Truly Madly Deeply (Redux) cover

Mulder and Scully face the biggest adventure of all: Parenthood.

Where has Scully been, and why did she go there?

This story comprises four parts:
I: Runaway
II: Lights in the Sky
III: If Fates Allow
IV: Heaven and Earth

The links above will take you to the individual stories on AO3, or your can take the AO3 link to the left to the series page on AO3 where they're all linked. Remember to give Jenna some love when you're done. 🙂

Additional content warning in part IV for childbirth issues.

A special Mother's Day release that fits the UK theme. This is quite the adventure, with our agents trying to stay ahead of the bad guys.

Happy Mother's Day. I decided to throw in another bonus fic for the occasion. I'm actually releasing this story on Saturday night in my part of the world because this fic has its own bonus fic that I'll release tomorrow some time. Sometimes I get exhausted trying to keep track of everything...

Because this one's on AO3 I'm just doing the one-volume PDF & ePub as I find it far more convenient to read them together in one hit.

In my effort to find extra bits and pieces, I tracked Jenna down to her current website MissLucyJane.com. Jenna has posted some fanfic here, as well as links to her published work & a countdown to a new site launch on 31 May, 2023. It appears that she now exclusively focuses on gay romance fiction, so if that's your thing head on over.

TMD Carterhaugh - only click on this image if you have a burning curiosity.Unfortunately the second bonus I was considering didn't work out as I'd hoped. 🙁
I have the prologue and first five chapters of Part I of the barely-begun sequel, TMD: Carterhaugh. It did have me sucked in and I wanted to find out more about that door, but alas, the story hadn't progressed far enough to feel like it could even be used as an epilogue. It matters not, as TMD I-V provide adequate satisfaction, and were already an immense accomplishment for the author.

I'm not 100% certain on the main cover artist. It's not credited like the one by Sammy, so although the colour scheme is similar, I think it's Jenna's.  (I did add Jenna's name to the bottom on the 'official' cover because it wasn't there and gave me a good excuse to make the aspect ratio 3:4, as is my compulsion).

Mercury Falling by C Slatton

185,000 Words

Mercury Falling online cover

It's 1988 and Wheeling, West Virginia has serial killer on the loose. One who kills to attract the attention of a very exclusive audience: a young, hotshot profiler named Fox Mulder. But that's not Mulder's only problem for the moment. In fact, the killer may just have to get in line...

A very elaborate look at a younger Fox Mulder: profiling hotshot and total nutcase. So much is explained in this story about how Mulder came to be the brilliant but distrusting and somewhat paranoid person we see in the show.

It also answers a few questions you never thought to ask. Or is that what a dream is supposed to do? 🙂

The original online version of the story also had images in each chapter. Most images weren't saved, so I've had to guess from their file names & surrounding text etc what they were.

This fic was so beloved that it even had its own shrine on ArcticFox42's site. I've added a couple of the images below.

Specimen 51 by WestShore

63,000 Words

Specimen 51 cover
A woman scientist, faced with a personal life crisis, discovers a mysterious young prisoner who needs her help to recover what was taken from him -- his memories. In return, the handsome stranger helps her to learn that memories and fears are not the sum total of who we each are.

WestShore's stories are typically Mulder!Torture-centric and this is no exception. This time Mulder has taken time off for a vacation when he ends up in trouble, so Scully is initially unaware and doesn't feature prominently in the story, which is told by a third-party. This may be why Mulder prefers not to take his vacation time...

Operation Clean House by Sarah Segretti & Won and Lost by Branwell

4,300 Words

Operation Clean House cover

Operation Clean House: A lost scene from an unfilmed episode. Colonization looms. A stolen moment on the tarmac. In medias res.

Won & Lost: I read “Operation Clean House” and later realized the perfectly imagined farewell scene was haunting me. Artistically it is note perfect as it stands. In my weakness I yearned for emotional closure. Sarah kindly consented to my attempting a sequel. This is it.

A couple of touching vignettes by Sarah Segretti & Branwell. It's off to war with the colonists and the mood is intense.

There's a Dustjacket for Won & Lost as well, by Frohike:

Won & Lost cover

BTW, if you're a bit confused because I said I was going to post a different fic today, it's been moved to Friday.

Vengeance by Juliettt

67,000 Words

Vengeance cover

A sequel to Anasazi. What happened after the explosion sealed Mulder in that boxcar at the end of the episode?

This was written in the seemingly never-ending break after the season 2 cliffhanger. Juliettt felt the need to get Mulder out of that boxcar. She's coerced Jackie St George & Martin Nantus to stay with Scully to ensure she doesn't do anything stupid. These characters were created by Sheryl Nantus, and appear in many of her stories and those of other authors. They do reflect the innocence of the early series. After all that's happened since then it can be hard to picture those early days where Mulder and Scully may have been able to have loyal friends other than the paranoid Gunmen.

Another PG story... I'll have to bring all the smut on Friday.

Injuries to the Spirit by MystPhile

49,000 Words

Injuries to the Spirit cover

Injuries to the Spirit: Scully is captured by a psychopath; Mulder  investigates. The story explores the effects of being held captive by a madman.

Injuries Redux: In the aftermath, Scully prepares to testify and, with
Mulder's support, attempts to come to terms with her experience.

CW: There is some really disturbing imagery to do with a child in this one.

I'm feeling so much better now that I've not just uploaded, I've gone with major torture. I wish I could get Scully to my psychologist, she's a miracle worker. 🙂

This one is a rough one, and for those who need a smut payoff after tolerating torture, you may wish to skip this story and come back Wednesday for the top shelf PWP I have scheduled.

Dark Seed by bugs

120,000 Words

Dark Seed cover

The remaining members of the Consortium have a new, desperate plan. Mulder and Scully are at the center of these machinations, and they struggle to deal with the intimate relationship that results.

CONTENT WARNING: This story contains mature subject matter, including sexual situations, violence, and imagery that may be disturbing to sensitive readers.

Contains all three books.

This can be quite the dark story at times. It's an often uncomfortable Mulder and Scully, floundering a little to find their place in each other's worlds with all the changes thrust upon them by the consortium, but they do find their stride often enough to satisfy.  They do get put through a few trials though, and there are a few twists and turns at the end to keep you on the edge. It's definitely worth a read. I even managed to make it through the pregnancy/baby factor completely unscathed.

Rags by J Selby

21,000 Words

Rags cover

Skepticism is put to the ultimate test when Mulder and Scully investigate some bizarre and seemingly unrelated events in a small town.

Just a brief break from all the smut for a very canon-like case file with shades of light-heartedness  and angst.

Secret World by Bonetree

147,000 Words

Scully goes deep undercover to find the secret behind a mysterious death. But with what she learns, will she ever be able to come in from the cold?

!Please check the content warnings

A Scully-centric fic that plays to Scully's strengths without turning her into a saint. Meanwhile, poor Mulder is struggling with the separation, and Skinner is having headaches trying to keep him out of trouble.

Bonetree writes a compelling story with some fascinating characters. As Scully gets deeper into the case, we feel Mulder's angst and desperation over his lack of control.  There's also some wonderful Mulder-doctoring and caring for an injured Scully, and of course, some considered smut.

Soap and Eggs by EPurSeMouve

47,000 Words

Soap & Eggs cover

Soap And Eggs: A possible future. A might-have-been. A what-if. Or a "There but for the grace of God...."

Soap and Eggs II: An Ivory-White Christmas: A solitary Christmas in San Francisco, California.

Soap and Eggs III: A Grade-AA Valentine's Day: The stage is set for the final conclusion.

Soap and Eggs IV: Suds And Shells: Sometimes, it's hard to decide when to settle for life's leftovers.

*BONUS* Soap and Eggs Happy Ending : This doesn't officially exist. According to EPur "this isn't a part of the Soap and Eggs series. It's just me fooling around, describing on paper what kind of ending the sap in me always wanted." It was exclusive to EPur's website. If you want to remain true to the spirit of the series you can skip it, but if you're human you'll definitely want to read this.

!CW: character death (Not M or S).

If you're after a happy holiday story, look elsewhere!!!

EPurSeMouve stabs you in the heart with this one. Then twists the knife. Then rips it right out of your body and stomps on it. There is a band-aid for you at the end though.

This season 4 end-of-the-X-Files imagining isn't really a whole lot worse than what Chris Carter did to them after "The Truth". It always bothered me when I thought of how difficult their lives would be on the run. The only difference then was that at least they had each other. I'm going to stop now before I cry again. Just make sure you're in a safe place before reading this.

This was one I'd originally intended to release at Halloween, but I was out gallivanting around the country instead. Never mind, it's a late Halloween, almost-Christmas and early Valentine's story.

Inferno Series by Pellinor

196,000 Words

Inferno cover

Inferno: Mulder gets drawn into a web of guilt and revenge that could rob him of his sanity, even his life. Both Scully and Mulder think they know what they are dealing with, but the truth is something neither of them have ever expected.

Purgatorio: Three months on, and Mulder shows no signs of even attempting to come to terms with what happened to him in "Inferno," and Scully begins to feel the strain of having to constantly sacrifice her own needs to the needs of her desperately unhappy partner. Things come to a head on a murder case when Scully simply can not accept Mulder's theory. Will their partnership survive?

Paradiso: While Scully attempts to undo the damage wrought by recent events, Mulder gets drawn into a web of intrigue that could lead him to the truth, but could just as easily destroy him.

Journey back to a difficult time in Season 3, after Paper Clip, where our agents seemed to have trouble finding a middle ground.  They're miles apart when they're sent away for a case, and things don't improve in a hurry.

No MSR, but lots of angst and MulderTorture.  Strap yourself in, because it's a bit of a rough ride for Mulder and Scully in this one. One for the angst addicts.

Fugue by RivkaT

26,000 Words

Fugue cover

This one's a bit unusual as RivkaT wants you to read the opening scene before you get to read the summary. The only hint before reading is "It's not what you think. At least, I hope not."

Trust me, it's worth reading the first scene to get to the summary.

RivkaT starts this one with our agents hot and heavy.  It does get progressively more angsty as they find themselves in a dangerous predicament.  An excellent fic.  There are some mild dubcon elements if you overthink it, so try not to overthink it.

Paradise Lost + Walking Through Fire by Bardsmaid

89,000 Words

PL WTF cover
Part of the Sanctuary series:

Paradise Lost: Mulder is dismissed from the Bureau on trumped-up charges of having had contact with the X-files. Stripped of his driving motivation as well as his job, he's forced to look critically at his life. Scully, reassigned to a teaching position at Quantico, must balance her new responsibilities with her concern about her former partner's well-being. And Alex Krycek insinuates himself into Mulder's life for reasons that are not immediately apparent.

Walking Through Fire: Determined to gain reinstatement at the Bureau, Mulder searches for a way to bring Cancer Man down while also confronting the grim reality of unemployment, and Scully's responsibilities increase as she juggles her new assignment with her continued support of her ex-partner's quest. But Skinner requests her forensic expertise in an ongoing investigation, saddling her with an additional burden that may prove more than she can bear. A ghost from Teena Mulder's past prompts her to finally open up to her son, though the information she offers has the potential to crush him. And Alex Krycek inadvertently provides the evidence Mulder needs to foil the Smoking Man.

The Sanctuary Trilogy+ is a masterpiece of fanfic by Bardsmaid. She appeared to have a real sense of comfort with the characters and not only  did she make existing characters her own, she created rich, real characters that could have changed the trajectory of the show post Season 7 if only CC & co had thought of them.  I can't help but wonder what S8 would have been like had they introduced a character like Agent Wilkins who was eager to help rather than antagonise.

This series diverges from canon at the beginning of Season 6, so all the usual favourites are involved in a complex mytharc plot.  Take some time off and really immerse yourself in this one.

There are 4 parts to this series, which I've spit into three volumes. Whilst the Sanctuary Trilogy itself was completed, Topaz, the sequel Bardsmaid was writing at the time of her passing was not, but is included here as an optional extra.

Bardsmaid's website is still available at bardsmaid.org, and her original images can be found there and in the attached epub/pdf versions. New covers are included here due to the tiny size of the original pics.

PS  Leland is a much better name for CSM. He's so not a 'Carl'.

Boundless by Meredith

Boundless cover

Under extreme emotional circumstances, no one’s actions are predictable.

This week's hump day fic isn't a straight PWP. Still, it's a shorter fic, with an angst that builds with increasing pressure until the release at the end.  It's a compact fic for those who like a side of pain with their MSR.

Emotional Risk by Exley_61

16,000 Words

Emotional Risk cover

Mulder & Scully are weathering the storm of loves emotional risks, will they survive the deluge?

Mulder notices that Scully has disconnected from their relationship and encourages her to face what's wrong. Whilst my preference is for first time fics, Exley does magical things in the raising of the angst levels of this one to maintain the intensity.

I decided to go a little full-smut with this dustjacket, sorry. I've attempted to make it artistic though 😀 I admit to going full-smut often, I usually just don't post those images or hide them behind more acceptable things...

By popular demand, I have started a secret page at x-trash for the smutty images underneath some of the covers. You can find it here. The password is "smut".

Anamorphosis by Eponine119

106,000 Words

Anamorphosis cover

Assigned to find a horrifying serial murderer, Agent Scully discovers things about herself and her past that she never suspected.

Anamorphosis - Greek, to form anew. "the unfoldment of destinies follows ...upon the fall of outer circumstances...[a] substantial event was actually but a veil, a tissue of circumstance, conjured forth or the realization of a plot already formed." [Joseph Campbell, Creative Mythology]

!Numerous content warnings apply: child sexual abuse, recovered memories, rape (not described), suicidal ideations, dissociative disorder.

I know some of you like Scully!Torture, alongside Mulder!Caring of course, and Eponine119 certainly delivers in this one. She throws everything imaginable and worse at Scully in this story. Eponine does take some liberties with the Scully family, but they're entirely believable and usually make more sense than canon. If you like some pain with your MSR, this story will give you plenty of that.

Once upon a time there was a cover created by Mystic, but I can't get my hands on it. 🙁

Complications Trilogy by Sarah Kiley

308,000 Words

Complications Cover

Complications: After Mulder is in a car accident, Scully continues her investigation in an effort to save him.

Second Chances: Four months after being arrested, Mulder breaks out of prison and seeks Scully's help in clearing his name. To do so, they must make a cross-country trip on the run from the law while Scully has second thoughts about marrying another man. Could this be Mulder and Scully's second chance?

Last Dance: Mulder's messing with something he shouldn't be.

This is an epic early story, beginning in Season 2, so it involves some characters  who never made it far into Season 3.  It's quite a complicated story, to match its name, as it involves time travel and parallel universes, which always make my head spin. It can get quite concerning MSR-wise at points, but you have to trust that they'll find a way.  But I admit to being very glad that an epilogue was added...

All covers are by Sarah.

Another cover for Complications, this one's from the Annex.

Light from Shadows by Writergal2000

79,000 Words

Light From Shadows cover

Waking up in a deserted park in the middle of the night, Mulder's mind is a blank. As he and Scully struggle to put the pieces of his memory together, evidence builds into a criminal case against Agent Mulder. While the partners search for the truth, Mulder begins to doubt his own innocence.

(I know, reminiscent of Demons, but too great an episode not to parallel.  This is different in its own right -- trust me.)

!Content Warning: There are quite detailed descriptions of sexual assault by or of Mulder, (depending on the POV).

It's not hard to think of Demons when the story begins, but it soon takes you to a whole 'nother place.  Mulder has a hard time fighting accusations against him, not knowing how much of it's true. But, honestly, either Mulder needed a better lawyer or I watch too many true crime shows. 😉

Path of Thorns (The) by Smurf

53,000 Words

Path of Thorns cover

Through a tragic experience, Scully learns that the path of thorns cannot be walked alone.

This is another fic that seems to have fallen into the black hole of the internet, and only it's dustjacket remained to let me know of its existence.

Smurf goes all out on the angst and the Scullytorture in this one. Scully battles with her human frailty, and Mulder's there to support her when she eventually allows it.

Vox Series by Catwoman

17,000 Words

Vox sereis cover

Vox: This story’s been running around in my head since I first saw ‘All Souls’, and when I watched it again tonight I knew I had to write this down. See, as with many of this seasons angst-infested episodes, ‘All Souls’ made me feel physically sick, just because of the general unfairness of it all. We know from the episode that the events in the episode also made Scully sick, emotionally if nothing else. I would guess that Scully was haunted by the events of the episode, and will continue to be haunted by them, for quite some time afterward. Well, I think it’s about time Mulder sees what losing Emily has done to Scully, and what he’s doing to aggravate the hurt.

Wait: Nobody ever forgets where a hatchet is buried. Sequel to ‘Vox’.

Ice: Basically Mulder and Scully are just going to spend this entire story just bitching and moaning at each other angrily. If you’re not into that sort of thing, back out now. I’m warning you–MAJOR ANGST!!!

Red: Final story in the Vox Series. Mulder and Scully get a clue.

Although not a direct post-ep for 'All-Souls', this fic details how the chronic ScullyTorture in Season 5 may have affected Scully and impacted the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

This Thing of Darkness by Tara Avery

52,000 Words

This Thing of Darkness cover

It was supposed to be a simple investigation of a serial killer... until the mind of the killer was made known. Mulder struggles against truths and lies in the mind of a murderer, while Scully fights against shadows and conspiracies for the sanity of her partner.

Content Warning: Profiler!Mulder is violent towards Scully a number of times in this story.

Tara writes beautifully, so at least while she's putting you through an emotional wringer you can appreciate that she's doing it with such vivid imagery.  😉  This is one for the angst addicts. Be prepared to hurt for a while.

Veritas Nullus by Janet

31,000 Words

Veritas Nullus cover

Scully is raped in Mulder's apartment and Mulder is shot by her gun. Is he the assailant?

!Content Warning - Rape. (Actually it's quite graphic so I've marked the particular scene should you wish to avoid it.)

Mulder has to fight for his innocence after being accused of serial rape in this intriguing and angsty plot by Janet.

Fish on the Hook by Writergal2000

Book One: Mulder and Scully have to fight for their positions on the X-Files.

Book Two:  Part One - Thanksgiving + Part Two  - Christmas (to Chapter 14 - last updated Dec 12, 2004)

Although this edition has an additional part to those available at Gossamer, it comes incomplete. While it didn't make it to its final destination, it does have a satisfactory ending.

Book One of this series is a doozy. Full of delicious angst and heartbreak after Mulder and Scully are caught in a compromising position.

It does lose momentum in Book Two, probably because it never made it to where it was going; Book Two and the planned Book Three were never completed. You may want to stick with Book One only, but it's worth adding the opening of Book Two as an epilogue, both for the humour and to know where things ended up after the preceding angstfest. 😉

Exploring Desires by K Benton

100,000 Words

Exploring Desires cover

When Mulder and Scully work with a new agent, his entry into their lives causes months of intense angst for everyone involved.

Content Warning: non-consensual sexual situations, deviant sexual situations, physical control, coercive control, violence. Some scenes are marked, including a court scene which may be especially distressing for rape survivors.

This starts with Scully dating another agent before discovering it's Mulder she really wants. From there things get dark.  Unless you're particularly sensitive, you shouldn't let the content warning put you off - just be prepared to hurt a little.

Haunted Moon by Stephanie K

29,000 Words

Haunted Moon cover

Mulder and Scully find themselves lost and in trouble one night under a haunted moon. But when it's all over and done, can they find love?

Of course they can!

Stephanie has a twisted mind and tortures our agents accordingly. They deserve all the smut they can get after this.

Verlassen Series by TexxasRose

67,000 Words

Verlassen cover

Verlassen: The knowledge Mulder receives from an informant is more dangerous than ever before. How much will he sacrifice to guarantee Scully's safety?

Guarded Secrets: It’s been two months since Mulder’s return from Verlassen, and he is almost fully recovered. Just as things seem to be working out for the happy couple, danger strikes again from unexpected sources.

Once again, TexxasRose brings on the Muldertorture, then she ups the stakes when things are starting to go well and tortures them both. There's a little actual torture involved as well as the beginnings of sexual assault, but nothing too graphic. Mulder gets a kitten, so that should make up for the unsavoury events. 😉

Shadow Series by TexxasRose

Shadow Series cover

Somebody loves Mulder a little too much...

All hail, TexxasRose, Queen of Muldertorture!

I'm surprised that it's taken me 2 years to post some TexxasRose fics, as she was quite prolific in her writing, although she had numerous name changes at the time in an effort to avoid her own personal stalker.  She was also a long time keeper of Mulder in Jeopardy.

This stalker series focuses on Mulder this time, and has lots of twists and turns for your enjoyment.

Nightscape by Kristel St Johns

Nightscape cover

This story is an unofficial sequel to Anne Haynes' 12 Degrees of Separation but can be read on it's own. Our duo are married and getting on with their lives together when the unexpected happens.

!Content warning for reproductive issues

This one's Kristel's first fanfic.  I'm not a massive fan of M/S Married stories, but there's nothing mundane about this. Kristel keeps the angst all the way up throughout.  Be prepared to have your heart strings vigorously tugged on.

Some more Scully Torture. This one can get rough at times, and there are a couple of awkward Mulder moments, but I think it's worth it for the climax 😉  Desideratum III felt a little OOC for my liking, but it's pretty much just smut so it doesn't matter too much.

Lost Series, The by Wintersong

204,000 Words

Lost series cover

The Lost: Mulder and Scully are trapped in the remote wilderness and the art of surviving was not what they expected.

The Found: In the midst of an explosively escalating serial arson case, Mulder and Scully must come to terms with the changes that six months in the wilderness have wrought in themselves and those around them.

Alphas: Mulder, Scully and the rest of the X-Files Division struggle with new realities and the changing of old relationships when the reopening of a closed murder investigation draws them into a shadowy culture thousands of years old.

This starts with an unforgettable story of Scully and Mulder's survival in the woods having been taken there by a perp.  Scully's strength and ingenuity keeps them alive before they're ultimately reunited with civilisation.  Once they return they're forced to San Diego to help with a case involving Scully's brother.   Then finally they have to face themselves and each other.

Covenant cover

Covenant:  Mulder & Scully have to come to term with some changes.  Takes place before Leonard Betts.

Covenant II: Monsters: Sequel to "Covenant". While exploring all the levels of their 'new' partnership Scully takes on a case involving deaths strange enough no one can deny they are X-Files. Their only link, abused children. Their only lead. A child who can see Mulder. Not all Monsters live in closets.

Covenant III: Death and the Maiden: This is a bonus extra for those who can't get enough glowing blue Mulder, but it WAS NEVER COMPLETED. The extra 7,000 words are not included in the overall word count.

This is a classic fic by Rhondda, but I never knew it continued after the original story until it was mentioned recently on facebook.  I then discovered a part 3, but sadly it was shelved so Rhondda could finish other ongoing stories and never picked back up. Consequently you won't find it online.

I'm pretty sure JJ (cover artist) is Julie Jekel, but I'm too tired to delve into confirming that right now.

All Hallow's Eve cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

Driving back to Washington on Halloween evening Mulder and Scully see strange lights in the sky over rural Maryland, stop to investigate, and find themselves spending a night they will not soon forget.

This one started out fairly painlessly, but Sue pushed the angst up each year as she added a new volume and sucked us in further.  But wait, there's more! There's also a shorter story called "The Messenger" that works as an epilogue which I'll post separately as it fits into a few of the different universes that Windsinger was writing at the time.  (There's a Cliff's notes guide to all the series involved at the end of that fic so you can follow it without having to read every story. )

Undercover cover

Mulder and Scully go undercover to try and gain evidence against a suspect. However, things don't go to plan and something happens to Scully. Both of their lives become endangered. Will things turn out for the best?

The M rating is for drug use and violence. Unfortunately.

There's a lull in cases so Scully volunteers herself to go undercover to catch a drug dealer/murderer, and of course Mulder has to go too.  They have to push themselves to stay in character and it takes a toll, with ever-increasing angst as they put themselves in more danger.

After a heated argument, Mulder and Scully find themselves in a living hell, not literally, thankfully. This story is about self-indulgence, drowning sorrows and somehow, reaching salvation after all. Set during "One Son".

"One Son" fic is my all time favourite.  On top of the Fowley angst I love the intensity of the seething feelings of betrayal after Mulder's "making it personal" comment.   This fic takes advantage of that and it's nothing if not personal.

I've now added a PDF version in case FFnet goes belly-up. There have been rumours for a while so best to be sure 🙂

Parts of this are really tough to read, but it's an important contributor to the acute Profiler!Mulder-torture,  and to a lesser degree, the Scully-torture.

This is an MSR, but Skinner also gets lucky. (Skinner feels like my dad, so I'd rather not know about what he does in his spare time, but  this wasn't gagworthy at all 😀  Maybe the other horrors made it all pale in comparison.)

I spent 6 days camping in a spectacular World Heritage area, and this is what I read. Go figure. Needless to say I took a couple of breaks, and I had to read a lot of PWP afterwards to recover.  Enjoy  😉

I'm very happy to report that I've just turned up Spider's original artwork for this fic, which I've now added below. I was also surprised to discover that she lived in the neighbouring town to me back in the day. I feel like I came within reach of basking in some of Sonny's limelight. 😀

Road (Going Nowhere) Series by Nicole Perry

165,000 Words

Road Series 1
Part of the Road Series Universe series:

Scully is injured in a blast in which lives are lost. She was the target, so she and Mulder take off, knowing also that that they will be blamed. The pair travel the width of the country in an effort to escape those who are after them.

This starts as a short story, set in Season 3, but it quickly gets out of hand and ends up as an epic series.

From Nicole (in Goin' Nowhere): This is a dark story that I love.  It was wild -- the idea literally leaped into my mind this morning and plagued me all day. It was all I could do to get home and write it down.

The stories include:

  1. Goin' Nowhere
  2. Passing Through
  3. At the Blue Hotel
  4. Down the Tracks
  5. A Divided Highway
  6. City Limits*

*City Limits is an incomplete WIP. I've put a note at the end of the completed stories so you can decide whether or not you'd like to leave them in a happy place or continue on. City Limits has only 5 chapters posted, and remains eternally incomplete.

It's sad that this epic series remains unfinished, but I can't even imagine what it would be like to work on a project for this many years, so I'm totally surprised that Nicole managed to put out as much as she did.

I'm not really a fan of the premise of this fic, but this is well written and didn't bother me for some reason.

I'm uploading another story, written by Wendy Wiliams, called "Cul-de-Sac" for anyone who needs something light hearted when they get to the end. This story is in the Roads Series universe, and is a humourous meta-based fic with a cameo from Nicole and a cast of characters from the Order of the Blessed Saint Scully the Enigmatic. It was authorised by Nicole, so could technically be considered canon...  It begins at the end of A Divided Highway.

Your end is your beginning is your end.

Oh the angst. What's a girl to do when her new lover decides to push her away to save her from himself? Go to Hawaii and setlle, that's what. But is that what she really wants?  Maybe, maybe not.  Spoiler: the answer isn't yes.

Well colour me surprised. I thought I'd uploaded this one ages ago.

There was a cover for this one by Kimpa, but only the thumbnail remains, which I've quadrupled in size here so you can see it.  I wish images saved better on the wayback machine. 🙁

What if Mulder wasn't told that Scully's cancer had gone into remission?

I found another PG fic! In this one bully boy Bill Scully Jr is at his blustering best, resulting in pain for all involved, including me.

I didn't realise it was also on FF.net until after I'd already edited and uploaded the files, so you get lots of options for this one. 🙂

Remember Me? by Caroline O

Book Cover: Remember Me? by Caroline O

Mulder and Scully have been forcibly separated from each other for fifteen months. Scully has a new life, but no knowledge of her previous one.

Happy Mother's Day to mothers of all descriptions. A bonus fic for the occasion: this fic is one that's even enjoyable for those of us who don't do kidfic.  Scully has a baby, and a partner, but it's not all as it seems. There are many twists and turns to keep you reading.

Mulder gets car-jacked, and after recovering enough to go back to temporary desk work doing profiles, finds out he's better than ever-- which has it's own problems-- and that certain people don't appreciate that.

Future relationship in the making. Lots of Mulderangst.

Intense Mulder!torture of the mind.  The talented Theresa from mindseye.tcjahn.com also illustrated this fic.

This story has also been recently uploaded to AO3 by a fan, so I've added an additional link to read it there.

Through a series of diaries, Mulder and Scully’s granddaughter discovers a legacy rich with love and sacrifice. BTW, Mulder and Scully do play a prominant role in this story.

This one was a recommendation that I've had on my "to read" list forever but haven't read yet.  I'm doing a bit of a guess on some of the tags.

This was a really difficult one to format as the original text formatting didn't transfer well.  I've done my best to get the others as close as I can to the .txt file, but if you're a cheater like me who has an e-reader read books to you out loud, you might have to remove the line breaks yourself.  I've gone for presentation above the voice-bot's readability because I don't think anyone else is crazy enough to have a screen-reader (aka porn-bot) read stories to them while they're at the supermarket.

After the fire destroyed the basement office, Mulder and Scully were split up and go separate ways. A year and a half later they meet again and Scully discovers a terrible secret about Mulder. Determined to rebuild their relationship, she must first face her main adversary: her ex-partner himself.

Angst-o-rama after the two agents are separated.  Dr Scully has to rescue Mulder from himself. Sadly there's no smut in this one, just intense angst and DAL. I didn't realise this was on ff.net until I went to publish it, so you get a bonus source. 🙂

Caught in the Act series by Parrotfish

40,000 Words

Book Cover: Caught in the Act series by Parrotfish

I: A secret is revealed, threatening to permanently dissolve the partnership between Scully and Mulder.

II: No Win Situation: Their affair revealed, Mulder and Scully have been given new partners. His is bad, and hers is worse. Together, they must suffer through the power games of their professional lives while learning a very different lesson about power in their private lives.

III: Sub Rosa: Mulder and Scully go undercover to rescue a kidnapped child from a white supremacist militia group. Success could mean the salvation of the duo’s partnership — if it doesn’t destroy them first.

Note - the third story in this series is far heavier than the others and concerns an undercover situation that Mulder and Scully find abhorrent, causing much angst. Viewer discretion (and expectation adjustment) is advised.  Please read the author's notes for more information.

Some character exploration/erotica with angst, glorious angst.  Particularly in the last story.

You know you're dealing with very old text files when you have to mess with the editing of line breaks to force paragraphs to show.  Normally unnecessary carriage returns are removed when it converts to epub (and then pdf) but when it's been written on a particularly old computer all carriage returns are removed and you just get a huge block of text.  It's not pretty, and hopefully I've noticed others before posting.  Occasionally I know there's the odd orphan end of a sentence, but that really can't be helped because manually proofreading is above my paygrade! 😀

From the Ashes by J Greco

60,000 Words

Book Cover: From the Ashes by J Greco

When Mulder is accused of sexual assault by a confused young girl, it begins an odyssey which will cause him to doubt every aspect of his life. But as Scully works to find out the hidden truth behind the events, Mulder realizes that she is the one truth upon which he can always rely.

Jamie finds a number of imaginative ways in which to torture Mulder, and Scully is the only one he can trust to help him through an extremely difficult time.  There's lots of love in this one - no smut - but it doesn't seem to be lacking.  It's a sensitive, heartwrenching (but somehow at the same time heartwarming) novel that draws our agents closer together.  Note - there are references to sexual assault but no gory details.

Jamie's Mulder is spot on with his comebacks.  His ability to make light of a situation with lines like “I have to admit, Scully, punching me in the face seems to be more than the passing fad I had originally hoped” adds some levity to  an otherwise angsty fic.

Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

83,000 Words

Book Cover: Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

This story was originally a short post-Kitsunegari vignette. Then by request, Shalimar kept adding parts until it became this masterpiece.  One of the (multitude of) big plot holes of The X-Files that was never addressed by the 1013 writers was the fetus, created from Scully's egg, that Mulder discovered during the episode "Emily." Nor was the emotional fallout of that episode, and its startling revelations, on their partnership ever dealt with during the series.  "Five Years and One Night" addresses both of those issues, through the creation of an alternative universe that begins in the aftermath of "Kitsunegari", then takes off into its own complicated plot-line six months later, when Mulder arrives to disrupt the carefully reordered life that Scully has created for herself across the continent, away from him and the X-Files. An emotional tale, set in the exotic surroundings of Singapore.

I decided that I just had to post this story, but I'm happy to remove it on request.  I'm counting on the fact that it's 21 years old now and if Shalimar ever even thinks of the story any more, she'd be happy to know that it's still being enjoyed.  This is super-angsty Emily fallout fic, with loads of action including some wild and frenzied adult action. It's definitely a classic.

Preponderance (Books 1 & II)

Guilt is painted in shades of grey. When Scully is involved in a serious crime, how will Mulder react?

This fic is a meal of angst and emotional torture, with a side order of smut.  Alanna sets our agents on an extremely emotional journey, with a divide that seems impossible to bridge.  But have faith.

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

46,000 words

Book Cover: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

Scully and Mulder argue over the Ephesian case and come to a new understanding about their relationship.

This is a bit of an angstfest from Ryo Sen, who keeps us teetering on the edge. The ending is probably a little bit on the sappy side for my taste, but for those into more of a smutfest than an angstfest, I've also posted Jenna Tooms' "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" for you. This one's set after "The Field Where I Died", an ep that needed a little fixing. It's also a reminder that Teena Mulder didn't actually have a name for a very long time meaning authors had to make one up, and Ann, being Samantha's middle name, was a popular choice. Mulder's mother is also rather out of character considering what we knew of her later, so put on your Sarah McLachlan CD and get your mind to shift back to early season 4...

PS There is a character death but it happened in canon too.

No Greater Love by Karen Rasch

Book Cover: No Greater Love by Karen Rasch

Mulder and Scully travel to a small town in Missouri to investigate a series of deaths involving a faith healer. Along the way, questions are raised concerning their relationship and their feelings towards matters of the spirit.  Winner of multiple 1996 Spooky awards.

I feel a bit dirty after posting so much smut during my recent brain-fog issue, so now that I'm feeling a little better I thought I'd continue with some fics with a little more substance (ie plot).  This one is an USTy classic from Karen.  The tension is almost at breaking point.  There's lots of Scully-angst, thanks to the Emily arc, and therefore Mulder-angst-by-proxy, plus some more angst thrown in for good measure.  You might need tissues for some of the angsty but sweet MSR moments.

Some feelings defy the confines of time.

Rachel notes that "This story deals with time travel in a completely illogical and scientifically inaccurate way. Scully would shudder at this."  I don't know if it's possible to deal with time travel in a logical way; I can never get my head around it. 😀   Nevertheless it's a love story, with a character death that needs to be made right.  The time travel doesn't go exactly as planned, but does result in hot monkey lovin' so that's all that really matters.

It's hard enough when your mistakes come back to haunt you. Harder still when you're a federal agent. Hardest yet when your partner's help is the first thing you need, but the last thing you want ...

Glorious angst.  18 months after Never Again, Ed Jerse returns to taunt Scully in this gripping tale. It's one that's hard to put down so free up some time to indulge yourself.  There is a character death, but it's not one most people would cry over. I can't remember whether it's before or after Fight the Future, so I guessed.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This one is dark, folks. This ain't "Hog Heaven", put it that way. I'm not an FBI agent or a murderer, so my details may be off, but my heart's in the right place. I wish you could buy what Mulder gets Scully, but I've never seen one. It does have a happy ending and it's LONG, but complete.

Jess proves to have a truly evil mind in this fic beginning the morning after 'Millennium'. .

Mulder and Scully struggle with issues of trust and betrayal during and after the events after Fight the Future.

It includes:

  • Betrayal From Within
  • Betrayals From Without
  • The Ultimate Betrayal
  • Even the Strong Will Crumble

Some extra angst for the Easter break.

This is a masterful series by Katherine Benton that sees some major changes in Mulder and Scully's personal and professional lives, and tugs on the heartstrings a little. This is the only fic I've read that deals, among other things, with Mulder's discovery that his body was used for sex without his consent during Dreamland.  It's a deliciously angsty fic, with far better use of the Mytharc than the show gave us (not that that's difficult).

"Honest to God, I meant to ease her into it; I never meant to blurt it out like that. You’d think, after seven years and countless bizarre cases, I would have learned my lesson. But I was so excited; so anxious to get my teeth into this one, I forgot to be diplomatic – forgot to use my head instead of my heart. I had spent the weekend going through all the files and the plethora of information I’d found, on the Web and in B. Dalton’s; I’d taken notes, collected documented testimonials from folks who had decided to talk about what they knew of this particular organization… by the time Scully hit the basement on Monday, I was so wired that she never had a chance.

Posing as my little wifey, and involving herself in what could be considered 'deviant sexual cultish situations…'”

This one has some delicious "keeping it real while undercover" smut in it.  I had a little trouble imagining Scully losing control to the extent she does, but I'm willing to forgive these writers this once; they're two of my all-time favourites. And like I say, OOC is perfectly acceptable when there's intense sex involved...  which is why I hate it when CC takes them out of character.

Please be aware that there are many disturbing elements in this fic, and Scully bears the brunt of a lot of the coercive behaviour, so proceed with caution.
