Memorial Day by Brandon D Ray & shannono

Memorial Day cover

The Date is here.

Wishing those Stateside a happy Memorial Day, if that's the appropriate greeting.

This story is actually set between Mother's Day and Memorial Day. The buzzing begins. No not the normal buzzing you'd read in Bandon's or Shannon's stories, but the buzzing of bees.  The authors practised so much restraint, managing to stay into smut with this beginning of colonisation tome. That's not to say there's no romance...

Sadly, it took me 4 days to finish uploading this, and during that time I've forgotten half the tags, and might have put some in from the book I read after this one. Trying to get my brain to co-operate right now is like trying to get a toddler with ODD crossed with a rebellious teen to do something they don't want to do, despite my wanting to do it. All I can do is wait it out and try some reverse psychology on myself (which often works LOL). In the meantime, releases may slow down a little. I do have some uploads that weren't released to try to keep things going through my brain-rebellion, so maybe in that time I'll regain have some function back. 🙂

So Shall You Reap cover

Mulder and Scully travel to the UK to help in the search for Senator Matheson's wife. Guess who's there to 'help'?

We're still in the UK, this time late in Season 3. Our agents had vacation plans - together - that were shelved when first Mulder, then both of them were sent to Britain.  Phoebe is being Phoebe, showing strong narcissistic traits and toying with Mulder (and Scully). He finally manages to resist, not before really pissing Scully off. Fortunately for him, Scully is forgiving, and there's also some added bonus Kickass!Scully near the end. 🙂

Specimen 51 by WestShore

Specimen 51 cover
A woman scientist, faced with a personal life crisis, discovers a mysterious young prisoner who needs her help to recover what was taken from him -- his memories. In return, the handsome stranger helps her to learn that memories and fears are not the sum total of who we each are.

WestShore's stories are typically Mulder!Torture-centric and this is no exception. This time Mulder has taken time off for a vacation when he ends up in trouble, so Scully is initially unaware and doesn't feature prominently in the story, which is told by a third-party. This may be why Mulder prefers not to take his vacation time...

Operation Clean House by Sarah Segretti & Won and Lost by Branwell

Operation Clean House cover

Operation Clean House: A lost scene from an unfilmed episode. Colonization looms. A stolen moment on the tarmac. In medias res.

Won & Lost: I read “Operation Clean House” and later realized the perfectly imagined farewell scene was haunting me. Artistically it is note perfect as it stands. In my weakness I yearned for emotional closure. Sarah kindly consented to my attempting a sequel. This is it.

A couple of touching vignettes by Sarah Segretti & Branwell. It's off to war with the colonists and the mood is intense.

There's a Dustjacket for Won & Lost as well, by Frohike:

Black Hole St Pat's cover

The Black Hole: There's a rumor about the town that Mulder and Scully must investigate...Based on a true story, but the names have been changed to protect the innocent ; )

St Pat's: Somewhat of a sequel to Black Hole. Mulder and Scully return to Rolla.

This one's a strict case file, written in Season 2. The mytharc aspect is only very mild.

Vengeance by Juliettt

67,000 Words

Vengeance cover

A sequel to Anasazi. What happened after the explosion sealed Mulder in that boxcar at the end of the episode?

This was written in the seemingly never-ending break after the season 2 cliffhanger. Juliettt felt the need to get Mulder out of that boxcar. She's coerced Jackie St George & Martin Nantus to stay with Scully to ensure she doesn't do anything stupid. These characters were created by Sheryl Nantus, and appear in many of her stories and those of other authors. They do reflect the innocence of the early series. After all that's happened since then it can be hard to picture those early days where Mulder and Scully may have been able to have loyal friends other than the paranoid Gunmen.

Another PG story... I'll have to bring all the smut on Friday.

Worth It by Anne Haynes

4,000 Words

Worth It cover

March 6, 1996 marks 4 years from the dateline on the X-Files pilot. While in real time, we've only seen 3 years, I'm a stickler for timelines, so I'm sticking with the four year number for this story.  I'm going with my own personal theory about the evolution of Mulder and Scully's relationship--which is that they're in love, they KNOW they're in love, but they can't do anything about it...yet.

Just a short one today to celebrate this special day in history - the day that Scully met Mulder.

This story is set in the turmoil of Season 3. Although I tend to go with the 1993 start date, March 6, 1993 is a Saturday. It's weird enough that Scully started her new assignment on a Friday and headed off to the plausible state of Oregon on a Saturday...

There's long been debate as to Pendrell's first name. It was believed to be either Alan, Sean or Daniel.  In true X-Files tradition, the actor didn't know his name but called himself "Pete". I've always thought it was Sean, as given in The Official  Companion, but I've since learned that "Sean" was based on a false premise, so who knows? I do like Sean, but Alan works for me too.

I do like this protective Mulder and Pendrell working together.

Darkest Before the Dawn cover

Scully dives head-long into danger and intrigue as, with Skinner's help, she goes underground to try and find the Men In Black who kidnapped Mulder, and bring him back.

Kickass!Scully gets some action (in more ways than one 😉 ). Scully has quite the quest to find Mulder, always seemingly one step behind the consortium. Scully channels her inner-Mulder in the way that she's driven to take big risks to get him back.

Jeannine's website is still online so I've linked to that for the webpage version - it also links to a txt version.

Khyber Versus Season Seven by Khyber

57,000 Words

Khyber Vs Season Seven cover

A series of post-eps and replacement episodes based on a slightly different interpretation of canon. The idea, I hope, is that you could actually watch the S7 episodes I list below in the order I have them, intersperse them with my 'new' episodes and post-eps, and you would have a somewhat different, but still coherent story arc.

There have been some minor changes in order--"Theef" and "First Person Shooter" have swapped, as have "Je Souhaite" and "Hollywood AD." "En Ami," "Chimera," "Fight Club," and "Requiem"* have all disappeared and been replaced with new original episodes.

*These replacement stories never eventuated.

Like any season, there's going to be a few reruns.

Khyber's version of Season Seven:

the sixth extinction
amor fati
hungry
millennium / collapsar
rush
the goldberg variation
orison
the amazing maleeni
signs and wonders
sein und zeit
closure
x-cops
theef / weret-hekau
first person shooter / how gravity works on planet spooky
home from the war (part one) (replaces En Ami)
(rebroadcast S03x02) paper clip / coyote luck
where i end and you begin (part two) (replaces Chimera)
all things
brand x / amnesia
je souhaite / vapor trail
(rebroadcast S03x23) wetwired / poems
hollywood ad / the waterskiers  (includes a reworking of En Ami)
(rebroadcast S06x02) drive / the fall of our summer

Khyber has made a few changes to Season Seven and once again I'm bitterly disappointed that CC & co didn't add a few fanfic authors to their writing team to show them how it's done.  He starts adding to S7 just after Millennium, then lets CC have his way for a while before kicking back in after Theef.  A few old episodes have reruns along the way.

Just a warning that you may feel a little lost at one point but it will all make sense eventually.

Although this series was never completed there are no cliffhangers. The main storylines are wrapped up.

I haven't worked out yet whose artwork is used for the cover, but there was a cover for Weret-hekau on IOHO:

No Man's Land cover

A young soldier makes a discovery about the nature of human contact when she spies on Mulder and Scully.

!CW: Underage third party POV

Cyra seems to share my kink appreciation for third party perspectives of MSR. 🙂

This is a surprise weekend release as it's such a short fic. It didn't make it to Goss for some reason and I think it deserves to be more accessible.

By popular demand, I have started a secret page at x-trash for some of the smutty images underneath a few of the covers. You can find a more graphic version of the image on this cover here. The password is "smut".

Dark Seed cover

The remaining members of the Consortium have a new, desperate plan. Mulder and Scully are at the center of these machinations, and they struggle to deal with the intimate relationship that results.

CONTENT WARNING: This story contains mature subject matter, including sexual situations, violence, and imagery that may be disturbing to sensitive readers.

Contains all three books.

This can be quite the dark story at times. It's an often uncomfortable Mulder and Scully, floundering a little to find their place in each other's worlds with all the changes thrust upon them by the consortium, but they do find their stride often enough to satisfy.  They do get put through a few trials though, and there are a few twists and turns at the end to keep you on the edge. It's definitely worth a read. I even managed to make it through the pregnancy/baby factor completely unscathed.

Perchance to Dream by Linda Howell & Linda Phillips

Perchance to Dream cover

Scully and Mulder investigate a string of suicides, and discover more than they bargained for.

This is another example of a well-written case file that could easily have been an episode. Minus the MSR/smut of course. 😉  They have to evade an intrusive news reporter while trying to preserve the secrecy of their new relationship, causing a little strain between them.

Married Series by Angela W

355,000 Words

Married Series cover

All 50 of Angela W's Married Series stories in one volume.

While on a case in Las Vegas, Mulder and Scully achieve some professional - and personal - goals. Basically, this is the way I would like to see the TV series end, then see future movies, etc. take off from this point.

There is no way I'm going to list all 50 summaries here. Angela creates her own little universe that continues to cross paths with season 6 & 7 canon, often as part of a bigger universe including some crossovers.

I'm stuck in the wet tropics for extra time, with the rain pouring down, and since I no longer have my daily bat-feeding chores I'm going to try to do some more uploads.

I had this fic playing in my car using text-t0-speech and I had to turn it off when it started making the cassowaries and crocodiles blush. There is some A-Grade smut in this one.  Although this fic is a little mushy in places for my liking, that's purely my preference, and I know some of you will particularly enjoy this entire series. A few of the individual stories are still standouts in my view regardless of their marital or family status. 🙂

Genesis cover

They thought that as long as they had each other they would survive. But what happens when reality begins to blur and their worlds turn upside down?

CW: brief mention of possible suicide (nothing particularly intense)

Ally uses the Emily arc very effectively, by having the case file of another 'Emily' land on Mulder's desk. Although it's not an X-File, it's a chance for he and Scully to head back to San Diego, and discover more about these children who weren't meant to be.

It's a layered story that keeps up the pace throughout as all kinds of drama ensues. I know Ally did some fan art but I don't remember seeing any specifically for her novels. I'm not prepared to trawl through years of tumblr posts to find out for sure either...

Nuptiae Sub Rosa by Xfmaweezy & Sisterspooky1013

68,000 Words

Nuptiae Sub Rosa cover

A series of canon-compliant missing scenes showing that the dynamic of Mulder and Scully’s relationship may have changed much earlier than previously thought.

Xfmaweezy has been a wonderful friend to me while I've been feeling less than awesome, and she sent me this fic to read when I was struggling with reading anything. I'm so glad she did. It certainly cleared me of the lingering angst I was feeling with the heaviness of the Goshen Universe fics. It's humourous, it's serious, and it's hot as hell as it follows the ups and downs of the Mulder-Scully dynamic from Seasons 4 to 7. I love it so much. Thank you K.

Goshen by Bonetree

27,000 Words

A harrowing night in the Virginia mountains makes Mulder and Scully relive parts of their pasts and rethink their future.

Note: The story itself is PG13 (language, violence); the Epilogue is NC17 (younger folks can skip the epilogue and still get the story.)

But wait, there's more! After you've read the story, come back and read some bonus smut, a wonderful parody written by Bonetree as a follow up to Goshen: Goshen Interlude: Nothing Gold Can Stay.

After that you can continue with the other stories in the Goshen universe. They're linked at AO3 but I'll be adding them here as well.

Hi guys. Sorry I've been MIA for so long. I realise it's been a month (there was an extra one I pre-loaded that appeared later) but I've been fighting the nasty brain demons after being made to take a long washout period from old meds before starting new ones. I'm feeling so much better now and want to get back into posting, but I'm not quite there yet.  What I've decided to do to reduce the brain strain is post only links to stories that are on AO3 or ff.net for a little while.  Most of these will be ones I already have covers for.

First up is one I've wanted to post for a long time but couldn't decide whether to post the full series t0gether here as well as link to AO3. My lack of brain helped make that decision for me. I didn't have a cover for Goshen, which surprised me, because I have covers for the rest of the Goshen universe. There likely was one at some stage, and if I come across it I'll upload it.

Without further ado, this is a lovely, angsty stuckfic, with a revisit from Emily. It's a prelude to the 4 novel length stories that follow in the Goshen Universe. You can access them all from the AO3 link, but there's a short, Goshen

*I've just noticed that there are line returns on the version on AO3. I've added a webpage version here for those who use a screen reader and get driven nuts by line breaks.*

Whatever it Takes cover

A year after Emily's "death", Scully gets a strange phone call … and must make a decision

Scully decides that she's prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't miss her last chance. I love a strong Scully who decides she's not going to tolerate Mulder's crap and just goes for what she wants. She should know that Mulder's lost without her.

This one actually has some plot to it, and covers a few holidays as Scully determines her own future.

Mulder's behavior suddenly becomes erratic, his actions evasive as he forces Scully away from a case that's been given to him under mysterious circumstances. And eventually Fox Mulder is faced with the decision of a lifetime.

This is a hard-to-find story from Writergal2000; a mytharc fic set in season 6 with throwbacks to the DAT tape in Anasazi.  There's a bit of unrest between the partners, as Scully gets fed up with Mulder's attempts to protect her.  Things work out of course.

Soap and Eggs by EPurSeMouve

Soap & Eggs cover

Soap And Eggs: A possible future. A might-have-been. A what-if. Or a "There but for the grace of God...."

Soap and Eggs II: An Ivory-White Christmas: A solitary Christmas in San Francisco, California.

Soap and Eggs III: A Grade-AA Valentine's Day: The stage is set for the final conclusion.

Soap and Eggs IV: Suds And Shells: Sometimes, it's hard to decide when to settle for life's leftovers.

*BONUS* Soap and Eggs Happy Ending : This doesn't officially exist. According to EPur "this isn't a part of the Soap and Eggs series. It's just me fooling around, describing on paper what kind of ending the sap in me always wanted." It was exclusive to EPur's website. If you want to remain true to the spirit of the series you can skip it, but if you're human you'll definitely want to read this.

!CW: character death (Not M or S).

If you're after a happy holiday story, look elsewhere!!!

EPurSeMouve stabs you in the heart with this one. Then twists the knife. Then rips it right out of your body and stomps on it. There is a band-aid for you at the end though.

This season 4 end-of-the-X-Files imagining isn't really a whole lot worse than what Chris Carter did to them after "The Truth". It always bothered me when I thought of how difficult their lives would be on the run. The only difference then was that at least they had each other. I'm going to stop now before I cry again. Just make sure you're in a safe place before reading this.

This was one I'd originally intended to release at Halloween, but I was out gallivanting around the country instead. Never mind, it's a late Halloween, almost-Christmas and early Valentine's story.

Neon (Neon Universe Vol 3) by ImAStinker & FancyKatz

179,000 Words

Neon cover

Neon: Mulder is welcomed back to work and Skinner immediately sends them out on  a case in Reno. They're not the only ones with an interest in the area and the time.

I'm Not Irish, So Why'd You Pick On Me?: Mulder has an unusual St Patrick's Day experience.

The Fox and the Hare: Mulder breaks the news prematurely. To appease Scully's ire, he is talked into a very unusual favor that leads to a series of embarrassing situations. The MacLeod children return, to Mulder's dismay, and Mulder's Easter vacation becomes an exercise in domestic survival.

Once again Mulder faces a multitude of tortures, including one I can definitely commiserate with having had to drive for a week in agony through outback Australia looking for help for an abscessed tooth, eventually having to avail myself of the wonderful Royal Flying Doctor Service dentists.  If you are able to support the help they provide to outback communities, please do so. It's easy to take medical services for granted when you don't have to drive 1200km to the nearest dentist... but I digress.

Neon itself is a serious, Mulder-torture filled novel, still set in Season 2, with links to the mytharc.  It has my favourite Mulder-in-a-kilt and a few other situations where he finds himself judged appreciatively . The mood changes somewhat with "I'm Not Irish" and chaos abounds again in "The Fox and the Hare".

The PDF & EPUB versions contain some of CAC's original sketches, including the ones below.

Part of the Neon Universe series:

NEON UNIVERSE VOLUME II

Devil's Advocate: After Scully's recovery post-One Breath, Mulder & Scully pose as newlyweds on a Mystery-Solving cruise to catch a serial killer.

Devil's Advocate II: Sanctuary: Escaped prisoners come across Maggie Scully's house where Mulder is recuperating with the Scully family after their cruise adventure.

You Better Sit Down Now: Valentine's day after the drama at Maggie's. (ImAStinker only)

Not to be confused with another story of the same name, these stories feature a Season 2 Mulder and Scully, posing as a married couple on a cruise ship. I had a bit of a cruise ship binge lately, and there's still more to come...

The second fic features the whole Scully family in peril, as Scully takes Mulder there to recover after the first story.

UPDATE: I've now reuploaded this book with a third story that takes place straight after the other two.  I didn't realise that ImAStinker's fics were all part of the one universe, so there's also more before and after this volume.  I'll be re-releasing this one with the other two volumes of the Neon Universe stories.

The cover I originally made for this one didn't survive the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2021 so the attached fics have a new cover with the extra details on.

Taking Liberties cover

Taking Liberties: While the X-Files are shut down, Mulder drags Scully to California to celebrate her birthday, but the case he's assigned to keeps getting in the way...

Bokor Holiday: Mulder takes it upon himself to save Scully from a voodoo curse, but ends up needing saving himself.

Code of Silence: Scully tricks Mulder into agreeing to participate in hypnotherapy to help him with his insomnia and some recurring nightmares.

Child's Play: Mulder and Scully are given a young girl to baby-sit. What they weren't told is that she 'witnessed' a murder without actually being there.

Mulder and the Stinking, Rotten, Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: Mulder experiences a definite low.

Forgotten Souls: Our heroes may have gotten in over their heads and need a little 'outside' intervention when some old enemies return. First appearance of Dr.Jay.

When Pigs Fly:
Mulder baby-sits some small relatives, much to his dismay, and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong...

Double Vision: Mulder sees and hears strange things after a near death experience from trying vainly to save a woman's life.

Oh, What A Night: On Halloween, Mulder is drafted to baby-sit some small relatives and his well-meaning efforts to take them trick or treating cause nothing but trouble. Co-written by FancyKatz

On The Edge: Mulder finds comfort from his loss with someone who shares it.  [Warning: Post-ep for "3".  Not essential reading if you prefer to deny that episode never happened.]

Cheryl was a very early MSR fanfic author, with these stories written in 1994. All of her stories take place in the same universe, which begins after Mulder and Scully were split up at the end of Season One.  Consequently there are some characters that developed a little differently in this universe, so you occasionally have to forget all you've learned of them since 1994. She's also quite determined to injure Mulder in multiple ways, which can be a lot of fun.

Annie shows up as co-author for the first time in "Oh, What A Night", and they team up to write more stories in Volume 2 and 3 together.

I did release "Devils Advocate" earlier this year, not realising that the other stories were related, so I'm re-releasing that one this week with an extra story added, along with "Neon" (Volume 3).

The image featured on the cover is a sketch by ImAStinker. I tried colourising it for the cover and it turned out a bit of a mess. The original is below. This is one of the sketches that I'll include with Neon in Volume 3.

Topaz by Bardsmaid

110,000 Words

Topaz: Hours after the end of Sanctuary, Alex Krycek has fled west from Owensburg, weak and re-injured. Mulder and Scully are left
wondering which group is behind the disturbing symptoms that developed in Tracy, but critical evidence has been stolen. Will they
return to their old positions at the FBI, or will circumstances turn them in a different direction? That strange man Mulder noticed in the hospital hallway--surveillance video will reveal a second man no one can identify, both of them dressed identically, right down to the tie. And what will become of Krycek's promise to help Mulder find out once and for all what happened to his sister?

Volume 3 of the Sanctuary series contains Part 4, 'Topaz'.  You'll need to read the other parts first.

Bardsmaid passed away before this story could be completed. I've republished Topaz along with the first 3 parts of the series despite the lack of resolution as I really enjoyed reading where the story was heading. If you like your stories to have an ending, don't proceed.

Alternatively, you could consider this an epilogue to Sanctuary.  If you don't want to read the whole thing only to be left hanging, I've marked a place in Chapter 3 on the PDF/EPUB versions that you can read to to give you the answer to some questions without opening too many new cans of worms. I actually got to the end of what's available and thought I'd missed copying some of it because I was so engrossed that  I thought I'd only read 40,000 or so words rather than the 100,000 words  I'd consumed.

Additionally, the prologue of Topaz is a vignette called "Half-Life" that was written separately to Topaz and can be read on its own.

Vale Bardsmaid.

Sanctuary:  On the run from the Smoking Man, Mulder and Scully go undercover in Kentucky, hoping the Beeson-Lymon case will lead them to information that will finally bring CSM down.  Meanwhile, Alex Krycek slowly recovers from a gunshot wound with the help of an unlikely caregiver from whom he can hide nothing.  CSM hatches a nefarious plot to draw Mulder and Scully out into the open.  Help, and resolution, come from unlikely quarters.

This second volume contains part 3 of the Sanctuary series. You absolutely have to read them all in order so grab the first two parts here.

Bardsmaid managed to somewhat redeem Krycek in this one, bestowing some humanity on him without it feeling at all forced.  By the time I got to this one I was all in and didn't even notice how long it was.

This includes the Sanctuary postscripts. As the sequel to Sanctuary was never completed, you may choose to end your journey here, but I strongly recommend that you keep going with Topaz.

BTW, I may have gotten confused with which tags belong on which volumes. I just recently re-read them all in one huge binge and can't remember what happened when...

Paradise Lost + Walking Through Fire by Bardsmaid

89,000 Words

PL WTF cover
Part of the Sanctuary series:

Paradise Lost: Mulder is dismissed from the Bureau on trumped-up charges of having had contact with the X-files. Stripped of his driving motivation as well as his job, he's forced to look critically at his life. Scully, reassigned to a teaching position at Quantico, must balance her new responsibilities with her concern about her former partner's well-being. And Alex Krycek insinuates himself into Mulder's life for reasons that are not immediately apparent.

Walking Through Fire: Determined to gain reinstatement at the Bureau, Mulder searches for a way to bring Cancer Man down while also confronting the grim reality of unemployment, and Scully's responsibilities increase as she juggles her new assignment with her continued support of her ex-partner's quest. But Skinner requests her forensic expertise in an ongoing investigation, saddling her with an additional burden that may prove more than she can bear. A ghost from Teena Mulder's past prompts her to finally open up to her son, though the information she offers has the potential to crush him. And Alex Krycek inadvertently provides the evidence Mulder needs to foil the Smoking Man.

The Sanctuary Trilogy+ is a masterpiece of fanfic by Bardsmaid. She appeared to have a real sense of comfort with the characters and not only  did she make existing characters her own, she created rich, real characters that could have changed the trajectory of the show post Season 7 if only CC & co had thought of them.  I can't help but wonder what S8 would have been like had they introduced a character like Agent Wilkins who was eager to help rather than antagonise.

This series diverges from canon at the beginning of Season 6, so all the usual favourites are involved in a complex mytharc plot.  Take some time off and really immerse yourself in this one.

There are 4 parts to this series, which I've spit into three volumes. Whilst the Sanctuary Trilogy itself was completed, Topaz, the sequel Bardsmaid was writing at the time of her passing was not, but is included here as an optional extra.

Bardsmaid's website is still available at bardsmaid.org, and her original images can be found there and in the attached epub/pdf versions. New covers are included here due to the tiny size of the original pics.

PS  Leland is a much better name for CSM. He's so not a 'Carl'.

Nevdull doesn't give too much away with her summary, so I went into this one not knowing what to expect, which was good, because had I noticed it was to do with Season 7 Mytharc I may not have read it at all... I'm often very prejudicial in that way.

This is a truly unique and fascinating treatment of the mytharc we were lumped with in S7.  Krycek and Marita get a look in (plus some backstory), joining Mulder and Scully in a determination to get to the bottom of the information found on the alien ship and save humanity. Instead of Mulder claiming to have found the key to everything and Scully rolling her eyes, this Mulder and Scully just do what needs to be done.

Reach + Sokol by Khyber

99,000 Words

Reach+Sokol cover

The Reach-Sokol series includes:

  • reach: Mulder and Scully are called off an X-file to an emergency assignment where they have some time alone together. Their reflections and thoughts about the events of the past year lead them both to make certain decisions…
  • day 17: The slipperier part of the seventeenth day of The Great Adventure. Two words—Tattoo Story. Erotica with character insight
  • day 19: Skinner discovers the agents’ relationship through a mysterious package.
  • eldorado bones: Old times and old friends.
  • sokol: A boy, a girl, a girl, a spaceship, and how things end.
  • day 51: Mulder and Scully have sex in the back of a Datsun 260Z… no, seriously, that’s it.
  • dancing skeleton day: Takes place at Christmas 1998, six months after “Reach” and “Sokol,”
  • terminus post quem: Whatever happened to…? Takes place in summer 2002, four years after “Reach” and “Sokol”.

Khyber takes our agents to some original and unique places. He also gives the partners a fun and adventurous sex life without overdoing it, with a few short smutfics interspersed with the main stories. The angst is also tempered with the kind of off-the-cuff snark that Mulder likes to make, and Scully sometimes adopts, and all the ingredients are there for a very entertaining series.

This one's a little large for a story page, but the other usual options are available.

I don't know who made the original covers, but they were originally posted in Khyber's part of alanna.net, but I hadn't seen them at khyberfic.net (this could just be a wayback machine archive issue.) I also spent an entire day making one myself before I realised there were pre-existing covers, so I'm going to include that one here too. 😀

Cunegund’s Restoration by LiviaB

Cunegund's Restoration cover

Despite the "hard news" angle taken by his correspondent Christiane Amanpour, CNN Washington Bureau Chief Frank Sesno finally got to the point and asked the question everybody had been silently asking themselves. "So, Agent Mulder, how did the spacecraft handle?"

A Post-Requiem Mulder-Returns-in-the-happiest-possible-way fic.

After the comparative angst of Livia's "Hem Ben Ik" I thought you might like a happy ending story.  This has to bring a smile to your face, and it's surprisingly light on sap as Livia ties up more loose endings than CC did in 11 Seasons and 2 movies. 🙂

Hem Ben Ik by LiviaB

Hem Ben Ik cover

When no one is who they seem to be, whom do you trust?

Hot Damn is right. I don't remember coming across this fic before; I only went searching for it after I found a dustjacket for it and was intrigued. I'm glad I found it. I had no idea where it was coming from or heading to, and it totally really blew me sideways. Plus the flashback was one of the hottest "all things" fics I've ever read.

I'm disappointed that I found no more of this would-be series, but even the note at the end that there was more planned was enough to allow me to smile, knowing it wasn't supposed to be the end of the story.

The dustjacket is from Livia's website so I'm assuming it's her art. Sorry if I butchered it a little in my compulsion to force all the cover art into a 3:4 ratio...

Puppets Trilogy by M Partous

Puppets Trilogy cover

Mulder, driven by a need to understand what really happened to his father, decides to head back to the silo (Piper Maru/Apocrypha) to find Alex Krycek, who he's convinced he heard crying out when he and Scully were there.

!CW: consent is freely given, but under circumstances that could be considered duress.

As stated in the author's notes, her wish was to explore the M/S relationship in a way that it "gives them a kind of mystical strength, one that frightens the powers that be, one that could actually help them in their quest for the truth"

Whilst their first time is under less than perfect circumstances, it connects them in a special way that continues through the challenges they face in the rest of the stories. I do have a special love for an early connection between our agents, and this one feels right for them.

Keeping it in the Family I & II by Gemma Kingsley

39,000 Words

Book Cover: Keeping it in the Family I & II by Gemma Kingsley

Keeping It in the Family: Believe the Lie, but how deep does the deceit run? What will Mulder and Scully do after Gethsemane and how is Bill Scully involved in all this?

Keeping It in the Family II: Even when on vacation in Hawaii and trying to adjust to their new relationship, Mulder and Scully find themselves investigating another case.

More Bill Jr angst for Scully, post Gethsemane. Poor Scully's been through the wringer lately in the fics I've uploaded. I'll have to give her some mindless smut next to make up for it.

Once again, Scully's family have been used against her, and Gemma is particularly cruel with her storyline. 😉   Fortunately Mulder has returned to life to keep her safe, and satisfied...

Anamorphosis by Eponine119

106,000 Words

Anamorphosis cover

Assigned to find a horrifying serial murderer, Agent Scully discovers things about herself and her past that she never suspected.

Anamorphosis - Greek, to form anew. "the unfoldment of destinies follows ...upon the fall of outer circumstances...[a] substantial event was actually but a veil, a tissue of circumstance, conjured forth or the realization of a plot already formed." [Joseph Campbell, Creative Mythology]

!Numerous content warnings apply: child sexual abuse, recovered memories, rape (not described), suicidal ideations, dissociative disorder.

I know some of you like Scully!Torture, alongside Mulder!Caring of course, and Eponine119 certainly delivers in this one. She throws everything imaginable and worse at Scully in this story. Eponine does take some liberties with the Scully family, but they're entirely believable and usually make more sense than canon. If you like some pain with your MSR, this story will give you plenty of that.

Once upon a time there was a cover created by Mystic, but I can't get my hands on it. 🙁

Picks up from Biogenesis and tells the story of a long and perilous journey—both inner and outer. All good journeys begin with clarity.

After realising how much smut I'd put in my July Fic Frenzy I'm trying to end with some smut-free fic.  This is ringfic, with Fowley as Mulder's ex-wife. Scully rescues Mulder from the hospital post-Biogenesis before going to a hideout where Mulder details his life after Samantha and before Scully.

Absolute Beginners by Diehard

43,000 Words

Absolute beginners cover
Part of the Absolute Beginners series:

BOOK ONE: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Our heroes finally decide to do the dirty deed. Sex, love, all the rest. What might have occurred before the last two thirds of Season 7.

BOOK TWO: BETTER WITH PRACTICE

Two Weeks after Book One.

BOOK THREE: COMES THE MORNING

Mulder and Scully have been together for about two weeks after the events in Absolute Beginners, and it’s now the day after the events in Better With Practice.

This is a binge-worthy classic from Diehard as our agents embark on a new relationship.

The images were all done by Circe Invidiosa for her website, which hosts a number of excellent authors, so I've set the web link to go there. You can admire all the work she's done getting her old website back up and running and the amount of effort she's put in, not just for her own fics, but for heaps of other fabulous authors.

Once you've finished reading this one, you can head to the sequel, "The Whole Catastrophe" in the series link.

Camp Hero by McKab

Part of the Old Friends series:

A continuation of Requiem. Mulder is abducted and Scully receives some incredible news... naturally she reaches out to some friends for support.

Vox Series by Catwoman

17,000 Words

Vox sereis cover

Vox: This story’s been running around in my head since I first saw ‘All Souls’, and when I watched it again tonight I knew I had to write this down. See, as with many of this seasons angst-infested episodes, ‘All Souls’ made me feel physically sick, just because of the general unfairness of it all. We know from the episode that the events in the episode also made Scully sick, emotionally if nothing else. I would guess that Scully was haunted by the events of the episode, and will continue to be haunted by them, for quite some time afterward. Well, I think it’s about time Mulder sees what losing Emily has done to Scully, and what he’s doing to aggravate the hurt.

Wait: Nobody ever forgets where a hatchet is buried. Sequel to ‘Vox’.

Ice: Basically Mulder and Scully are just going to spend this entire story just bitching and moaning at each other angrily. If you’re not into that sort of thing, back out now. I’m warning you–MAJOR ANGST!!!

Red: Final story in the Vox Series. Mulder and Scully get a clue.

Although not a direct post-ep for 'All-Souls', this fic details how the chronic ScullyTorture in Season 5 may have affected Scully and impacted the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

Blood of Angels by LoneGunGuy

68,000 Words

Blood of Angels cover

"History is not written in books, Agent Scully, but in an alphabet of human suffering. Every death leaves its mark upon the aether, burnt into the astral plane, scorched into the very fabric of the universe—a textbook accessible to any man who is willing to annihilate himself in its pursuit. History is a manuscript written on the clouds. Authored by the blood of angels.”

As Scully lies on the sidewalk, dead, Mulder holds the murder weapon in his hands and knows that he must have had a damned good reason for killing her....if only he could remember what it was....A bizarre, labyrinthine mystery with darkly comic overtones.

This is an early X-Files fanfic classic, written by the talented LoneGunGuy in 1996.  This one isn't for the faint of heart, it can get dark. With imaginations as twisted as those of some fanfic authors, I'm so glad they're putting them into good use rather than letting them roam the streets creating havoc. 😉

I can have mixed feelings regarding the mytharc on the show that makes me shy away from reading stories dealing with aliens and cloning and all that stuff, but there are many, like this one, that blow it out of the water.

Sadly, to my knowledge, a sequel to this story was never forthcoming.

Temporary Shelter by Gwendolyn

13,500 Words

Temporary Shelter cover

Mulder and Scully recoup after the events of Biogenesis and learn something from history about repeating mistakes.

Gwendolyn has beautifully crafted this story to make it easily imaginable, and definitely preferable to what we saw in the Sixth Extinction. 😉

Locusts by Syn

Locusts cover

An unexpected death begins a terrible journey for Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, one that threatens to tear their faith, their beliefs and their partnership apart.

There is a character death or two, but nobody major. Let's just say Bill's lost some of his bluster in this one.

Syn brings us an engaging  mytharc story with twists and turns and up and downs (mostly downs) as Scully is living a waking nightmare of betrayal and emotional torture, while Mulder is fighting to be believed.  An excellent story set shortly after Emily, and featuring a slightly annoying Detective Kresge.

An adventure-filled story set just before "all things" in Season 7.

“Your mom and Charlie can come, too.” He saw her actually start to listen to the suggestion. “The only thing for miles around is a lodge. They have a barbeque planned and some fireworks. There’s a lake and several miles of trails and —”

“Just an everyday, ordinary vacation?”

“Yep. Is that so hard to believe, Scully?”

She grinned and opened the door. “Mulder, with you around that’s just about as likely as aliens landing tomorrow.”

I've also included a PG-13 version of this one.

Mulder decides to take some of the Scully family members away for a vacation. Maggie decides that Mulder and Scully should vacation alone. She does end up joining them in Vegas though, and the real action begins there. While this is a crossover, Nicole doesn't want to give anything away too early, and it's not necessary to have knowledge (or memory) of the other situation.

Although they're in Vegas for a specific reason that's not noromo friendly, I've included a PG-13 version because that reason doesn't dampen their bantery relationship at all, and thought some people may enjoy the other action.  Click on the PG dustjacket below to read the smut-free version.

It was supposed to be a simple investigation of a serial killer... until the mind of the killer was made known. Mulder struggles against truths and lies in the mind of a murderer, while Scully fights against shadows and conspiracies for the sanity of her partner.

Content Warning: Profiler!Mulder is violent towards Scully a number of times in this story.

Tara writes beautifully, so at least while she's putting you through an emotional wringer you can appreciate that she's doing it with such vivid imagery.  😉  This is one for the angst addicts. Be prepared to hurt for a while.

Sometimes, rarely, I have a dustjacket for a story I can't locate. I'd been looking for this fic for a while until finally stumbling across a Palm Pilot edition.  I've managed to convert it to usable formats for us all to enjoy, so please enjoy this fabulous "Mulder and Scully fall apart without each other thanks to meddling Fowley" fic. Whilst our agents sometimes let their heads overrule their hearts, and their silent communication can fail, they know where they belong.

The "X-Libris" download option will take you to the story posted in another section of the site. It's something I'm trialing at the moment. And you get a .docx file instead of a .txt file because I got tired of converting it to different formats. 🙂

After a personal tragedy has torn them apart, Mulder and Scully wonder if their relationship is broken beyond repair.

This is an AU in that it makes no reference to Season 8 or 9, but William exists. Lots of angst. I like it to hurt 😉 But there is a happy ending.

Also, Mulder is as bad a psychologist as he is in canon.

Player by Wayne Schmidt

67,000 Words

Player cover

Mulder and Scully have to retrace the steps of an early X-Files agent to find out how and why he disappeared.

From the author: My motivation for writing this story was that if Mulder was as smart as they made him out to be in the beginning of the series (Mulder seems to me to have become less intelligent as the series worked its way into the final years) he would have won at least some of the cases involving confrontations with the smoking man. Player gave Mulder the opportunity to play in the big leagues. (Text changed slightly to avoid spoilers)

The events in this story take place before the death of Mulder's mother. I've tagged it as an early seasons fic as well as season 6 as it really has that early feel, and there are no real spoilers for other episodes to speak of.

I'll forgive Wayne his noromo blasphemy as this is a bloody good novel.  It's written with intelligence and detail, leading up to a massive climax. This feels so much like a throwback to earlier seasons Morgan & Wong, developed with the feel of an action movie. It's very much of the train surfing Mulder genre.

I've linked to Wayne's website - waynesthisandthat.com - should you wish to explore his other writing.

The extra cover image displayed in the ePub & PDF stories is actually the HOF Stamp of Approval for this story.

Part of the Invariants series:

"This is an AU story in which I play fast and loose with the first season. While I’m just as glad that Ethan got eliminated from the actual show (I don’t think he would have added much on the screen) I thought it would be fun to play out the relationship here as Scully gets dragged deeper and deeper into the X-Files."

Syntax6 is a legend, as this story and its sequel demonstrate.

Syn gives Scully's deleted boyfriend Ethan a big role in the first season as she weaves some extra cases in for Mulder and Scully to solve. This follows the agents from their first meeting to the return of Scully after her abduction. And while this is Scully/Ethan, Ethan doesn't seem to be doing it for her once she starts on the X-Files.

Verlassen Series by TexxasRose

Verlassen cover

Verlassen: The knowledge Mulder receives from an informant is more dangerous than ever before. How much will he sacrifice to guarantee Scully's safety?

Guarded Secrets: It’s been two months since Mulder’s return from Verlassen, and he is almost fully recovered. Just as things seem to be working out for the happy couple, danger strikes again from unexpected sources.

Once again, TexxasRose brings on the Muldertorture, then she ups the stakes when things are starting to go well and tortures them both. There's a little actual torture involved as well as the beginnings of sexual assault, but nothing too graphic. Mulder gets a kitten, so that should make up for the unsavoury events. 😉

Necessary Evils by Hannah Mason

This could be considered a continuation of the world created in "Lesser Evils", but the two stories are not explicitly linked.  If you're going to read both, it's best to read them in order.

Hannah/Syn has Scully hit Mulder where it hurts the most in this one.  Multiple hearts are ripped out with almost surgical precision, but she also knows how to make us whole again. 🙂

If, like me, you can't get enough of Syntax6's writing, she's just released her 4th novel.  I don't want to give details here, where her "legit" writing can be associated with her fanfic, but if you love the way she manages to pull twists out of nowhere, you'll want to follow this link to her webpage for more information.

Six Hours in New York is included as a prologue.

Set post-Tithonus, before Two Fathers. A routine murder investigation in Chicago where not everything is as it seems.

Blue Samutra is a fabulous author who also made great dustjackets, so she's a particular favourite of mine. 😉

This is a compelling story with a slightly fragile Scully and protective Mulder sent to Chicago after a rather grisly murder by AD Cassidy, much to AD Kersh's disdain, to lure out a serial killer.

While they're not exactly working undercover, they do have to stake out a nightclub and dress the part, so I've added the undercover tag for the little dress-up scenario which has Mulder quite enraptured. 🙂

Six Hours in New York is an achingly beautiful Maggie Scully perspective of Mulder's arrival at the hospital in NY that really sets the scene of where our agents are at in their personal relationship (0bviously One Son hasn't happened yet though).

All Hallow's Eve cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

Driving back to Washington on Halloween evening Mulder and Scully see strange lights in the sky over rural Maryland, stop to investigate, and find themselves spending a night they will not soon forget.

This one started out fairly painlessly, but Sue pushed the angst up each year as she added a new volume and sucked us in further.  But wait, there's more! There's also a shorter story called "The Messenger" that works as an epilogue which I'll post separately as it fits into a few of the different universes that Windsinger was writing at the time.  (There's a Cliff's notes guide to all the series involved at the end of that fic so you can follow it without having to read every story. )

In the midst of his unbearable suffering aboard the alien ship, Mulder reaches out and makes unexpected contact with an amazing ally. With the help of another old friend, the messenger sets forth. It's All Hallow's Eve and anything can happen.

This fic links together a few of the universes Windsinger was writing in.  It works as an epilogue to the All Hallow's Eve series, but it slots into the My Travels with Charley series and features Jake from her two Red Shoe Diary crossover fics, Jake's Luck and Jake and Fox Join the Club.

According to Windsinger "This is one weird story. I'm posting it as a stand- alone because I can't figure out what series to put it under. It's especially for the fans of my 'All Hallow's Eve' series which I 'finished' over two years ago. Consider this an epilogue. In fact it will probably make much more sense to them then to anyone. I'm also placing it as Chapter V of 'My Travels with Charley' series (a little something for Dana.) To make things even more confusing, Jake of my two-novel Jake series (Jake of Red Shoes Diaries) also makes an important appearance. To help out everyone -- even for those who have read everything but who need a refresher -- a synopsis of what you need to know about All Hallow's Eve, My Travels with Charley AND Jake are included at the end of chapter 2 of The Messenger. Just for fun -- try to figure it out by yourself first. I dare you....

Plague cover

Summary in one short sentence: Mulder and Scully are spared from a
plague that sweeps the earth.

Author's note: This is a long story. It is set after Memento Mori, but
before Gethsemane. [Actually, Gethsemane wouldn't have happened if this
had.] Mostly it would fall into the category of angst, but it has a
little bit of just about everything: Mulder/Scully romance including
sex, mythology, a plot, and a [sort of] crossover.

!Plenty of character deaths, but not the two that matter most.

You may not wish to read plague-fic during a global pandemic, but eponine119 couldn't have possibly imagined what it's like for many people right now. This fic bears no resemblance to our current circumstances and might help you appreciate that whilst Covid-19 has been turned into a ridiculous political  soap-opera, at least we weren't all wiped out in days. 🙂

I assume that the cover image (the important part of it, below) was made by Eponine119

Road (Going Nowhere) Series by Nicole Perry

165,000 Words

Road Series 1
Part of the Road Series Universe series:

Scully is injured in a blast in which lives are lost. She was the target, so she and Mulder take off, knowing also that that they will be blamed. The pair travel the width of the country in an effort to escape those who are after them.

This starts as a short story, set in Season 3, but it quickly gets out of hand and ends up as an epic series.

From Nicole (in Goin' Nowhere): This is a dark story that I love.  It was wild -- the idea literally leaped into my mind this morning and plagued me all day. It was all I could do to get home and write it down.

The stories include:

  1. Goin' Nowhere
  2. Passing Through
  3. At the Blue Hotel
  4. Down the Tracks
  5. A Divided Highway
  6. City Limits*

*City Limits is an incomplete WIP. I've put a note at the end of the completed stories so you can decide whether or not you'd like to leave them in a happy place or continue on. City Limits has only 5 chapters posted, and remains eternally incomplete.

It's sad that this epic series remains unfinished, but I can't even imagine what it would be like to work on a project for this many years, so I'm totally surprised that Nicole managed to put out as much as she did.

I'm not really a fan of the premise of this fic, but this is well written and didn't bother me for some reason.

I'm uploading another story, written by Wendy Wiliams, called "Cul-de-Sac" for anyone who needs something light hearted when they get to the end. This story is in the Roads Series universe, and is a humourous meta-based fic with a cameo from Nicole and a cast of characters from the Order of the Blessed Saint Scully the Enigmatic. It was authorised by Nicole, so could technically be considered canon...  It begins at the end of A Divided Highway.

The world of MSR fanfic has many wonderful stories about the "first time." Here's one about the changes and adjustments that follow. Mulder and Scully suffer through their own insecurities as they take on the Consortium. Some jealousy for Mulder.

Kel isn't one of those author's names that you hear spoken of reverently in the XF fanfic world, but by the gods she can write some intricate plots. Not only that, but this one is interlaced with the kind of humour that almost borders on the ridiculous at times, and just makes you feel good.

There are bonus cameos from Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Newt Gingrich to add to the fun.

Snapshot by Dawson E Rambo

125,000 Words

Book Cover: Snapshot by Dawson E Rambo

Dawson Rambo thought he was writing a vignette about Mulder & Scully's need for comfort from each other after a tough case. In fact he was writing a novel expanding on this and veering into a mytharc-based X-File epic which puts them up against all kinds of agencies with initialisms from all over the alphabet.

This one's a classic in early MSR. It's an action-adventure-romance written in early season 4 and while it was intended as a vignette it got a bit carried away.

Dawson was flying by the seat of his pants through most of this one, but I think without his ongoing author's notes it won't be so obvious.  I've moved the majority of the notes to the end of the fic, because there were nearly 10,000 words in disclaimers and notes alone, and I don't think you.ll need the detailed instructions on how to ask for missing chapters using his auto email response while reading a complete version.  I've still included them all for nostalgic purposes; you just have to go to the end of the fic to read through them.  For the full 1997 experience you can flick back and forth using the table of contents on the PDF or ePub versions.  You will learn that you could possibly have obtained an Adobe Acrobat copy back then, and you could get a zip version if you didn't have a Mac. 😉

You should at least have a glimpse at the end notes when you've finished reading though. There are  some interesting glimpses into Dawson's mind as he's writing. It's interesting to see what's happening in his head as he's writing, and the author answers a few long-standing curiosities about himself at one stage.  😀

Book Cover: Remember Me? by Caroline O

Mulder and Scully have been forcibly separated from each other for fifteen months. Scully has a new life, but no knowledge of her previous one.

Happy Mother's Day to mothers of all descriptions. A bonus fic for the occasion: this fic is one that's even enjoyable for those of us who don't do kidfic.  Scully has a baby, and a partner, but it's not all as it seems. There are many twists and turns to keep you reading.

1,000 Rainy Days by RL Montoya

Book Cover: 1,000 Rainy Days by RL Montoya

When Scully begins experiencing a strange form of
empathy, it affects her work on an abduction case. Mulder reacts
oddly, becoming more and more attracted to her because of it, but
the consequences of and reasons for her new ability are more far-
reaching than either of them realize.

Although the author rated this R, it's probably at least borderline NC-17.

RL took three years to pen this X-File with MSR, set in Season 3-4.  While the agents know what they want, the uncertainty about changing their relationship keeps the UST churning for a while.  After some ups and downs they do work it all out. Oops. Spoiler alert. 😉

Thanks to the person who whispered in my ear that I'd forgotten to upload the files... I've done that a few times lately but usually caught myself... hopefully this will make me remember!

Painted across the barren and desolate reaches of Texas, the shadows of the Project put additional pressure on Scully and Mulder’s already fragile relationship. Finally, the investigation leads to an inevitable tragedy and Mulder and Scully find that more questions have been asked than answered.

I've linked to the fic at xffics for the ePub & mobi versions. That site has been playing up so if you have problems please hit report and let me know and I'll upload to my own server. 🙂

I made the choice a long time ago not to read this fic, and I can't remember why now. 😀    It's a classic fic and you should have the chance to read it, not read it, or re-read it too.

Needless to say, I've had to guess the tags.

There is another dustjacket for this fic, from the Annex, and one more from Chronicle X, which I believe to be by Kris.

Guardian & Renewal by ImXFScully

Guardian & Renewal cover

Amy notes: "When I first watched "The Ehrlenmeyer Flask," I was still offline and cut off from other Philes -- in other words, I feared I had just seen the end of one of my favorite shows. I was very disappointed -- as good an episode as that was, I couldn't bear to think of it all ending that way. I thought up my own version of how I would have "liked" to see the show wrap up. Later, of course, I learned that the show would return, and tossed this idea out of my mind. A few weeks ago, though, I decided to put a different spin on it and turn it into this story."

This fic assumes that Mulder left the FBI at the end of Season One. He and Scully do find each other again, before Mulder makes a sacrifice that impacts them all. Angst ensues.

Whole Truth (The) by Admiralty

95,000 Words

Whole Truth cover

Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley, a partnership of like minds. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, a partnership of perfect opposites. A journey beginning pre-XF and throughout the series exploring these relationships. (Includes Mulder, Diana, and Scully POVs)

Chaps 1-5: pre XF- Pilot
Chap 6: S2-S5
Chap 7: The End
Chap 8-9: Fight the Future/ The Beginning
Chap 10: Drive/ Triangle
Chap 11-12: Two Fathers/ One Son
Chap 13: Arcadia-Field Trip
Chap 14-17: Biogenesis arc

Although this fic examines the Mulder/Fowley relationship, it is MSR. It gives a lot of insight into the behaviour we see on screen, and adds so much depth to all of these characters.  Admiralty  even made Diana almost actually likeable. Or appreciable anyway.  It gives a whole new understanding of the motivations and events of seasons 5 to 7.

Aftermath by Zuffy

71,000 Words

Aftermath cover

This series began with the devastating effects One Son had on Mulder and Scully's partnership, and continued through their desperate attempt to understand the alien threat and the complex loyalties of Diana and other players. Parts 3 and 4 take place after Biogenesis as Scully and Mulder try to come to terms with his mysterious illness. There's a shippy end for believers...

I've been having a bit of a post One Son indulgence lately so there may be some more juicy One Son fics coming...

In this one Zuffy weaves an elaborate mytharc story around the canon from Two Fathers/One Son to Amor Fati, and challenges our beloved heroes to save each other, not knowing who they can trust.

Human Credentials by Scarlet Baldy

73,000 Words

Book Cover: Human Credentials by Scarlet Baldy

As both agents decide to forget what almost happened in that hallway, Scully tries to deal with a clinical depression which was just waiting to happen. The fact that Mulder resumed his relationship with Fowley is not helping. A mysterious letter sends him on another wild goose chase in a country far far away. Scully and Fowley ‘try’ to temper their mutual animosity to find him. The agents will find out that travelling can be a mind altering experience, in the true sense of the word.

This story begins right after the movie and gradually evolves into its own alternate universe. A.D Kersh never existed, the Consortium didn’t turn to ashes, and Fowley never worked - or slept - with CSM.

Book II - Lendemains
This is the morning after Human Credentials' last book ended. Mulder, Scully and her clone Faye are on the run. The world is being ravaged by a mysterious and lethal virus. And the bees are back.  NOTE: THIS STORY IS INCOMPLETE BUT INCLUDED HERE FOR THE CURIOUS.  There are only 5 chapters so it barely begins, unfortunately. You might be able to consider it an epilogue. 🙂

I only have one cover for this one, but I have the thumbnails for the rest.  The HC1 front and back cover are by Pinky and the HC2 front and back cover are by Invisigoth.

Solitary Confinement by Jean Robinson

Book Cover: Solitary Confinement by Jean Robinson

Being alone with your thoughts can be worse than sharing them.

Here's a bonus fic for anyone who's self-isolating or social distancing to avoid COVID-19.  🙂

Jean explores life in the 30 day quarantine that followed 'Firewalker', with the added trauma of Scully still experiencing post-abduction issues.

Once upon a time there was a dustjacket for this fic on the WIPs of Our Lives website (formerly at http://sciencex.tzo.com/xf/solitary.jpg), but alas, no more. If anyone has a copy please send it my way.

Full Circle to the Truth by Des

Special Agent Diana Fowley. Special Agent Dana Scully. What do they mean to Fox Mulder? Does he know? If not, how far do you have to go to find the truth? I thought it was time to find out.

This was a last minute substitution so again tags have been added from my appalling doddery old woman's memory.

This is more Fowley-induced angst. I can't remember much of the specifics, but I do remember the smut. 😉   I'm pretty sure Kersh's office is involved at some point.

Apologies to these awesome authors that it's the smut that stays with me rather than the plot they put all that time and effort into; it's not you it's me. I'm going to post some non-smut soon just to prove that I do remember some stories for their storylines.

Flavours Series by Lilith

18,000 Words

Book Cover: Flavours Series by Lilith

Includes Bitter and Butter Pecan.

Bitter and Butter Pecan and the four-part Flavours follow up reflect Lilith's anger with Mulder after One Son. Scully receives a series of unusual birthday suprises.

Scully’s birthday present was only the beginning. An offer, an acceptance, and a refusal.

Oops, I'm late for Scully's birthday. Never mind, this treat doesn't have a use-by date.

This is another post One Son angst-o-rama, which I have a bit of a penchant for.  With the way Mulder behaved in One Son, I like to give Scully a pass to do whatever the fuck she wants to show Mulder what a stupid jerk he was. 🙂

Having Marita come to Scully is an ingenious plot point that you don't see very often, and it reinforces that Scully doesn't need Mulder. On the other hand, Mulder does need Scully, and the Lone Gunmen are there to help things along .

What happens after the funeral in Emily...

A lesson for CC:  When you give the agents life-changing angst, don't just ignore it the next week, make it count by turning it into a rampant smutfest.   Mulder helps Scully deal with the aftermath of Emily.

Breeding Discontent by FatCat

Book Cover: Breeding Discontent by FatCat

Mulder and Scully are abducted and when they are returned, things have changed.

After being missing for two months, when they were found, conclusions were leapt to and evidence tampered with.  Just another day on the X-Files....    On top of that, some ardent loving is walked in on, and there's some video evidence gleefully provided by some voyeuristic members of the consortium.  It's only glancingly mytharc.

Content warning: there is dubcon involved in this (they were drugged but otherwise willing).

Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

83,000 Words

Book Cover: Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

This story was originally a short post-Kitsunegari vignette. Then by request, Shalimar kept adding parts until it became this masterpiece.  One of the (multitude of) big plot holes of The X-Files that was never addressed by the 1013 writers was the fetus, created from Scully's egg, that Mulder discovered during the episode "Emily." Nor was the emotional fallout of that episode, and its startling revelations, on their partnership ever dealt with during the series.  "Five Years and One Night" addresses both of those issues, through the creation of an alternative universe that begins in the aftermath of "Kitsunegari", then takes off into its own complicated plot-line six months later, when Mulder arrives to disrupt the carefully reordered life that Scully has created for herself across the continent, away from him and the X-Files. An emotional tale, set in the exotic surroundings of Singapore.

I decided that I just had to post this story, but I'm happy to remove it on request.  I'm counting on the fact that it's 21 years old now and if Shalimar ever even thinks of the story any more, she'd be happy to know that it's still being enjoyed.  This is super-angsty Emily fallout fic, with loads of action including some wild and frenzied adult action. It's definitely a classic.

Preponderance by Alanna

Preponderance (Books 1 & II)

Guilt is painted in shades of grey. When Scully is involved in a serious crime, how will Mulder react?

This fic is a meal of angst and emotional torture, with a side order of smut.  Alanna sets our agents on an extremely emotional journey, with a divide that seems impossible to bridge.  But have faith.

Diametrically Opposed by Mountainphile

Book Cover: Diametrically Opposed by Mountainphile
Part of the Synchronicity Universe series:

Mulder and Scully investigate the mysterious disappearance of a college student in Ohio.  Circumstances demand that they work from divergent ends of the spectrum, unearthing old wounds while opening new doors to the truth.

This isn't so much a sequel to Seeds of Synchronicity, but it is set in the same universe. They can be read independently.

Mountainphile's come up with another story that puts Ten Thirteen to shame with 'Diametrically Opposed'.  Not only does this have an intricate plot and heaps of action, it also questions Mulder's uncharacteristic acceptance of the walk-ins as Samantha's fate in Closure.  Plus, I LOVE a story where Scully's right in the action while Mulder's caught up following questionable leads.  Although technically set in Season 8, it assumes Requiem never happened.

No Greater Love by Karen Rasch

57,000 words

Book Cover: No Greater Love by Karen Rasch

Mulder and Scully travel to a small town in Missouri to investigate a series of deaths involving a faith healer. Along the way, questions are raised concerning their relationship and their feelings towards matters of the spirit.  Winner of multiple 1996 Spooky awards.

I feel a bit dirty after posting so much smut during my recent brain-fog issue, so now that I'm feeling a little better I thought I'd continue with some fics with a little more substance (ie plot).  This one is an USTy classic from Karen.  The tension is almost at breaking point.  There's lots of Scully-angst, thanks to the Emily arc, and therefore Mulder-angst-by-proxy, plus some more angst thrown in for good measure.  You might need tissues for some of the angsty but sweet MSR moments.
