Behind the White Curtain by Ficlady

3,800 Words

Behind the White Curtain cover

A stakeout turns voyeuristic!

You can count on Mulder to lead them straight into temptation trouble. I do love seeing them try to cope in the most awkward of situations, and Ficlady has definitely done that with this little story.

Field Where… (The) Series by Ginef

38,000 Words

The Field Where... series cover

The Field Where I Lied: Scully reflects on her relationship with Mulder and how the events of the episode TFWID will change things. This is not a pretty story, nor does it have a happy ending (but it does leave the potential for one).

The Field Where She Lied: Mulder takes a good, hard look at his life and what the events of the episode TFWID have done to it. (!CW - suicidal ideation)

The Field Where Max Fenig Arrived: Mulder and Scully are asked to assist Scotland Yard on a case involving a series of murders and possible alien abductions in Southern England while struggling to cope with their changing relationship.

Post-eps for "The Field Where I Died".

Ginef claims to have considered TFWID one of the best episodes in a long time, but then was compelled to 'fix' it with fanfic. 😛 Sorry, Ginef, that's my own attitude towards the episode coming through. Not that it was that bad, it just wasn't that good either IMHO.

Anyway, as with many, many, many X-Files episodes, it had plenty of plot holes and glitches to inspire fanfic, and Ginef originally took this on the angst route, before shoving them together on a case to sort things out.

They're in the UK again as they attempt to track down mysterious abductors and killers. In fact, after reading around 20 UK fics to decide which ones I'd post, the UK theme is going to carry over to next week so I hope you're enjoying the change in location.  😀

God Hates a Coward by Shelby Parker

7,500 Words

God Hates a Coward cover

Under unusual circumstances, Scully and Mulder find out that the biggest of leaps start with one small step.

Sorry I'm late. I've had a few server troubleshooting disasters between real life drudgery, but it's still Wednesday, so technically I'm not overdue for the humpday short fic.

This is a Bridesmaid!Scully story from Shelby. She hasn't credited anyone else for the cover so I'm assuming that's her work too. She's rated it R, but I'd probably put it more at a PG-13 level, so it's got both ratings here. I'm too exhausted to write more, so just go read it.

Late Night at the High Noon by Mike Ghost

11,000 Words

Late Night at the High Noon cover

A long night, an empty motel lot in a desert, and music that never stops. Fear is not what always goes bump in the night, or what lies in the shadow behind every tree in an unlit park, or even the hand that reaches below our bed at night. Fear is often personal... close to the heart. Find out what awaits Mulder and Scully at the end of the late night in the High Noon Stay.

This one's a rare treat. The PDF file was painstakingly typeset on 'non-wood paper' by Mike.  Although Mike's rated it higher, it's more implied smut so I've left if at his lower rating.

I finally did some site upgrades this weekend and despite there being an unintended change to most of the book pages it's come through unscathed, which is fortunate because I totally annihilated the test site I tried it out on first. My poor little brain is so overtaxed that there's no way I can make sense of anything else until I've had a good few days' sleep.

Nine Days In February by Rah

14,000 Words

Nine Days in February cover

Ten stories of  nine days over nine years.

Valentines Day from 1994 to 2002. 2002 actually features two stories: "Joy & Happiness" by Rah and "Greener" by Sagan.

These stories came as part of a Valentine's Day special at the long-defunct justduckies.org  in 2002. Rah takes us through the years and the different phases of their relationship, culminating in two stories in 2002, one by Rah and the other by Sagan.

Silver Belles by Revely

5,000 Words

Silver Belles cover

On Christmas Eve, some good samaritans help Scully out of one bind and into another one...

Happy solstice! Time to bring out some Christmas fics.  This is a bit of holiday fluff from Revely.

My Way or the Highway by Rachel Anton

36,000 Words

My Way or the Highway cover

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

Note: Whilst this is an MSR overall, that's not its primary focus. This is dark and dirty... it features a very disillusioned Scully who is looking for reassurance elsewhere when she's not getting it from Mulder. No hearts and flowers here.

You know I like a side of angst, particularly when Mulder's being an ass in early season 6. This story documents an unconventional road trip with both Scully and Krycek feeling a little bitter over their circumstances.

Unexpected Bedfellows by Invisigoth421

7,400 Words

Unexpected Bedfellows cover

Mulder and Scully wake up in bed together… and have no idea how they got there.

A special bonus fic for Mulder's birthday. This is just a silly, fun one, with Moose & Squirrel bickering over the state they found themselves in. I also like an excuse to get Mulder (and Scully) naked... even if it's only in photoshop...

There'll be a smuttier birthday fic for tomorrow's release. If you're one of those people who like to open presents early you can click on the "Mulder's Birthday" tag in the box above and it will display all the birthday stories, including tomorrow's. 🙂

Sin Eater (The) by Jane Mortimer

8,500 Words

Sin Eater cover

Scully disappears into a mysterious vortex and Mulder makes an unbelievable sacrifice.

There is a touch of Dreamland foreshadowing with this evocative, classic MSR fic, written in 1996.  It's only rated PG-13 but still gives quite the mental stimulation. 🙂

Snowed Inn : Winter by Abracadabra

130,000 Words

Snowed Inn cover

Includes "She Wears It Well"

Snowed Inn: First in the Seasons Series. Mulder & Scully travel to a country Inn to help solve a murder. [Teens & Up]

She Wears it Well: Snowed Inn Universe - They're in a close, intimate relationship. A little window-shopping in Boston. You don't have to have read Snowed Inn to 'get' this one.  [Adults only]

.

Mulder and Scully have to investigate a strange case in the snow, whilst coming to terms with their feelings for each other.

They've most certainly come to terms with that in the companion fic, She Wears It Well. Some intense heat, despite the cold weather. 😉

Devil’s Advocate (Neon Universe Vol 2) by ImAStinker & FancyKatz

127,000 Words

Book Cover: Devil's Advocate (Neon Universe Vol 2) by ImAStinker & FancyKatz
Part of the Neon Universe series:

NEON UNIVERSE VOLUME II

Devil's Advocate: After Scully's recovery post-One Breath, Mulder & Scully pose as newlyweds on a Mystery-Solving cruise to catch a serial killer.

Devil's Advocate II: Sanctuary: Escaped prisoners come across Maggie Scully's house where Mulder is recuperating with the Scully family after their cruise adventure.

You Better Sit Down Now: Valentine's day after the drama at Maggie's. (ImAStinker only)

Not to be confused with another story of the same name, these stories feature a Season 2 Mulder and Scully, posing as a married couple on a cruise ship. I had a bit of a cruise ship binge lately, and there's still more to come...

The second fic features the whole Scully family in peril, as Scully takes Mulder there to recover after the first story.

UPDATE: I've now reuploaded this book with a third story that takes place straight after the other two.  I didn't realise that ImAStinker's fics were all part of the one universe, so there's also more before and after this volume.  I'll be re-releasing this one with the other two volumes of the Neon Universe stories.

The cover I originally made for this one didn't survive the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2021 so the attached fics have a new cover with the extra details on.

Taking Liberties (Neon Universe Vol 1) by ImAStinker

89,000 Words

Taking Liberties cover

Taking Liberties: While the X-Files are shut down, Mulder drags Scully to California to celebrate her birthday, but the case he's assigned to keeps getting in the way...

Bokor Holiday: Mulder takes it upon himself to save Scully from a voodoo curse, but ends up needing saving himself.

Code of Silence: Scully tricks Mulder into agreeing to participate in hypnotherapy to help him with his insomnia and some recurring nightmares.

Child's Play: Mulder and Scully are given a young girl to baby-sit. What they weren't told is that she 'witnessed' a murder without actually being there.

Mulder and the Stinking, Rotten, Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: Mulder experiences a definite low.

Forgotten Souls: Our heroes may have gotten in over their heads and need a little 'outside' intervention when some old enemies return. First appearance of Dr.Jay.

When Pigs Fly:
Mulder baby-sits some small relatives, much to his dismay, and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong...

Double Vision: Mulder sees and hears strange things after a near death experience from trying vainly to save a woman's life.

Oh, What A Night: On Halloween, Mulder is drafted to baby-sit some small relatives and his well-meaning efforts to take them trick or treating cause nothing but trouble. Co-written by FancyKatz

On The Edge: Mulder finds comfort from his loss with someone who shares it.  [Warning: Post-ep for "3".  Not essential reading if you prefer to deny that episode never happened.]

Cheryl was a very early MSR fanfic author, with these stories written in 1994. All of her stories take place in the same universe, which begins after Mulder and Scully were split up at the end of Season One.  Consequently there are some characters that developed a little differently in this universe, so you occasionally have to forget all you've learned of them since 1994. She's also quite determined to injure Mulder in multiple ways, which can be a lot of fun.

Annie shows up as co-author for the first time in "Oh, What A Night", and they team up to write more stories in Volume 2 and 3 together.

I did release "Devils Advocate" earlier this year, not realising that the other stories were related, so I'm re-releasing that one this week with an extra story added, along with "Neon" (Volume 3).

The image featured on the cover is a sketch by ImAStinker. I tried colourising it for the cover and it turned out a bit of a mess. The original is below. This is one of the sketches that I'll include with Neon in Volume 3.

Sanctuary by Bardsmaid

400,000 Words

Sanctuary cover

Sanctuary:  On the run from the Smoking Man, Mulder and Scully go undercover in Kentucky, hoping the Beeson-Lymon case will lead them to information that will finally bring CSM down.  Meanwhile, Alex Krycek slowly recovers from a gunshot wound with the help of an unlikely caregiver from whom he can hide nothing.  CSM hatches a nefarious plot to draw Mulder and Scully out into the open.  Help, and resolution, come from unlikely quarters.

This second volume contains part 3 of the Sanctuary series. You absolutely have to read them all in order so grab the first two parts here.

Bardsmaid managed to somewhat redeem Krycek in this one, bestowing some humanity on him without it feeling at all forced.  By the time I got to this one I was all in and didn't even notice how long it was.

This includes the Sanctuary postscripts. As the sequel to Sanctuary was never completed, you may choose to end your journey here, but I strongly recommend that you keep going with Topaz.

BTW, I may have gotten confused with which tags belong on which volumes. I just recently re-read them all in one huge binge and can't remember what happened when...

No Title by The Alexandria Trio

19,000 Words

No Title Cover

Love knows no national boundaries or gender differentiation: Everyone loves Scully.

The Alexandria Trio are Lucy Marchmont, kmom, & bcfan

Some absolute silliness for the end of the July Frenzy of Fanfic. If nothing else it should make you smile.

As I only had a tiny version of the cover for this one, I've taken the liberty of playing with it a little in versions where it's going to be blown up bigger. 🙂

Old Friends by McKab

93,000 Words

Old Friends cover
Part of the Old Friends series:

‘He looked up at her, his expression unreadable. “Ever wonder why things happen?” At Scully’s confused look, he continued, “I mean, why things happen at specific times? Why people show up when they do?” Mulder leaned in toward her as he spoke.’

This was the oldest outstanding story on by  "to read" list as I was a little worried about the Mulder/other factor, but I finally read it and it's definitely MSR. Mulder's ex-girlfriend is in the story, and there's some sexual tension between them, but they're both with other people now. 🙂 I have a feeling that I'd read the interlude, which is Mulder/other, and that gave me the wrong idea. Although the interlude isn't part of the original story,  it was written before Part 21 but I've placed it at the end as an optional extra.

The woman at the centre of this story is a likable, interesting character, who works with Mulder and Scully on a case, before working on their personal relationship.

I haven't managed to get my hands on the original book cover created by Nessa, so if you have a copy I'd love to include it here.

There is a sequel to this one, available under 'series' below the downloads.

Fade In by E Livingstone

27,000 Words

Fade In cover

Giving in to a night of temptation was the easy part... but what happens when the sun comes back up?

The 'other' for Scully isn't anything to worry about. She forgets him so you should be able to as well...

Sometimes, rarely, I have a dustjacket for a story I can't locate. I'd been looking for this fic for a while until finally stumbling across a Palm Pilot edition.  I've managed to convert it to usable formats for us all to enjoy, so please enjoy this fabulous "Mulder and Scully fall apart without each other thanks to meddling Fowley" fic. Whilst our agents sometimes let their heads overrule their hearts, and their silent communication can fail, they know where they belong.

The "X-Libris" download option will take you to the story posted in another section of the site. It's something I'm trialing at the moment. And you get a .docx file instead of a .txt file because I got tired of converting it to different formats. 🙂

Having a Happy X-Mas by Ten

8000 Words

Having a Happy X-Mas cover

Let's continue Christmas morning 1998...

This story continues on from "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas".

I've been convinced that I could probably post another festive fic since one of the fourteen wasn't holiday themed, so here's a short, sweet 1998 post HTGSC fic by a fellow Aussie who hadn't actually seen the episodes yet because we were always months behind the USA.  😀

I've used a collage by Tere for the cover.  Tere was probably the artist who inspired me to experiment a bit more with my own digital art, and she also shared a lot of brushes and textures etc, which are still available from classic.tere-art.com (via the wayback machine).

Year of Election by Paul W

21,000 Words

Year of Election cover

Mulder and Scully run for president... as Republicans. Sadly this was 1996 though. 😉

This is a special fic to distract our American readers from the trauma of the US Presidential election.  It's full of humourous situations as our heroes deal with the ups and downs of politics.  I played this in the car on my long drive to the far north of Australia and did manage to laugh out loud a few times.  It features the best episode of Larry King ever, which sadly never made it to air. 🙁

I've been temporarily distracted by having to offer my services at the Tolga Bat Hospital, but I'll try to update when I can.

The lovely Observer of the Universe has volunteered to come in and fix up some tags and things, which I'm eternally thankful for. Hopefully we can get some new exciting things happening once bat season is dealt with...

All Hallow’s Eve series by Windsinger

192,000 Words

All Hallow's Eve cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

Driving back to Washington on Halloween evening Mulder and Scully see strange lights in the sky over rural Maryland, stop to investigate, and find themselves spending a night they will not soon forget.

This one started out fairly painlessly, but Sue pushed the angst up each year as she added a new volume and sucked us in further.  But wait, there's more! There's also a shorter story called "The Messenger" that works as an epilogue which I'll post separately as it fits into a few of the different universes that Windsinger was writing at the time.  (There's a Cliff's notes guide to all the series involved at the end of that fic so you can follow it without having to read every story. )

Parabiosis by Penumbra

59,000 Words

Book Cover: Parabiosis by Penumbra

Science and Mysticism conjoin. A detailed look at season 7. (Rated R)

This story is supplemented by an NC-17 'addendum to casefile' 'Upsidaisium', which is included.  Upsidaisium is set around Gethsemane which is a bit confusing but smut is smut.

Scully dared herself to give in to this life, to call this enough - dire middle-of-the-nights with this unbelievable parabiosis arcing between them, and the daytime eternities of pretending there was nothing new.

And now when he wanted to lie with her, kissing and talking, she thought of how they would act tomorrow, of the subsequent days until they could be like this again, and she felt a certain level of bitterness at the sham of her life, bitterness he dispelled with his hands and mouth, and with his unspoken assurance that the only certain thing we have is now.

Penumbra really has a way with words. I was really surprised that I had to create a dustjacket for this one because it's such a legendary fic.  There must be one somewhere that I don't know about. I did, however, find this fanart for it by skuuri at deviantart/ankathehuman at tumblr:

Walking Away Series by ScamBeliever

Book Cover: Walking Away Series by ScamBeliever

Walking Away I: Big Mistake: Regretting One Night

Walking Away II: Stolen Shots: Bridging the gap has been painfully trying. Something else makes it even worse.

Walking Away III: Unexpected Visitor: Scully gives in at the wrong time.

Walking Away IV: Passing Torches: Things might never happen.

Walking Away V: Repress, Restrain, Deny: "I won't follow you anymore, Scully. I can't. Not in this." - Mulder

This one opens the morning after their first time together. Scully questions whether changing their relationship was a mistake, before assumptions, jealousy and insecurity take over.

Guardian & Renewal by ImXFScully

30,000 Words

Guardian & Renewal cover

Amy notes: "When I first watched "The Ehrlenmeyer Flask," I was still offline and cut off from other Philes -- in other words, I feared I had just seen the end of one of my favorite shows. I was very disappointed -- as good an episode as that was, I couldn't bear to think of it all ending that way. I thought up my own version of how I would have "liked" to see the show wrap up. Later, of course, I learned that the show would return, and tossed this idea out of my mind. A few weeks ago, though, I decided to put a different spin on it and turn it into this story."

This fic assumes that Mulder left the FBI at the end of Season One. He and Scully do find each other again, before Mulder makes a sacrifice that impacts them all. Angst ensues.

Sounding the Depths Series by ML

Sounding the Depths cover

Sounding the Depths: In which Mulder gets Lesson One in Regaining Your Partner’s Trust. A series of missing scenes from “Agua Mala.”

Interval: Bridging gaps and redefining partnership. A

Do Overs: Continuing work on partnership. A series of missing

The Nature of the Beast: Mulder and Scully continue to work on their partnership in the aftermath of Two Fathers/One Son

ML takes us for an emotional ride from Two Fathers/One Son to Alpha, lovingly exploring the ups and downs of their relationship intertwined with the added emotional toll that came with each case.

Yet again, I found images post-posting. 🙂  These ones were the work of Circe Invidiosa (The Interval image is missing).

Flavours Series by Lilith

18,000 Words

Book Cover: Flavours Series by Lilith

Includes Bitter and Butter Pecan.

Bitter and Butter Pecan and the four-part Flavours follow up reflect Lilith's anger with Mulder after One Son. Scully receives a series of unusual birthday suprises.

Scully’s birthday present was only the beginning. An offer, an acceptance, and a refusal.

Oops, I'm late for Scully's birthday. Never mind, this treat doesn't have a use-by date.

This is another post One Son angst-o-rama, which I have a bit of a penchant for.  With the way Mulder behaved in One Son, I like to give Scully a pass to do whatever the fuck she wants to show Mulder what a stupid jerk he was. 🙂

Having Marita come to Scully is an ingenious plot point that you don't see very often, and it reinforces that Scully doesn't need Mulder. On the other hand, Mulder does need Scully, and the Lone Gunmen are there to help things along .

Scattering Seeds Upon a Stone by J Selby

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

46,000 words

Book Cover: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

Scully and Mulder argue over the Ephesian case and come to a new understanding about their relationship.

This is a bit of an angstfest from Ryo Sen, who keeps us teetering on the edge. The ending is probably a little bit on the sappy side for my taste, but for those into more of a smutfest than an angstfest, I've also posted Jenna Tooms' "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" for you. This one's set after "The Field Where I Died", an ep that needed a little fixing. It's also a reminder that Teena Mulder didn't actually have a name for a very long time meaning authors had to make one up, and Ann, being Samantha's middle name, was a popular choice. Mulder's mother is also rather out of character considering what we knew of her later, so put on your Sarah McLachlan CD and get your mind to shift back to early season 4...

PS There is a character death but it happened in canon too.

I'm getting closer to fixing everything, but there may still be temporary breakages as I'm still doing long-overduebackground stuff. Thanks for being patient.
