Regaining Perspective & Judgement Trilogy by abracadabra

80,000 Words

Regaining Perspective & Judgement Trilogy cover

I.  Regaining Perspective and Judgment:  Mulder needs to use up vacation time or lose it. Scully joins him.

II. Undercover Phase: The vacation is cut short when the agents are called to New Hampshire for a case, working closely with an agent they don't share a lot of fondness for.

III. He Said/She Said: Mulder and Scully attend a National Law Enforcement Conference in Hilton Head...and need some therapy

This early abracadabra story was only available on her homepage. Mulder and Scully begin to get closer when they're sent undercover on a case with an agent they've had issues with in the past.

I was editing this one before I read it (it was a mess of text without paragraph spaces or indents, with the added difficulty of random line-breaks in the middle of paragraphs, which would never have passed through the auto-conversion I usually do) and noticed it was written in present tense. It looked awkward when I was editing it, but I didn't notice it as Microsoft David read it to me.  BTW, as I cheated so as not to have to manually edit the entire thing, there may be random breaks in sentences based on quotation marks... sorry. I've added a link to the geocities.ws page so you can enjoy it in its original format if you prefer. 🙂

Amish Country by Lolabeegood

80,000 Words

Amish Country cover

A serial rapist on the loose in Amish Country causes Mulder and Scully to go undercover and test the limits of their relationship.

Lola rates it an 'R'; it felt more explicit to me, so I've marked it as both.

As I move away from the brief UK theme, of course the fic I'm posting happened to have come about from conversations had during a trip to Scotland. I don't actually know where Lola's from, apart from her English spelling.

I've gone off on a tangent there; this story obviously has nothing to do with England or Scotland. Our intrepid agents are sent undercover, as a married couple, into an Amish community in Ohio. As usual, intense things happen, they respond, and they even solve the case. 🙂  Another fabulous story from Lolabeegood.

Truly Madly Deeply (Classic Edition) by Jenna Tooms

TMD (classic version) cover.

Mulder and Scully face the biggest adventure of all: parenthood.

**NOTE** This is the original story, before a complete rewrite. I would not recommend reading this unless you've already read Truly Madly Deeply I-V.

Happy Mother's Day again. This is the bonus fic for the bonus fic posted last night. This is the original draft of Truly Madly Deeply, which Jenna left on her website as "Truly Madly Deeply - Classic Version" after completing her full revision.

Normally I wouldn't post the original version of a rewritten story but this is an exception for a number of reasons: Jenna retained both versions on her site, they're vastly different stories apart from the underlying premise, and this one is a good story in its own right.

You can safely read both versions without knowing what will happen, however as "TMD Redux" is far richer in detail, action and plot I'd strongly recommend reading the revised version before this one to keep up the level of suspense. This one is a little sappier and possibly smuttier but doesn't have the same level of action and suspense.

Truly Madly Deeply by Jenna Tooms (MissLucyJane)

Truly Madly Deeply (Redux) cover

Mulder and Scully face the biggest adventure of all: Parenthood.

Where has Scully been, and why did she go there?

This story comprises four parts:
I: Runaway
II: Lights in the Sky
III: If Fates Allow
IV: Heaven and Earth

The links above will take you to the individual stories on AO3, or your can take the AO3 link to the left to the series page on AO3 where they're all linked. Remember to give Jenna some love when you're done. 🙂

Additional content warning in part IV for childbirth issues.

A special Mother's Day release that fits the UK theme. This is quite the adventure, with our agents trying to stay ahead of the bad guys.

Happy Mother's Day. I decided to throw in another bonus fic for the occasion. I'm actually releasing this story on Saturday night in my part of the world because this fic has its own bonus fic that I'll release tomorrow some time. Sometimes I get exhausted trying to keep track of everything...

Because this one's on AO3 I'm just doing the one-volume PDF & ePub as I find it far more convenient to read them together in one hit.

In my effort to find extra bits and pieces, I tracked Jenna down to her current website MissLucyJane.com. Jenna has posted some fanfic here, as well as links to her published work & a countdown to a new site launch on 31 May, 2023. It appears that she now exclusively focuses on gay romance fiction, so if that's your thing head on over.

TMD Carterhaugh - only click on this image if you have a burning curiosity.Unfortunately the second bonus I was considering didn't work out as I'd hoped. 🙁
I have the prologue and first five chapters of Part I of the barely-begun sequel, TMD: Carterhaugh. It did have me sucked in and I wanted to find out more about that door, but alas, the story hadn't progressed far enough to feel like it could even be used as an epilogue. It matters not, as TMD I-V provide adequate satisfaction, and were already an immense accomplishment for the author.

I'm not 100% certain on the main cover artist. It's not credited like the one by Sammy, so although the colour scheme is similar, I think it's Jenna's.  (I did add Jenna's name to the bottom on the 'official' cover because it wasn't there and gave me a good excuse to make the aspect ratio 3:4, as is my compulsion).

Field Where… (The) Series by Ginef

38,000 Words

The Field Where... series cover

The Field Where I Lied: Scully reflects on her relationship with Mulder and how the events of the episode TFWID will change things. This is not a pretty story, nor does it have a happy ending (but it does leave the potential for one).

The Field Where She Lied: Mulder takes a good, hard look at his life and what the events of the episode TFWID have done to it. (!CW - suicidal ideation)

The Field Where Max Fenig Arrived: Mulder and Scully are asked to assist Scotland Yard on a case involving a series of murders and possible alien abductions in Southern England while struggling to cope with their changing relationship.

Post-eps for "The Field Where I Died".

Ginef claims to have considered TFWID one of the best episodes in a long time, but then was compelled to 'fix' it with fanfic. 😛 Sorry, Ginef, that's my own attitude towards the episode coming through. Not that it was that bad, it just wasn't that good either IMHO.

Anyway, as with many, many, many X-Files episodes, it had plenty of plot holes and glitches to inspire fanfic, and Ginef originally took this on the angst route, before shoving them together on a case to sort things out.

They're in the UK again as they attempt to track down mysterious abductors and killers. In fact, after reading around 20 UK fics to decide which ones I'd post, the UK theme is going to carry over to next week so I hope you're enjoying the change in location.  😀

Werewolf Chronicles + Standin’ at the Crossroads by Frogdoggie

108,000 Words

Werewolf Chronicles cover

WCI: Wisconsin Death Trip: Mulder and Scully travel to Wisconsin to investigate some cattle mutilations. Their discovery of the cause behind the mutilations soon proves to be something very terrifying. This is a horror story.   !CW: rape (Mulder)

Standin' at the Crossroads: Mulder, Scully and Skinner travel to Maine on a case that proves to be a very dangerous and then deadly, X-File.

WCII: Not With a Whisper: Mulder and Scully revisit some familiar Wisconsin friends and then confront some familiar foes as well in this wide ranging X-File adventure. The story takes the Mulder-Scully relationship to one possible conclusion too.

Sometimes authors cause me to make decisions. I'm crap at making decisions, but after much thought, I bring you a frankenfic of The Werewolf Chronicles with "Standin' at the Crossroads" in the middle. It's not that they don't go in series, it's that there's a thematic difference. They're all horror stories with dark forces though.  If your head has been taken to a different place during the second story, you're welcome to go back and read just the two Werewolf Chronicles stories.

"Wisconsin Death Trip" has some disturbing scenes, so be prepared. "Standin' at the Crossroads" sees Skinner getting a workout  with a former flame, not entirely within his control, leaving Mulder and Scully to save them all, as only they can. Frogdoggie often has a soft spot for Frohike in his stories, and "Not With a Whisper" sees Frohike getting some action as the Werewolf Chronicles are brought to an end. All three stories contain dubcon elements, so proceed with caution.

This was the cover I originally made for Standin' at the Crossroads before I combined the stories. Some artistic license has been used, mainly because it was originally the cover I'd made for "El Quinto Sol" before I dug up the original dustjacket for that story. I've run out of fics to use it for right now. 🙂

Something very angry is haunting a tiny graveyard on the
Vineyard.

This story is on ff-net (2002) and Ao3 (2015), but only the "Teen & up) version.  This is the NC-17 version (of course).

I've added links to the other archives. I think the ff-net version is OK, but the AO3 version has a huge chunk of Chapter 3 repeated. I've made the x-libris web version NC-17, with an option to skip the smut and read the PG-13 version. Hopefully that's not too confusing.

This is quite a dark and haunting story, with Mulder returning to the Vineyard a few months after the death of his mother. Aside from the case they're investigating, there are a lot of old ghosts of Mulder's in the Vineyard.

Faith by Suzanne Bickerstaffe

Faith cover

While working on a case involving the firebombing of black churches, Mulder and Scully share their innermost thoughts when locked in a life-and-death situation.

!CW: some characters maintain racist views and use offensive language

This case file set early in the cancer arc reprises the role of Atlanta Detective, Mike Thomas, from "Flights".

It takes me right back to that late-season-4 Scully who is determined to handle everything on her own and rebuff any attempts Mulder makes to make life easier for her, leaving him feeling lost as to how to deal with her illness himself. Although there's no MSR here it still comes with feels and captures the genuine platonic love between them, particularly when they spend time trapped together, believing it may be their end.

Flights by Suzanne Bickerstaffe

The pair are on the trail of a serial killer with an odd penchant for souvenirs, while Mulder helps Scully to deal with a shattering experience.

Some classic 'Mulder and Scully tracking down a serial killer' action, where only their unique perspective will lead to the killer, putting them in danger.

This was written and set early in the series, with their relationship commensurate with that timeframe: friendship and respect. It only has the higher rating due to adult themes.

I'll make sure I post something for the smut-fiends on Wednesday, as otherwise it's going to be a noromo week. 🙂

Blizzard & Transfers cover

Blizzard: Mulder and Scully are caught in a blizzard in the middle of nowhere without any shelter.

Transfers: Mulder becomes "possessed" and hurts Scully.

!Content Warning applies for "Transfers" - more info below.

This was originally supposed to be a series but unfortunately only two stories were written.  It's a shame because she set up a really interesting scenario that I'd have liked to have seen play out more.

There are lots of the favourite tropes here, despite this being written way back in 1996.  If it helps with considering the content warning in "Transfers", the actions warned about are outside Mulder's control and more of an X-File.

I love stories that don't fit into standard tags, but it makes it hard to entice readers with promises of certain events. I've also left off tags so as not to give things away.

An important section of the  (then) upcoming movie, (FTF) from the author’s point of view.

This fic, bestowed with Fight the Future's working title, was written before FTF screened, with a few late additions once "The End" and the movie preview aired. Alas, Mr Carter decided to take them on a slightly different course.

Anther one that didn't fit with the tags. I decided near enough was good enough.

Worth It by Anne Haynes

Worth It cover

March 6, 1996 marks 4 years from the dateline on the X-Files pilot. While in real time, we've only seen 3 years, I'm a stickler for timelines, so I'm sticking with the four year number for this story.  I'm going with my own personal theory about the evolution of Mulder and Scully's relationship--which is that they're in love, they KNOW they're in love, but they can't do anything about it...yet.

Just a short one today to celebrate this special day in history - the day that Scully met Mulder.

This story is set in the turmoil of Season 3. Although I tend to go with the 1993 start date, March 6, 1993 is a Saturday. It's weird enough that Scully started her new assignment on a Friday and headed off to the plausible state of Oregon on a Saturday...

There's long been debate as to Pendrell's first name. It was believed to be either Alan, Sean or Daniel.  In true X-Files tradition, the actor didn't know his name but called himself "Pete". I've always thought it was Sean, as given in The Official  Companion, but I've since learned that "Sean" was based on a false premise, so who knows? I do like Sean, but Alan works for me too.

I do like this protective Mulder and Pendrell working together.

Katherine I & II by Michaela E

Katherine cover

Following Scully's birthday, Scully essentially goes through what Mulder did in Dreamland, but her *Morris Fletcher* is a mysterious antique shop owner named Katherine.

I had a bit of a Scully's Birthday binge recently trying to pick which stories I'd post, and ended up with too many. Surprisingly though, I didn't come across many short PWPs, they were mainly longer stories, and most without the smut we all seem to love.  Hopefully this lack of ScullyBirthdaySmut has been addressed over at AO3 in the last couple of decades 😉

This story is a longer story with an actual plot, but no smut, sorry. I got a kick out of the way Michaela wove some past episodes into this Season 6 story and thought it was worth a share.

Blood Oranges by Syntax6

Blood Oranges cover

The latest victim in a series of brutal murders has a surprising connection to Mulder, but it's Scully who has the connection to the killer. Their relationship might not survive either one.

Another fabulous story from Syn. She's tossed a whole bunch of quality ingredients int0 this one. Although it starts on Scully's birthday, there's no time for cake - they're-ahem- thrust right into the action from the first scene.  I also live for a little role reversal from time to time. 🙂

This one was a challenging one for Syn to write. I've linked her website for you to go and give her some love, and while you're there you can follow the link on her home page to get to her original novels if you haven't investigated them already. I don't have a lot of time to read anything other than X-Files fanfic, but when I'm looking for something totally different to read, I turn to novels by former fanfic authors... I'm so tragic. LOL.

What if Ethan was never edited from the Pilot episode? What actually happened between the scenes we saw? Tune in and find the true smutty story.

Today happens to be the 29th anniversary of my first X-Files episode - the pilot first aired in Australia on 10 Feb 1994.

In honour of this auspicious occasion I've selected a series that starts back at the pilot episode. Dyann recounts the first three seasons with a bit of a twist. Don't worry too much about Ethan... he can't last long after Scully begins working with Mulder 😉

The Scully/Ethan sex is more elaborate than I prefer, but it usually only lasts a paragraph or two. It's not that detailed, I just don't like any details when it comes to 'others'. It's easy enough to skim through if that's not your bag either and there's enough M/S smut to eventually cleanse your mind of it too. 😀

Finding Rokovoko by Prufrock’s Love

Finding Rokovoko cover

A case in the Florida Everglades takes Mulder and Scully on a terrifying journey nowhere. The air conditioning and the laws of physics won’t work. She wants dinner and not to die. He dreams of a boy on the beach and not being Captain Ahab. A love story of absolute evil and existential doubt and truth that isn’t found on the free map from the Visitor Center.

As usual, as this is a Prufrock's Love story, I am unable to host it here so the link goes to the story at one of Mimic's sites.

Pru reminded me of just how envious I am of her cleverness and storywriting with this one. There is a gorgeous Mulder-Scully relationship here that tugs at the heartstrings as Pru tenderly takes us through the cancer arc with the added awkwardness of a sudden relationship change.

This was the story that I was getting vague memories of when reading AlienQueequeg's Gates of Hell but couldn't remember past that vague feeling of a similar circumstance. It was only that I was feeling warm & fuzzy after rescuing a kookaburra today that I put 'kookaburra' in my fanfic search program and this popped up. That kookaburra, currently recuperating at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, managed to bring me from worry to warm fuzzies twice today.

Usually Wednesdays are for short fics, but I didn't have another one ready to go so I figured that because Monday's release was relatively short it would all even out somewhere along the line....

Out of the Cold Series by Vicki S

21,000 Words

Out of the Cold cover

Out of the Cold: Mulder leaves Scully ‘out in the cold’, literally, and has to warm her up. Let your imagination take it from there,

Little Red Corvette: Mulder and Scully take some time off in sunny California just to enjoy each other, but end up not being able to deny who, and what, they really are.

Making Up is Hard to Do: A fight, a case, a question that may never get asked if the agents can’t make up.

This is like three fics in one. OK, so it is literally three fics in one, so that might be why, but what I mean is that each of the stories has a different feel.  It starts out with some PWP-like action, then heads into fluffy territory for the second story, before becoming more of a case file in the third story.

Some fourth season MSR for your enjoyment.

CW: There is some really disturbing imagery to do with a child in this one.

I'm feeling so much better now that I've not just uploaded, I've gone with major torture. I wish I could get Scully to my psychologist, she's a miracle worker. 🙂

This one is a rough one, and for those who need a smut payoff after tolerating torture, you may wish to skip this story and come back Wednesday for the top shelf PWP I have scheduled.

Khyber Vs Season Seven cover

A series of post-eps and replacement episodes based on a slightly different interpretation of canon. The idea, I hope, is that you could actually watch the S7 episodes I list below in the order I have them, intersperse them with my 'new' episodes and post-eps, and you would have a somewhat different, but still coherent story arc.

There have been some minor changes in order--"Theef" and "First Person Shooter" have swapped, as have "Je Souhaite" and "Hollywood AD." "En Ami," "Chimera," "Fight Club," and "Requiem"* have all disappeared and been replaced with new original episodes.

*These replacement stories never eventuated.

Like any season, there's going to be a few reruns.

Khyber's version of Season Seven:

the sixth extinction
amor fati
hungry
millennium / collapsar
rush
the goldberg variation
orison
the amazing maleeni
signs and wonders
sein und zeit
closure
x-cops
theef / weret-hekau
first person shooter / how gravity works on planet spooky
home from the war (part one) (replaces En Ami)
(rebroadcast S03x02) paper clip / coyote luck
where i end and you begin (part two) (replaces Chimera)
all things
brand x / amnesia
je souhaite / vapor trail
(rebroadcast S03x23) wetwired / poems
hollywood ad / the waterskiers  (includes a reworking of En Ami)
(rebroadcast S06x02) drive / the fall of our summer

Khyber has made a few changes to Season Seven and once again I'm bitterly disappointed that CC & co didn't add a few fanfic authors to their writing team to show them how it's done.  He starts adding to S7 just after Millennium, then lets CC have his way for a while before kicking back in after Theef.  A few old episodes have reruns along the way.

Just a warning that you may feel a little lost at one point but it will all make sense eventually.

Although this series was never completed there are no cliffhangers. The main storylines are wrapped up.

I haven't worked out yet whose artwork is used for the cover, but there was a cover for Weret-hekau on IOHO:

Scully’s Dilemma Series by Romp

43,000 Words

Scully's Dilemma cover

SCULLY'S DILEMMA: An interagency office briefing on a series of cases involving anal probing stirs strange fantasies in Scully. In order to get to the “bottom” of Scully’s suspicions about having been anal probed, she and Mulder must get very up close and personal.

MULDER'S TAIL: A case involving a unique sexual practice causes Mulder to reflect on his first encounter with bondage and domination. Meanhwile, a mysterious older woman offers to be Scully’s sexual mentor.

KRYCEK'S GAME: Krycek has information Dana Scully desperately needs. What is she willing to wager to get it?

SCULLY'S INSTRUCTION: Scully gives in to her submissive side.

SCULLY'S RELEASE: Scully finally gives in to her fantasy of performing at the strange club known as “The Menagerie.” Unexpected consequences ensue, forcing her to consider confronting Mulder about the true nature of her feelings.

This series is very different to the usual stuff I post here. Yes it is MSR, but it takes a few detours and includes a few other characters. It does end up in the right place though.

Romp should possibly have considered the name Rump due to their obvious fetish here, but I'm not going to kink-shame, just give you a bit of a heads up as to what you're getting into. There is a lot of humour in it.

In "Krycek's Game": "Scully felt something sickening in the pit of her stomach. Dear God, were there really men out there who had nothing better to do with their time than manufacture fake nude photos of her?"

OK, I'm not a man so Scully can't be talking about me, but it's true. ? Tragically I have nothing better to do with my time, so there are also a few extra images included in the PDF & ePub versions that I've put over on the hidden "Under the covers" page at x-trash. (The password is "smut").  You can use them to make your own calendar if you're so inclined. 😀

I've also had difficulty tagging this. I apologise if I've missed anything important. There is some past Mulder/Phoebe, and some slashesque Scully/Other.

How I Slept With My Partner cover

"How I Slept With My Partner (Without Really Trying)" is just the "secret-header-name" for some notes Jose Chung is gathering for his next fiction novel. He's asked me, Jaime Lyn, to conduct a few interviews for him, as he is sick at home with the flu. All personal accounts contained, herein, are the property of Dana Katherine Scully and Fox William Mulder. The names will be changed, of course, but the accounts will most likely remain intact. This story includes the previously authored "How to Blend in With Normal People".

I quite enjoy a deliberate Mary-Sue. This is a long fic, with a complicated Mulder and Scully and all their baggage interwoven with humour. It does get quite angsty in places.

I know it's hard to believe, but this is actually a season 8/9 fic (sans Doggett & Reyes) in which William exists.  It must be a Christmas miracle.

!CW: dubcon, character death

I really don't have enough of Xenith's stories here. She wrote many a fabulous torture-smut story. I've been meaning to post Abattoir here for a long time but I haven't managed to wrangle all the multiple follow-up fics to that one yet. I was doing that right before the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2021, so I need to go back and find out where I was at with it.

In the meantime this is another angsty fic. This one is nowhere near as torturous as Abattoir (not many fics are to be fair). The dubcon in this one is definitely a LOT milder.  Skinner accompanies them on the case as he's concerned after his dream, so he's there to witness some post-coital panic. I love me some Skinner!discovery.

Goin' Down South: Mulder and Scully go to a town called Final, Mississippi to investigate a crime that apparently did *not* happen.

Headin' Back South: Mulder and Scully return to Final.

Gone to Florida: The final story in the "Final" series

CW: Racist themes, dubcon-ish - brief sexual contact for self-preservation.

David's writing, despite heavy influence, is unique in the X-Files fanfic community.  According to David, this series was inspired by characters in the comics of Garth Ennis and the proliferation of unique secondary characters in the works of Charles Dickens. There's a lot of humour in the over-the-top characters from the deep south.  No real romance in this one, but a lot of laughs.

The story of a man, a woman and their lucky pickle.

This story starts after Kaddish & follows the episodes to Redux II.

Can you believe that today is National Pickle Day? It seems to come around so quickly... 😉

Seriously, I went to some website to make sure I knew what holidays were in November and found that November 14 is National Pickle Day. I don't know how widespread this occasion is, I was too astonished that it was even a thing. I'd been wanting to post another syntax6 story among others, but I can get overwhelmed deciding which of the many stories I have ready to post in what order, so I was hoping that seeing what holidays there were would help narrow my options. It was synchronicity that the first free posting day was dedicated to pickles and I had the perfect story to release.

Don't worry too much about the Mulder/other thing. It was never meant to be. Syntax6 manages to weave in plenty of drama and angst around the cancer arc and weaves the episodes into her story seamlessly.

Because images get posted in various places I have no idea who made them. MaybeAmanda did a lot of syntax6's images but these weren't credited on her website. The black and white cover below was found at the land of the yeti, but I have no idea if that's where it originated.

This can be quite the dark story at times. It's an often uncomfortable Mulder and Scully, floundering a little to find their place in each other's worlds with all the changes thrust upon them by the consortium, but they do find their stride often enough to satisfy.  They do get put through a few trials though, and there are a few twists and turns at the end to keep you on the edge. Mulder and Scully head to a small town for a case where people have killed themselves in rather strange ways. Scully's not in the best of moods, given the whole Fowley situation, but they manage to sort things out...

Everything That Really Matters by Dyann Z

Everything that Really Matters cover

The passage of time has a way of making everything all right.

Don't be too worried about the Character Death or Scully/Other tags 🙂

Seeing as I'm stuck in Tropical North Queensland for a while, I felt it only fitting that I bring you all along with me. This fic is set about 20km (13mi) south of where I am now. It's actually a tiny little village with about 4 streets, and no actual 'downtown' but obviously fictional liberties have been taken.  I have included a few photos to give you a feel for it. I actually took some more of the beach itself on my last visit here but they were among the ones I accidentally deleted it seems.

Last time I stopped for Fish & Chips there there was a "Recent Crocodile Sighting" warning sign on entry to the beach.  While Scully and William had a nice time on the beach, it's not quite that relaxing when you have to watch out for saltwater crocodiles and cassowaries, and it's also not wise to swim in the water without wearing a stinger-suit because of marine stingers. Typical Australia where everything is out to kill you.  It really is a beautiful part of the world though with tropical rainforest coming right down to glorious white beaches, so I'll allow Dyann her artistic license.
I can see why Mulder would want to live there, although I think he might prefer the remoteness of north of the Daintree River, where I am now, where it's off the grid, and where clothing is just a nuisance half the year when it's pouring with rain and/or the humidity is so high that nothing dries, and there are vast tracts of rainforest between h0uses. 😉 You just have to put up with bad satellite internet 😀
As far as the story goes, it's set after Mulder leaves at the beginning of Season 9 - it goes off into its own dimension shortly afterwards, so the further events of Season 9 and everything that follows have all just ceased to exist. I love fanfic.  Don't worry about the Character Death warning, this is the X-Files  🙂

Dogged Determination 1 Cover

Dogged Determination I - Watched : The Dog Scully takes in is more then he appears to be. Those looking for the animal are willing to kill to get him.

Dogged Determination Interlude I - Linen and Steel : A little erotic interlude.

Dogged Determination Interlude II - The Grapes of Wrath : More total mind candy - breakfast and food fights.

Dogged Determination Interlude III - Icy Hot : At long last we learn what Scully bought with those handcuffs...

Dogged Determination II - Hadinio`gwe'oek : They are gathering.  A dark, Iroquois-inspired tale.   CW: Disturbing imagery

Dogged Determination III - Pandora's Box : Alien DNA, a genius teenager and secrets from the past all end up interrupting Mulder and Scully's life just as Scully discovers some surprising news. Conspiracies, mysteries, some MSR and a dash of the paranormal for extra flavor. CW: Disturbing imagery, Sexual Assault

Dogged Determination Interlude IV - Endless Knot : A brief journal entry.

Dogged Determination IV - Suffer the Children : Horrific murders in Cleveland stall a vacation weekend and Hope's plans to move. CW: Child abuse, child rape, extreme violence.

Dogged Determination V - Watched Over : As Mulder and Scully get settled into a new home and prepare to receive the new arrival they get a call for help from a family vacationing in Colorado. There they must join with Buster and his kin to try and rescue two children in need of help. Introduces the heroes of Dean Koontz's original "The Watchers"

Dogged Determination Interlude V -The Greatest Gifts : Mulder ponders the meaning of Christmas. A short, sappy finale.

Oh, it's lovely being off-grid in the rainforest, but this satellite internet is going to drive me crazy when I have to refresh 3 times to load or save anything. I'll have to see how it goes as far as uploading while I'm here.

I listened to this one during most of the drive up. I had no idea how long it was, but it kept me occupied as I drove and made me drive extra carefully during certain scenes as I didn't want to have to submit dashcam footage with M&S in explicit flagrante delicto if I happened to crash while that was going on.

Anyway, this one is case related, it's actually a crossover at times but you don't need to know the other source/s, and packed full of MSR. Be aware that some parts come with content warnings, which I've tried to add to the descriptions above.

I won't be able to add the web version for this one, due to its size and the internet issues that I'm not up for facing right now. 🙂 I can't add the extra artwork either...

Genesis cover

They thought that as long as they had each other they would survive. But what happens when reality begins to blur and their worlds turn upside down?

CW: brief mention of possible suicide (nothing particularly intense)

Ally uses the Emily arc very effectively, by having the case file of another 'Emily' land on Mulder's desk. Although it's not an X-File, it's a chance for he and Scully to head back to San Diego, and discover more about these children who weren't meant to be.

It's a layered story that keeps up the pace throughout as all kinds of drama ensues. I know Ally did some fan art but I don't remember seeing any specifically for her novels. I'm not prepared to trawl through years of tumblr posts to find out for sure either...

Nuptiae Sub Rosa cover

A series of canon-compliant missing scenes showing that the dynamic of Mulder and Scully’s relationship may have changed much earlier than previously thought.

Xfmaweezy has been a wonderful friend to me while I've been feeling less than awesome, and she sent me this fic to read when I was struggling with reading anything. I'm so glad she did. It certainly cleared me of the lingering angst I was feeling with the heaviness of the Goshen Universe fics. It's humourous, it's serious, and it's hot as hell as it follows the ups and downs of the Mulder-Scully dynamic from Seasons 4 to 7. I love it so much. Thank you K.

City of Light by Bonetree

163,000 Words

On the run through the American Southwest, Scully and Mulder flee the shadowy forces of Owen Curran and Padden's government agents, who threaten their freedom and their lives. On the way, they must also struggle with their own demons, which threaten to tear them apart.

The Goshen saga continues, with a damaged Scully and protective, concerned Mulder on the run from both the  bad guys and the good guys, dealing with the fallout from Secret World.

This one is quite a tough read, particularly straight after Secret World.  Although this is third in the trilogy - spoiler alert - it's not a trilogy. 🙂

A lot of art work was made for this story, but only a small amount of it has survived. Sue made chapter images, one of which is used as the cover art here.

Secret World by Bonetree

147,000 Words

Scully goes deep undercover to find the secret behind a mysterious death. But with what she learns, will she ever be able to come in from the cold?

!Please check the content warnings

A Scully-centric fic that plays to Scully's strengths without turning her into a saint. Meanwhile, poor Mulder is struggling with the separation, and Skinner is having headaches trying to keep him out of trouble.

Bonetree writes a compelling story with some fascinating characters. As Scully gets deeper into the case, we feel Mulder's angst and desperation over his lack of control.  There's also some wonderful Mulder-doctoring and caring for an injured Scully, and of course, some considered smut.

Goshen by Bonetree

27,000 Words

A harrowing night in the Virginia mountains makes Mulder and Scully relive parts of their pasts and rethink their future.

Note: The story itself is PG13 (language, violence); the Epilogue is NC17 (younger folks can skip the epilogue and still get the story.)

But wait, there's more! After you've read the story, come back and read some bonus smut, a wonderful parody written by Bonetree as a follow up to Goshen: Goshen Interlude: Nothing Gold Can Stay.

After that you can continue with the other stories in the Goshen universe. They're linked at AO3 but I'll be adding them here as well.

Hi guys. Sorry I've been MIA for so long. I realise it's been a month (there was an extra one I pre-loaded that appeared later) but I've been fighting the nasty brain demons after being made to take a long washout period from old meds before starting new ones. I'm feeling so much better now and want to get back into posting, but I'm not quite there yet.  What I've decided to do to reduce the brain strain is post only links to stories that are on AO3 or ff.net for a little while.  Most of these will be ones I already have covers for.

First up is one I've wanted to post for a long time but couldn't decide whether to post the full series t0gether here as well as link to AO3. My lack of brain helped make that decision for me. I didn't have a cover for Goshen, which surprised me, because I have covers for the rest of the Goshen universe. There likely was one at some stage, and if I come across it I'll upload it.

Without further ado, this is a lovely, angsty stuckfic, with a revisit from Emily. It's a prelude to the 4 novel length stories that follow in the Goshen Universe. You can access them all from the AO3 link, but there's a short, Goshen

*I've just noticed that there are line returns on the version on AO3. I've added a webpage version here for those who use a screen reader and get driven nuts by line breaks.*

Familiar Heart, A by Mish

A Familiar Heart cover

The Best Years of our Lives meets Magnificent Obsession Mulder and Scully style.  An alternative universe story, set in the 1940s.

This includes the sequel, An Unchanged Soul, which actually brings the word count up to 203,000 words.  This second story is unfinished, so it's up to you whether you embark on the extra 130,000 words knowing that there will be no ultimate resolution.

I don't usually read alternate universe stories, but I started this one without realising and had to keep reading.

This one had enough tension to keep me hooked the whole way. I've included the incomplete sequel. Mish tended to write a lot of stories at the same time, and consequently there are quite a few of hers that were never completed.  I was tossing up whether to include this story here due to the disappointment when I found the sequel wasn't complete, but the original story is worthwhile. You can decide for yourself whether to keep reading.

Soap And Eggs: A possible future. A might-have-been. A what-if. Or a "There but for the grace of God...."

Soap and Eggs II: An Ivory-White Christmas: A solitary Christmas in San Francisco, California.

Soap and Eggs III: A Grade-AA Valentine's Day: The stage is set for the final conclusion.

Soap and Eggs IV: Suds And Shells: Sometimes, it's hard to decide when to settle for life's leftovers.

*BONUS* Soap and Eggs Happy Ending : This doesn't officially exist. According to EPur "this isn't a part of the Soap and Eggs series. It's just me fooling around, describing on paper what kind of ending the sap in me always wanted." It was exclusive to EPur's website. If you want to remain true to the spirit of the series you can skip it, but if you're human you'll definitely want to read this.

!CW: character death (Not M or S).

If you're after a happy holiday story, look elsewhere!!!

EPurSeMouve stabs you in the heart with this one. Then twists the knife. Then rips it right out of your body and stomps on it. There is a band-aid for you at the end though.

This season 4 end-of-the-X-Files imagining isn't really a whole lot worse than what Chris Carter did to them after "The Truth". It always bothered me when I thought of how difficult their lives would be on the run. The only difference then was that at least they had each other. I'm going to stop now before I cry again. Just make sure you're in a safe place before reading this.

This was one I'd originally intended to release at Halloween, but I was out gallivanting around the country instead. Never mind, it's a late Halloween, almost-Christmas and early Valentine's story.

This was the Julie Fortune story I thought I'd uploaded already.  I discovered that there were a few fics prepared around the time of the Great Computer Disaster of 2021 that never made it online.

It's been a rough week IRL and I didn't realise I was behind in my uploads, so I apologise that there was nothing new on Friday.  I do have a few really great fics picked out to share over the festive season, so please stay tuned...

Inferno Series by Pellinor

196,000 Words

Inferno cover

Inferno: Mulder gets drawn into a web of guilt and revenge that could rob him of his sanity, even his life. Both Scully and Mulder think they know what they are dealing with, but the truth is something neither of them have ever expected.

Purgatorio: Three months on, and Mulder shows no signs of even attempting to come to terms with what happened to him in "Inferno," and Scully begins to feel the strain of having to constantly sacrifice her own needs to the needs of her desperately unhappy partner. Things come to a head on a murder case when Scully simply can not accept Mulder's theory. Will their partnership survive?

Paradiso: While Scully attempts to undo the damage wrought by recent events, Mulder gets drawn into a web of intrigue that could lead him to the truth, but could just as easily destroy him.

Journey back to a difficult time in Season 3, after Paper Clip, where our agents seemed to have trouble finding a middle ground.  They're miles apart when they're sent away for a case, and things don't improve in a hurry.

No MSR, but lots of angst and MulderTorture.  Strap yourself in, because it's a bit of a rough ride for Mulder and Scully in this one. One for the angst addicts.

Fugue by RivkaT

26,000 Words

Fugue cover

This one's a bit unusual as RivkaT wants you to read the opening scene before you get to read the summary. The only hint before reading is "It's not what you think. At least, I hope not."

Trust me, it's worth reading the first scene to get to the summary.

RivkaT starts this one with our agents hot and heavy.  It does get progressively more angsty as they find themselves in a dangerous predicament.  An excellent fic.  There are some mild dubcon elements if you overthink it, so try not to overthink it.

You do not need to have read the series to read this one.

Outstanding in her Field: A PWP sequel to Going Up/Going Down. Mulder teaches Scully a new game. Not necessary to have read GU/GD, but it helps...

There's still trouble in paradise as Mulder and Scully are sent to Vermont for different reasons.  Mulder is the worst deep undercover agent that the bureau has ever seen as his focus keeps shifting from the job he's there to do. 😀

NEON UNIVERSE VOLUME II

Devil's Advocate: After Scully's recovery post-One Breath, Mulder & Scully pose as newlyweds on a Mystery-Solving cruise to catch a serial killer.

Devil's Advocate II: Sanctuary: Escaped prisoners come across Maggie Scully's house where Mulder is recuperating with the Scully family after their cruise adventure.

You Better Sit Down Now: Valentine's day after the drama at Maggie's. (ImAStinker only)

Not to be confused with another story of the same name, these stories feature a Season 2 Mulder and Scully, posing as a married couple on a cruise ship. I had a bit of a cruise ship binge lately, and there's still more to come...

The second fic features the whole Scully family in peril, as Scully takes Mulder there to recover after the first story.

UPDATE: I've now reuploaded this book with a third story that takes place straight after the other two.  I didn't realise that ImAStinker's fics were all part of the one universe, so there's also more before and after this volume.  I'll be re-releasing this one with the other two volumes of the Neon Universe stories.

Topaz by Bardsmaid

110,000 Words

Topaz: Hours after the end of Sanctuary, Alex Krycek has fled west from Owensburg, weak and re-injured. Mulder and Scully are left
wondering which group is behind the disturbing symptoms that developed in Tracy, but critical evidence has been stolen. Will they
return to their old positions at the FBI, or will circumstances turn them in a different direction? That strange man Mulder noticed in the hospital hallway--surveillance video will reveal a second man no one can identify, both of them dressed identically, right down to the tie. And what will become of Krycek's promise to help Mulder find out once and for all what happened to his sister?

Volume 3 of the Sanctuary series contains Part 4, 'Topaz'.  You'll need to read the other parts first.

Bardsmaid passed away before this story could be completed. I've republished Topaz along with the first 3 parts of the series despite the lack of resolution as I really enjoyed reading where the story was heading. If you like your stories to have an ending, don't proceed.

Alternatively, you could consider this an epilogue to Sanctuary.  If you don't want to read the whole thing only to be left hanging, I've marked a place in Chapter 3 on the PDF/EPUB versions that you can read to to give you the answer to some questions without opening too many new cans of worms. I actually got to the end of what's available and thought I'd missed copying some of it because I was so engrossed that  I thought I'd only read 40,000 or so words rather than the 100,000 words  I'd consumed.

Additionally, the prologue of Topaz is a vignette called "Half-Life" that was written separately to Topaz and can be read on its own.

Vale Bardsmaid.

Sanctuary:  On the run from the Smoking Man, Mulder and Scully go undercover in Kentucky, hoping the Beeson-Lymon case will lead them to information that will finally bring CSM down.  Meanwhile, Alex Krycek slowly recovers from a gunshot wound with the help of an unlikely caregiver from whom he can hide nothing.  CSM hatches a nefarious plot to draw Mulder and Scully out into the open.  Help, and resolution, come from unlikely quarters.

This second volume contains part 3 of the Sanctuary series. You absolutely have to read them all in order so grab the first two parts here.

Bardsmaid managed to somewhat redeem Krycek in this one, bestowing some humanity on him without it feeling at all forced.  By the time I got to this one I was all in and didn't even notice how long it was.

This includes the Sanctuary postscripts. As the sequel to Sanctuary was never completed, you may choose to end your journey here, but I strongly recommend that you keep going with Topaz.

BTW, I may have gotten confused with which tags belong on which volumes. I just recently re-read them all in one huge binge and can't remember what happened when...

Paradise Lost + Walking Through Fire by Bardsmaid

89,000 Words

PL WTF cover
Part of the Sanctuary series:

Paradise Lost: Mulder is dismissed from the Bureau on trumped-up charges of having had contact with the X-files. Stripped of his driving motivation as well as his job, he's forced to look critically at his life. Scully, reassigned to a teaching position at Quantico, must balance her new responsibilities with her concern about her former partner's well-being. And Alex Krycek insinuates himself into Mulder's life for reasons that are not immediately apparent.

Walking Through Fire: Determined to gain reinstatement at the Bureau, Mulder searches for a way to bring Cancer Man down while also confronting the grim reality of unemployment, and Scully's responsibilities increase as she juggles her new assignment with her continued support of her ex-partner's quest. But Skinner requests her forensic expertise in an ongoing investigation, saddling her with an additional burden that may prove more than she can bear. A ghost from Teena Mulder's past prompts her to finally open up to her son, though the information she offers has the potential to crush him. And Alex Krycek inadvertently provides the evidence Mulder needs to foil the Smoking Man.

The Sanctuary Trilogy+ is a masterpiece of fanfic by Bardsmaid. She appeared to have a real sense of comfort with the characters and not only  did she make existing characters her own, she created rich, real characters that could have changed the trajectory of the show post Season 7 if only CC & co had thought of them.  I can't help but wonder what S8 would have been like had they introduced a character like Agent Wilkins who was eager to help rather than antagonise.

This series diverges from canon at the beginning of Season 6, so all the usual favourites are involved in a complex mytharc plot.  Take some time off and really immerse yourself in this one.

There are 4 parts to this series, which I've spit into three volumes. Whilst the Sanctuary Trilogy itself was completed, Topaz, the sequel Bardsmaid was writing at the time of her passing was not, but is included here as an optional extra.

Bardsmaid's website is still available at bardsmaid.org, and her original images can be found there and in the attached epub/pdf versions. New covers are included here due to the tiny size of the original pics.

PS  Leland is a much better name for CSM. He's so not a 'Carl'.

Nevdull doesn't give too much away with her summary, so I went into this one not knowing what to expect, which was good, because had I noticed it was to do with Season 7 Mytharc I may not have read it at all... I'm often very prejudicial in that way.

This is a truly unique and fascinating treatment of the mytharc we were lumped with in S7.  Krycek and Marita get a look in (plus some backstory), joining Mulder and Scully in a determination to get to the bottom of the information found on the alien ship and save humanity. Instead of Mulder claiming to have found the key to everything and Scully rolling her eyes, this Mulder and Scully just do what needs to be done.

I have to give Spooky's Girl bonus points for the double ditch, double jealousy, Phoebe link, and for correctly referring to the elephant 'necropsy'.

Hot Damn is right. I don't remember coming across this fic before; I only went searching for it after I found a dustjacket for it and was intrigued. I'm glad I found it. I had no idea where it was coming from or heading to, and it totally really blew me sideways. Plus the flashback was one of the hottest "all things" fics I've ever read.

I'm disappointed that I found no more of this would-be series, but even the note at the end that there was more planned was enough to allow me to smile, knowing it wasn't supposed to be the end of the story.

The dustjacket is from Livia's website so I'm assuming it's her art. Sorry if I butchered it a little in my compulsion to force all the cover art into a 3:4 ratio...

!CW: consent is freely given, but under circumstances that could be considered duress.

As stated in the author's notes, her wish was to explore the M/S relationship in a way that it "gives them a kind of mystical strength, one that frightens the powers that be, one that could actually help them in their quest for the truth"

Whilst their first time is under less than perfect circumstances, it connects them in a special way that continues through the challenges they face in the rest of the stories. I do have a special love for an early connection between our agents, and this one feels right for them.

I'm a sucker for the decoy!Scully trope, and this fic is an all-time favourite. Mulder's tongue can't help itself when faced with Scully's under-dressed cleavage, and to be totally honest, even as a straight woman  I can appreciate the temptation that naked Scullyboobs would present.  Slight dubcon (but not unwanted) Mulder!tongue action.

Mulder and Scully are on loan to the VCU, on the trail of a couple killer.

!Content Warning: M/S forced

This fic puts our agents into a situation where they are forced to make what they can of an otherwise unbearable situation, and in doing so strengthen their trust.  Livia treats them with love and compassion and has them come out on top as only Mulder and Scully can.

I often anguish over whether to publish an author's name where google can find it. It usually comes down to  how common the name is. I was on the fence with this one as so much fic comes up on google anyway, but I couldn't be sure that it wasn't a unique name, so I chose to be cautious. Whilst I've edited the name displayed on this site, it's still on the image where google can't see it, and in the downloadable documents.

However, I did find this entry in the urban dictionary that I found amusing and thought I'd share.

More Bill Jr angst for Scully, post Gethsemane. Poor Scully's been through the wringer lately in the fics I've uploaded. I'll have to give her some mindless smut next to make up for it.

Once again, Scully's family have been used against her, and Gemma is particularly cruel with her storyline. 😉   Fortunately Mulder has returned to life to keep her safe, and satisfied...

Barely Balancing by Frohike

52,000 Words

Barely Balancing cover

No summary provided, so here's my TV Guide version:

The Lone Gunmen help sort out the whole Diana issue and help play cupid, but just as things are finally working out, Scully is plagued by ever-worsening nightmares.

Frohike wanted to give Byers a chance to cut loose, or as she put it "get that steel rod removed from his ass", and this was the result. Byers plays a big part in this X-File, in which Scully is tortured once again.

This is set after the events of One Son, and it's quite satisfying that Scully's concerns are validated. I also confess to a few little chuckles over place names in this story.

Anamorphosis by Eponine119

106,000 Words

Anamorphosis cover

Assigned to find a horrifying serial murderer, Agent Scully discovers things about herself and her past that she never suspected.

Anamorphosis - Greek, to form anew. "the unfoldment of destinies follows ...upon the fall of outer circumstances...[a] substantial event was actually but a veil, a tissue of circumstance, conjured forth or the realization of a plot already formed." [Joseph Campbell, Creative Mythology]

!Numerous content warnings apply: child sexual abuse, recovered memories, rape (not described), suicidal ideations, dissociative disorder.

I know some of you like Scully!Torture, alongside Mulder!Caring of course, and Eponine119 certainly delivers in this one. She throws everything imaginable and worse at Scully in this story. Eponine does take some liberties with the Scully family, but they're entirely believable and usually make more sense than canon. If you like some pain with your MSR, this story will give you plenty of that.

Once upon a time there was a cover created by Mystic, but I can't get my hands on it. 🙁

Pillar of Salt by Nascent

42,000 Words

Pillar of Salt cover

Mulder talks Scully into accompanying him on a long, strange trip. Paradox ensues.

Nascent lures you in with this fic. What starts as a weekend away quickly turns into much more and our agents end up in a deadly situation.

This is the version that was updated by Nascent in 2011.

Complications Trilogy by Sarah Kiley

308,000 Words

Complications Cover

Complications: After Mulder is in a car accident, Scully continues her investigation in an effort to save him.

Second Chances: Four months after being arrested, Mulder breaks out of prison and seeks Scully's help in clearing his name. To do so, they must make a cross-country trip on the run from the law while Scully has second thoughts about marrying another man. Could this be Mulder and Scully's second chance?

Last Dance: Mulder's messing with something he shouldn't be.

This is an epic early story, beginning in Season 2, so it involves some characters  who never made it far into Season 3.  It's quite a complicated story, to match its name, as it involves time travel and parallel universes, which always make my head spin. It can get quite concerning MSR-wise at points, but you have to trust that they'll find a way.  But I admit to being very glad that an epilogue was added...

All covers are by Sarah.

Another cover for Complications, this one's from the Annex.

Rumor & Bartering Contentment by Beduini

11,000 Words

Rumor + Bartering Contentment cover

Rumor: It started like many rumors do - in the ladies room on the sixth floor. This time it happened to be during the five-minute break between departmental speakers in the first quarterly review of the new Millennium.

Bartering Contentment: Turning fledgling physical intimacy into a relationship you can wear every day.

Two glorious stories from Beduini. Some Scully/Mulder violence is involved in our agents' first frenetic coming together.

We’re Married Now by Skinfull

60,000 Words

We're Married Now cover

Mulder and Scully go undercover as a married couple to infiltrate a cult in Arizona.

"Look, this was supposed to be a short fic for a 6k word count challenge, but here we are about 60k+ words later, and half way through it basically just turned to smutty smutty smuttness. The case is weak, please don't come here looking for resolution on a casefic. Its contrived, all the tropes, set up for sex. Sorry not Sorry. ¯_(ツ)_/¯"

Skinfull has been churning out novels recently; this is the only one I've had a chance to read so far, but she's an author who's been providing great content for 2 decades so head over to AO3 and read them all! 🙂

Shred of Doubt by Jo-Ann L & Vickie Moseley

68,000 Words

Shred of Doubt cover

Scully gets called out to San Diego to help on a case and Mulder, though still recovering, tags along. Detective John Kresge wasn’t expecting the extra baggage.

This is an all-time favourite fic that I was reminded of recently.  I just love the characterisation embraced by these two long-standing XF fanfic authors: Mulder is constantly tortured but still tries to play at Alpha Male -being very possessive of Scully whilst feeling threatened and vulnerable, Scully is caught between Mulder and the rest of the civilised world, Kresge is an overbearing sexist pig, Maggie is the all-knowing peacemaker, and Bill Jr is at his belligerent, blustering best.  This all adds to the humour and makes this case file an extremely entertaining read.

Whole Catastrophe (The) by Diehard & Dryad

50,000 Words

The Whole Catastrophe cover
Part of the Absolute Beginners series:

This story takes place late in the year 2000. In the early Spring of the same year, Mulder and Scully finally got off the dime (after a false start, angst, guilt and a nightmare or two) and did the dirty deed. After a weekend of ‘solidifying their relationship’, they are pulled off the X-Files, but managed to find at least one way to console each other. Fast forward about six months—and you’ll be right we begin, dear reader. !cd (but not who you think)

The honeymoon is beginning to wind down for our agents after "Absolute Beginners" as they're finally sent back out on assignment and have to test out their new relationship 'in the wild' while dealing with a less-than-impressed local sheriff.

The web link will take you to invidiosa.com where you can find Diehard's fics, alongside some other fabulous authors, with many more images created by Invidiosa.

Light from Shadows by Writergal2000

79,000 Words

Light From Shadows cover

Waking up in a deserted park in the middle of the night, Mulder's mind is a blank. As he and Scully struggle to put the pieces of his memory together, evidence builds into a criminal case against Agent Mulder. While the partners search for the truth, Mulder begins to doubt his own innocence.

(I know, reminiscent of Demons, but too great an episode not to parallel.  This is different in its own right -- trust me.)

!Content Warning: There are quite detailed descriptions of sexual assault by or of Mulder, (depending on the POV).

It's not hard to think of Demons when the story begins, but it soon takes you to a whole 'nother place.  Mulder has a hard time fighting accusations against him, not knowing how much of it's true. But, honestly, either Mulder needed a better lawyer or I watch too many true crime shows. 😉

Like a Turtle on its Back by Jo-Ann L

25,000 Words

Like a Turtle cover

After several blows to his male ego, Mulder begins to question the equilibrium of his relationship—both professional and personal—with Scully.

Poor Mulder feels emasculated and tries to be one of the boys. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

Path of Thorns (The) by Smurf

53,000 Words

Path of Thorns cover

Through a tragic experience, Scully learns that the path of thorns cannot be walked alone.

This is another fic that seems to have fallen into the black hole of the internet, and only it's dustjacket remained to let me know of its existence.

Smurf goes all out on the angst and the Scullytorture in this one. Scully battles with her human frailty, and Mulder's there to support her when she eventually allows it.

Camp Hero by McKab

118,000 Words

Camp Hero cover
Part of the Old Friends series:

A continuation of Requiem. Mulder is abducted and Scully receives some incredible news... naturally she reaches out to some friends for support.

Scully teams up with people she can trust, Susan and Michael who were introduced in "Old Friends". It's much nicer to think that Scully had people to support her during Mulder's absence.

Sunflowers in the Rain by Scullys_laughter

Sunflowers in the Rain cover

As Mulder and Scully’s longing for each other is getting more and more unbearable a case file and Scully’s dreams take them to an isolated hotel in the mountains. Amid a missing persons’ investigation, a family mystery resurfaces, leading to discoveries, adventures, and revelations.

This week's link to AO3 is another from last year's fabulous case file exchange.  There are still some I haven't read, but I'm getting there.

History Lessons by Joann Humby

14,500 Words

History Lessons cover

A serial killer hunt gets Mulder in trouble with his memories of a past case but then gets Scully into worse trouble over her memories.

Joann has some realistic Mulder self-torture here, beating himself up about a past profile and evading Scully's attempts to draw out the problem.  It twists into a fascinating case as Mulder doesn't want his profile to let anyone down again - especially Scully.

Vox Series by Catwoman

17,000 Words

Vox sereis cover

Vox: This story’s been running around in my head since I first saw ‘All Souls’, and when I watched it again tonight I knew I had to write this down. See, as with many of this seasons angst-infested episodes, ‘All Souls’ made me feel physically sick, just because of the general unfairness of it all. We know from the episode that the events in the episode also made Scully sick, emotionally if nothing else. I would guess that Scully was haunted by the events of the episode, and will continue to be haunted by them, for quite some time afterward. Well, I think it’s about time Mulder sees what losing Emily has done to Scully, and what he’s doing to aggravate the hurt.

Wait: Nobody ever forgets where a hatchet is buried. Sequel to ‘Vox’.

Ice: Basically Mulder and Scully are just going to spend this entire story just bitching and moaning at each other angrily. If you’re not into that sort of thing, back out now. I’m warning you–MAJOR ANGST!!!

Red: Final story in the Vox Series. Mulder and Scully get a clue.

Although not a direct post-ep for 'All-Souls', this fic details how the chronic ScullyTorture in Season 5 may have affected Scully and impacted the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

Blood of Angels by LoneGunGuy

68,000 Words

Blood of Angels cover

"History is not written in books, Agent Scully, but in an alphabet of human suffering. Every death leaves its mark upon the aether, burnt into the astral plane, scorched into the very fabric of the universe—a textbook accessible to any man who is willing to annihilate himself in its pursuit. History is a manuscript written on the clouds. Authored by the blood of angels.”

As Scully lies on the sidewalk, dead, Mulder holds the murder weapon in his hands and knows that he must have had a damned good reason for killing her....if only he could remember what it was....A bizarre, labyrinthine mystery with darkly comic overtones.

This is an early X-Files fanfic classic, written by the talented LoneGunGuy in 1996.  This one isn't for the faint of heart, it can get dark. With imaginations as twisted as those of some fanfic authors, I'm so glad they're putting them into good use rather than letting them roam the streets creating havoc. 😉

I can have mixed feelings regarding the mytharc on the show that makes me shy away from reading stories dealing with aliens and cloning and all that stuff, but there are many, like this one, that blow it out of the water.

Sadly, to my knowledge, a sequel to this story was never forthcoming.

Colors by Amperage, Livengoo, Monkeyboy & Rodent

27,000 Words

Colors cover

Scully has an itch to scratch, but has trouble getting the right spot.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away … Oh, wait a minute, that’s a different story … Ah yes, how to explain Colors … Let’s just say that we decided if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, but let’s do it tongue firmly in cheek. Yes, there’s lots of firm things in this, and soft luscious goodies, and all the deep cerulean pools one could ever hope to gaze into. That’s right, we wrote a romance … well, as close to a romance as you’ll probably ever get out of this bunch of non-romantics.

Actually, it’s more about sex and comedy than romance, but we honestly are trying to get Mulder and Scully together. They’re just … just … guess you’ll just have to read to find out.

There's no other story quite like this round robin written in 1995. I'm still laughing from just attempting to come up with a summary. There's not much more I can say that the authors haven't said above. If you like some fun, burlesque smut, read it NOW. Even if you've already read it.

Last Gift (The) by Promise64

55,000 Words

Last Gift cover

The damage even a deception made out of love can create, the importance and resurrection of hope, and the journey back from the edge of despair.Mulder disappears, presumed dead, until he returns years later to rescue Scully from imminent danger.

You can imagine how Scully would feel to have the person she's mourned for 3 years suddenly turn up and take her away.  Scully has understandably mixed feelings about the whole thing, and they have to process those feelings whilst stuck together, heavily reliant on one another. Lots of delicious angst...
