the way, real life undoubtedly intervened in the process of releasing the rest of the XFVS stories. "Animal Products" had to have come after the ones listed. I suspect that the (insert date) notations in the story were to allow it to be slotted into the XFVS date-wise. Judging by other dates I have found, this story would be placed in around June of 2000.
In looking at Alien Girl's website, I was surprised to discover that she was aged 15 when the website was created, probably around 1998-9, making her barely 18 when this was written. Her younger brother, Conner, also posted fanfic at age 8, so they appear to be a family of over-achievers. Her age only becomes apparent when she suggests that Mulder watched Milo and Otis when he was little... (it was released in 1986). I hope she was able to achieve her dreams of working in the creative industry and hope I didn't offend her too much by using AI to create the illustration for the cover. Sadly, my talents in that field are rather restricted.
