Minnesota by WickdZoot

80,000 Words

Minnesota cover

WickdZoot doesn't do summaries, but doesn't care if archivists choose to. With my memory I need them to have some idea as to whether I've read a story before -although this story is plenty memorable without one. 🙂  Mind you, I've borrowed huge chunks of it from Amp & Goo's 'Oklahoma' summary...

It's 1997 and the Minnesota cops have an unsolvable case. Fox Mulder, once golden boy of the VCU, is called in to stop a serial murderer across the state. What he finds drives him to the most frightening of places within his own mind. Despite Scully being there to doctor him, he's eventually forced to make a pivotal choice in his life.

A delightful (& smutty) parody of Amp & Goo's 'Oklahoma', set around Season 4-5ish.

Minnesota, where the snow chills fibbies to the bone
And the killer's clues may sound confused
If you're not familiar with Nash poems.

I love a parody, and WickdZoot gives us a wonderful Profiler!Mulder, teetering on the cusp of madness and not wanting to fall asleep because of the dreams. Admittedly, the dreams really are quite disturbing.

I created a new cover for both 'Oklahoma' and 'Minnesota' when I couldn't make my original 'Minnesota' concept work. However, a week after reuploading the new version of 'Oklahoma' I had another stab at it, and it turned out a lot better. I'm not redoing both, but I'll put it below should you prefer that one, despite (or because of) it not having naked Scully in partial Nun-garb on it. I really hope my ISP doesn't track what images I search for...

MetaRomance by Nascent

All the missing scenes, from s2 through Fight the Future. Canon-friendly reinterpretation.

I love Nascent. A beautifully descriptive exploration with a touch of humour. After their rescue in Antarctica, Mulder reminisces on the past.

Blizzard & Transfers by L C Brown

58,000 Words

Blizzard & Transfers cover

Blizzard: Mulder and Scully are caught in a blizzard in the middle of nowhere without any shelter.

Transfers: Mulder becomes "possessed" and hurts Scully.

!Content Warning applies for "Transfers" - more info below.

This was originally supposed to be a series but unfortunately only two stories were written.  It's a shame because she set up a really interesting scenario that I'd have liked to have seen play out more.

There are lots of the favourite tropes here, despite this being written way back in 1996.  If it helps with considering the content warning in "Transfers", the actions warned about are outside Mulder's control and more of an X-File.

I love stories that don't fit into standard tags, but it makes it hard to entice readers with promises of certain events. I've also left off tags so as not to give things away.

Blackwood I & II by Susan Garrity

15,000 Words

Blackwood cover

An important section of the  (then) upcoming movie, (FTF) from the author’s point of view.

This fic, bestowed with Fight the Future's working title, was written before FTF screened, with a few late additions once "The End" and the movie preview aired. Alas, Mr Carter decided to take them on a slightly different course.

Anther one that didn't fit with the tags. I decided near enough was good enough.

Repressed by Jori

20,000 Words

repressed cover

Includes parts I - IV.

Scully suddenly remembers some long repressed memories and confronts Mulder.

I promised you smut, and Jori has brought it once again.

I loved how she brings forth circumstantial evidence to back up this  story, weaving seemingly insignificant scatterings of canon to bring an extra level of plausibility. She also demonstrates how much they've been affected by what they've experienced in their years together and how it resulted in their attempts to repress their feelings, which just makes the end sweeter.   I'm entirely sold that this happened exactly as Jori describes.

Want and Need cover

Want and Need I & II: Love isn’t always hearts and flowers. Sometimes it’s all about wants and needs.

Remember the first night Scully stayed at Mulder's apartment in Season 7? Something happened that night, and Scully's not entirely thrilled about how things are progressing. This story follows our agents from Sein & Zeit through some important events in Season Seven as they navigate the changes in their relationship.

Khyber Versus Season Seven by Khyber

Khyber Vs Season Seven cover

A series of post-eps and replacement episodes based on a slightly different interpretation of canon. The idea, I hope, is that you could actually watch the S7 episodes I list below in the order I have them, intersperse them with my 'new' episodes and post-eps, and you would have a somewhat different, but still coherent story arc.

There have been some minor changes in order--"Theef" and "First Person Shooter" have swapped, as have "Je Souhaite" and "Hollywood AD." "En Ami," "Chimera," "Fight Club," and "Requiem"* have all disappeared and been replaced with new original episodes.

*These replacement stories never eventuated.

Like any season, there's going to be a few reruns.

Khyber's version of Season Seven:

the sixth extinction
amor fati
hungry
millennium / collapsar
rush
the goldberg variation
orison
the amazing maleeni
signs and wonders
sein und zeit
closure
x-cops
theef / weret-hekau
first person shooter / how gravity works on planet spooky
home from the war (part one) (replaces En Ami)
(rebroadcast S03x02) paper clip / coyote luck
where i end and you begin (part two) (replaces Chimera)
all things
brand x / amnesia
je souhaite / vapor trail
(rebroadcast S03x23) wetwired / poems
hollywood ad / the waterskiers  (includes a reworking of En Ami)
(rebroadcast S06x02) drive / the fall of our summer

Khyber has made a few changes to Season Seven and once again I'm bitterly disappointed that CC & co didn't add a few fanfic authors to their writing team to show them how it's done.  He starts adding to S7 just after Millennium, then lets CC have his way for a while before kicking back in after Theef.  A few old episodes have reruns along the way.

Just a warning that you may feel a little lost at one point but it will all make sense eventually.

Although this series was never completed there are no cliffhangers. The main storylines are wrapped up.

I haven't worked out yet whose artwork is used for the cover, but there was a cover for Weret-hekau on IOHO:

How I Slept With My Partner (Without Really Trying) by JL

110,000 Words

How I Slept With My Partner cover

"How I Slept With My Partner (Without Really Trying)" is just the "secret-header-name" for some notes Jose Chung is gathering for his next fiction novel. He's asked me, Jaime Lyn, to conduct a few interviews for him, as he is sick at home with the flu. All personal accounts contained, herein, are the property of Dana Katherine Scully and Fox William Mulder. The names will be changed, of course, but the accounts will most likely remain intact. This story includes the previously authored "How to Blend in With Normal People".

I quite enjoy a deliberate Mary-Sue. This is a long fic, with a complicated Mulder and Scully and all their baggage interwoven with humour. It does get quite angsty in places.

I know it's hard to believe, but this is actually a season 8/9 fic (sans Doggett & Reyes) in which William exists.  It must be a Christmas miracle.

Two-Column Proof by Jean Helms

6,000 Words

Two Column Proof cover

"What if they've been doing it all along?" asked my faithful friend and beta reader, Lee. What if, indeed ...

I can go along with this premise; I love a story where intimacy starts early.

The cover used is actually a recreation of the original, below. There are a few covers for which only thumbnails have survived so I started challenging myself to re-master them so they can be enjoyed again.  I'm not totally happy with my version, so if anyone has the originals I'll happily replace the images.

My Way or the Highway by Rachel Anton

36,000 Words

My Way or the Highway cover

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

Note: Whilst this is an MSR overall, that's not its primary focus. This is dark and dirty... it features a very disillusioned Scully who is looking for reassurance elsewhere when she's not getting it from Mulder. No hearts and flowers here.

You know I like a side of angst, particularly when Mulder's being an ass in early season 6. This story documents an unconventional road trip with both Scully and Krycek feeling a little bitter over their circumstances.

Sea of Desire & Those Who Love by S Clay

49,000 Words

Sea of Desire & Those Who Love covers

Sea of Desire: At the request of a friend, and former professor, of Mulder's, Scully and Mulder travel to an island community off the coast of Maine to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several infant boys.

Those Who Love: People keep dying at a haunted farm in Connecticut.

More old fics, this time from 1995.  Both stories are quite representative of their season 2 relationship, but the second one would never have made it onto one of CC's story boards. 😉  Also, try not to feel too sad about a future plot point that messes with the first fic.

I blame my ADHD for the 2 covers. I can't read fics without doing something else. I usually get my computer to read them out loud for me and do other stuff as I'm listening.  I just happened to be playing in photoshop as I was listening to these, and each story was about the right time to create a cover, hence there are 2.

Option Three by Khyber

5,900 Words

Option Three cover

Halloween. A little exposed skin, tentative conversation, a bag of candy and a lesson in sharing. Even though Mulder and Scully don't have sexual intercourse, NoRomos will likely want to run screaming right about now.

I couldn't resist another Halloween fic. This is a classic Halloween offering in the stakeout genre, but I'm not sure whether it's a trick or a treat. 🙂 Hopefully it's not too chilly for cold showers at this time of year.

Sorry I did go a bit full pr0n on the cover, possibly due to my own frustrations, but I did try to hide it under lots of twizzlers...

Sleep is Sweeter: Aftermath by M Partous

3,000 Words

Sleep is Sweeter Aftermath cover

Forget Jose Chung, fake alien autopsies and sweet potato pie. The real X-File? What actually happened in the motel room that night…

Author's Note: This is really meant as a tribute to Anne Haynes, whose sonnet series continues to entertain me to no end. "Sleep is Sweeter" is her contribution to the Jose Chung "What-really-happened-in-that-hotel-room-that-night" scene; I felt Chris Carter missed a real opportunity to make fun of us relationshippers by putting them in bed together and, as Paula (AKA Anne) suggests, making what subsequently happened very unclear.

It probably doesn't matter too much about interchanging Paula/Anne's name now, but I still have trouble doing it. Sleep is Sweeter is in the Sonnet Series. You should really read it first. This story takes Sleep is Sweeter and runs wild with it.

Schizophrenic Series by JLB

14,000 Words

Schizophrenic Series cover

SCHIZOPHRENIC: Scully deals with her split personalities, and what it means for she and Mulder.

BREAKDOWN: Tonight we’re different. Mulder will not speak.

TREATMENT: Mulder gives Scully what she wants…

SHATTERED: Was it a mistake?”

JLB was pissy with Mulder after "One Son" at the writing of this series.  As a result, we were blessed with a moody, desperate series of stories, with our heroes seemingly losing themselves and each other.  They take their discontent out on each other sexually while they try to work through their issues.

Everything That Really Matters by Dyann Z

20,000 Words

Everything that Really Matters cover

The passage of time has a way of making everything all right.

Don't be too worried about the Character Death or Scully/Other tags 🙂

Seeing as I'm stuck in Tropical North Queensland for a while, I felt it only fitting that I bring you all along with me. This fic is set about 20km (13mi) south of where I am now. It's actually a tiny little village with about 4 streets, and no actual 'downtown' but obviously fictional liberties have been taken.  I have included a few photos to give you a feel for it. I actually took some more of the beach itself on my last visit here but they were among the ones I accidentally deleted it seems.

Last time I stopped for Fish & Chips there there was a "Recent Crocodile Sighting" warning sign on entry to the beach.  While Scully and William had a nice time on the beach, it's not quite that relaxing when you have to watch out for saltwater crocodiles and cassowaries, and it's also not wise to swim in the water without wearing a stinger-suit because of marine stingers. Typical Australia where everything is out to kill you.  It really is a beautiful part of the world though with tropical rainforest coming right down to glorious white beaches, so I'll allow Dyann her artistic license.
I can see why Mulder would want to live there, although I think he might prefer the remoteness of north of the Daintree River, where I am now, where it's off the grid, and where clothing is just a nuisance half the year when it's pouring with rain and/or the humidity is so high that nothing dries, and there are vast tracts of rainforest between h0uses. 😉 You just have to put up with bad satellite internet 😀
As far as the story goes, it's set after Mulder leaves at the beginning of Season 9 - it goes off into its own dimension shortly afterwards, so the further events of Season 9 and everything that follows have all just ceased to exist. I love fanfic.  Don't worry about the Character Death warning, this is the X-Files  🙂

Playground Series by Fialka

17,000 Words

Playground series cover

Seesaw: All in all, it's been one hell of a year.

Swings & Roundabouts: Between the blanket and the bed, it's anybody's guess...

Sandbox: Balance is a hard thing to keep when the sands continue to shift.

I had hoped to upload a lot more while I've been away on my own, but real life shit is still causing issues. I apologise for the ad-hoc uploads, but it's all I can do right now.

This one's one for the angsty smut lovers. The road to true love never did run smooth, particularly when there's a lack of verbal communication involved.  Fialka takes us through some dark times in Season 7 but eventually brings us out into the light.

Momentary Lapses by DashaK & Plausible Deniability

Momentary Lapses cover

Momentary Lapses (DashaK):  What do mortal sins, fever in the blood, Cuban rum drinks, swollen noses, salty tattoos, and hotel rooms in three states have in common?

Bless me, father, for I have sinned.  I have committed the unpardonable error of sleeping with my partner. On three separate occasions.

Momentary Lapses II: Delirium (Plausible Deniability): Mulder's perspective on the events in "Momentary Lapses".

Momentary Lapses III: Slow (DashaK): Confessions, confessions, plus flying running shoes, lurking nuns, sour cherry muffins, Indian Pudding and slow torture.

Momentary Lapses IV: Good Intentions (Plausible Deniability): Self-recrimination, comfort food, and a resolution.

Momentary Lapses V: Chocolate (DashaK & PD): Sometimes chocolate is a girl's, and a boy's, best friend.

Our favourite agents describe some momentary lapses in control. Some alternating POV from Dasha & PD.

You may have wondered how they fought the intense desire from time to time. Turns out they didn't. 😀

68,000 Words

Nuptiae Sub Rosa cover

A series of canon-compliant missing scenes showing that the dynamic of Mulder and Scully’s relationship may have changed much earlier than previously thought.

Xfmaweezy has been a wonderful friend to me while I've been feeling less than awesome, and she sent me this fic to read when I was struggling with reading anything. I'm so glad she did. It certainly cleared me of the lingering angst I was feeling with the heaviness of the Goshen Universe fics. It's humourous, it's serious, and it's hot as hell as it follows the ups and downs of the Mulder-Scully dynamic from Seasons 4 to 7. I love it so much. Thank you K.

Black Tie Affair by somekindofseizure

20,000 Words

Black Tie Affair cover

Black Tie Affair #1:  Written for a prompt: "If you keep looking at me like that, we're not going to make it to a bed."

Black Tie Affair #2: Mulder and Scully get dressed up once again and play spies as they try to catch some elusive bad guys.

Black Tie Affair #3:  Mulder and Scully continue their roles as Spies.

Black Tie Affair #4: Another assignment, but Scully thinks she's outfoxed Mulder this time.

Black Tie Affair #5: Mulder and Scully go to the South of France while on the job as international spies.

Black Tie Affair #6: Mulder and Scully's international intrigue continues...

Black Tie Affair #7: Mulder and Scully's assignment comes to an end.

Although there are 2 more parts of the Goshen Universe to post, I've had to take a short break from it while I fix some stuff up behind the scenes. It's all available at AO3 anyway.

I felt the need to lighten the mood a little, so I've gone with some smut-humour, or humoritca as I refer to it.  I just adore this series by somekindofseizure. Mulder and Scully are temporarily assigned to "The jewel and art thief rich criminal James Bond Thomas Crown spy ring division" of the FBI, and are arguably the worlds worst spies. In their defense though, they have a lot of distractions to deal with. I'm LMAO just thinking about it.

The main link to AO3 will take you to the series, otherwise each individual story is linked above.

Familiar Heart, A by Mish

A Familiar Heart cover

The Best Years of our Lives meets Magnificent Obsession Mulder and Scully style.  An alternative universe story, set in the 1940s.

This includes the sequel, An Unchanged Soul, which actually brings the word count up to 203,000 words.  This second story is unfinished, so it's up to you whether you embark on the extra 130,000 words knowing that there will be no ultimate resolution.

I don't usually read alternate universe stories, but I started this one without realising and had to keep reading.

This one had enough tension to keep me hooked the whole way. I've included the incomplete sequel. Mish tended to write a lot of stories at the same time, and consequently there are quite a few of hers that were never completed.  I was tossing up whether to include this story here due to the disappointment when I found the sequel wasn't complete, but the original story is worthwhile. You can decide for yourself whether to keep reading.

Whatever it Takes cover

A year after Emily's "death", Scully gets a strange phone call … and must make a decision

Scully decides that she's prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't miss her last chance. I love a strong Scully who decides she's not going to tolerate Mulder's crap and just goes for what she wants. She should know that Mulder's lost without her.

This one actually has some plot to it, and covers a few holidays as Scully determines her own future.

Fugue by RivkaT

Fugue cover

This one's a bit unusual as RivkaT wants you to read the opening scene before you get to read the summary. The only hint before reading is "It's not what you think. At least, I hope not."

Trust me, it's worth reading the first scene to get to the summary.

RivkaT starts this one with our agents hot and heavy.  It does get progressively more angsty as they find themselves in a dangerous predicament.  An excellent fic.  There are some mild dubcon elements if you overthink it, so try not to overthink it.

Scattered Leaves : Fall by Abracadabra

190,000 Words

Scattered Leaves cover
Part of the Seasons series:

Scattered Leaves: This is the third in the Seasons Series; the sequel to Shadows on the Sun. Mulder goes undercover, Scully goes to a conference. Some unanswered questions...

Going Up, Going Down: A smut companion to Scattered Leaves. Yes, I can picture Mulder in almost any setting. And yes, I appreciate his 'backside'.
You do not need to have read the series to read this one.

Outstanding in her Field: A PWP sequel to Going Up/Going Down. Mulder teaches Scully a new game. Not necessary to have read GU/GD, but it helps...

There's still trouble in paradise as Mulder and Scully are sent to Vermont for different reasons.  Mulder is the worst deep undercover agent that the bureau has ever seen as his focus keeps shifting from the job he's there to do. 😀

You might be able to gather from the companion fics included that they do sort out their differences.  This is the final volume of the Seasons Series.

Barely Balancing by Frohike

Barely Balancing cover

No summary provided, so here's my TV Guide version:

The Lone Gunmen help sort out the whole Diana issue and help play cupid, but just as things are finally working out, Scully is plagued by ever-worsening nightmares.

Frohike wanted to give Byers a chance to cut loose, or as she put it "get that steel rod removed from his ass", and this was the result. Byers plays a big part in this X-File, in which Scully is tortured once again.

This is set after the events of One Son, and it's quite satisfying that Scully's concerns are validated. I also confess to a few little chuckles over place names in this story.

Complications Trilogy by Sarah Kiley

308,000 Words

Complications Cover

Complications: After Mulder is in a car accident, Scully continues her investigation in an effort to save him.

Second Chances: Four months after being arrested, Mulder breaks out of prison and seeks Scully's help in clearing his name. To do so, they must make a cross-country trip on the run from the law while Scully has second thoughts about marrying another man. Could this be Mulder and Scully's second chance?

Last Dance: Mulder's messing with something he shouldn't be.

This is an epic early story, beginning in Season 2, so it involves some characters  who never made it far into Season 3.  It's quite a complicated story, to match its name, as it involves time travel and parallel universes, which always make my head spin. It can get quite concerning MSR-wise at points, but you have to trust that they'll find a way.  But I admit to being very glad that an epilogue was added...

All covers are by Sarah.

Another cover for Complications, this one's from the Annex.

Light From Shadows cover

Waking up in a deserted park in the middle of the night, Mulder's mind is a blank. As he and Scully struggle to put the pieces of his memory together, evidence builds into a criminal case against Agent Mulder. While the partners search for the truth, Mulder begins to doubt his own innocence.

(I know, reminiscent of Demons, but too great an episode not to parallel.  This is different in its own right -- trust me.)

!Content Warning: There are quite detailed descriptions of sexual assault by or of Mulder, (depending on the POV).

It's not hard to think of Demons when the story begins, but it soon takes you to a whole 'nother place.  Mulder has a hard time fighting accusations against him, not knowing how much of it's true. But, honestly, either Mulder needed a better lawyer or I watch too many true crime shows. 😉

It was supposed to be a simple investigation of a serial killer... until the mind of the killer was made known. Mulder struggles against truths and lies in the mind of a murderer, while Scully fights against shadows and conspiracies for the sanity of her partner.

Content Warning: Profiler!Mulder is violent towards Scully a number of times in this story.

Tara writes beautifully, so at least while she's putting you through an emotional wringer you can appreciate that she's doing it with such vivid imagery.  😉  This is one for the angst addicts. Be prepared to hurt for a while.

I'd been looking for this fic for a while until finally stumbling across a Palm Pilot edition.  I've managed to convert it to usable formats for us all to enjoy, so please enjoy this fabulous "Mulder and Scully fall apart without each other thanks to meddling Fowley" fic. Whilst our agents sometimes let their heads overrule their hearts, and their silent communication can fail, they know where they belong.

The "X-Libris" download option will take you to the story posted in another section of the site. It's something I'm trialing at the moment. And you get a .docx file instead of a .txt file because I got tired of converting it to different formats. 🙂

 • Said the Spider to the Fly: The truth about Samantha Mulder. Or: Nascent develops her split personality.
 • From Ass to Zebra: Okay. So what if, like, Vince Gilligan was me, and I was Vince? I am he, and he is me, and we are all together! Step aside, Vinzeno. Let D.N. show you how it's DONE.
 • Cockfighting: Guess
 • Swine of the Prodigal Son: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday's gonna be all right.
 • Cattle Chutes:  You remember that game "Chutes and Ladders?" If not, you're old. I bet Mulder and Scully play really well.
 • EIEIO: The truth is out there.

!Content Warning: Character deaths - everyone dies, often more than once, in multiple ways, but it is humour.  There's also slash in "Cockfighting", but nothing graphic.

Have you ever wanted to be immunised against the anguish of character death? Well this is the series for you.

Nascent's evil side takes over and she goes on a rampage of character death, in a multitude of imaginative ways.  Both beloved and detested characters suffer at the hands of Dark Nascent, and I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times.

Nascent breaks all the fanfic rules with this series, but she pulls it off magnificently.

Complicated: Things like this happen to other people. they don't happen to Dana Scully.

Dust Out the Demons: Elton solves all ills

Part of the Evils Universe series:

Mulder thought that no one could ever want Scully as much as he did. He was dead wrong.

The two stories in this universe were written by Syntax6 under her earlier alias.  As excited as I am to post these fics, it doesn't come close to the excitement I'm feeling at being given permission to post a number of Syntax6's stories.  Stay tuned.

If, like me, you can't get enough of Syntax6's writing, she's just released her 4th novel.  I don't want to give details here, where her "legit" writing can be associated with her fanfic, but if you love the way she manages to pull twists out of nowhere, you'll want to follow this link to her webpage for more information.

Compass by Nascent

52,000 Words

Compass Cover

How Scully and Mulder got their groove back after One Son.

I don't know how I managed to upload the wrong version of the text file, but it's fixed now. 🙂

This is a beautifully crafted case file set after One Son, with all the angsty fallout of agents who'd been bed-mates in this fic since season 4 but never actually confessed their deep abiding love in that time. Diana is still doing her thing and Mulder still trusts her, leading to an annoyed Scully having to set him straight.

"So this was talking. They’d never tried it before. He didn’t think he liked it much."

The x-file itself is one that I couldn't for the life of me work out how they were going to get out of it, but Nascent got us all through it.

Intrigues in the Dark by FragileVixen

47,000 Words

Intrigues in the Dark cover

A string of suicides leads Mulder and Scully to a sleepy, coastal town in Oregon for the second time—on their return to The X File—as tensions run high and nothing is as it seems.

As evidence that 2020 wasn't all bad, I present this contemporary classic casefic written by FragileVixen for the recent case file fic exchange.  A bonus fic (link only) to help get you through the weekend.

FragileVixen has also started making collages to post with some of her stories on AO3. This is the image she put together for this one:

Lost Series, The by Wintersong

204,000 Words

Lost series cover

The Lost: Mulder and Scully are trapped in the remote wilderness and the art of surviving was not what they expected.

The Found: In the midst of an explosively escalating serial arson case, Mulder and Scully must come to terms with the changes that six months in the wilderness have wrought in themselves and those around them.

Alphas: Mulder, Scully and the rest of the X-Files Division struggle with new realities and the changing of old relationships when the reopening of a closed murder investigation draws them into a shadowy culture thousands of years old.

This starts with an unforgettable story of Scully and Mulder's survival in the woods having been taken there by a perp.  Scully's strength and ingenuity keeps them alive before they're ultimately reunited with civilisation.  Once they return they're forced to San Diego to help with a case involving Scully's brother.   Then finally they have to face themselves and each other.

All Hallow’s Eve series by Windsinger

192,000 Words

All Hallow's Eve cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

Driving back to Washington on Halloween evening Mulder and Scully see strange lights in the sky over rural Maryland, stop to investigate, and find themselves spending a night they will not soon forget.

This one started out fairly painlessly, but Sue pushed the angst up each year as she added a new volume and sucked us in further.  But wait, there's more! There's also a shorter story called "The Messenger" that works as an epilogue which I'll post separately as it fits into a few of the different universes that Windsinger was writing at the time.  (There's a Cliff's notes guide to all the series involved at the end of that fic so you can follow it without having to read every story. )

Queen’s Gambit by Suzanne Schramm

37,000 Words

Queen's Gambit cover

Queen’s Gambit: A chess strategy in which a player sacrifices key pieces in order to win.

Another fic set during the uncomfortable Kersh era in Season 6, with some juicy relationship angst.

Ordinary series cover

One Ordinary Day: One ordinary day, with fortune cookies.

Out of the Ordinary: Mulder and Scully continue to explore the relationship started in One Ordinary Day.

Ordinary People: Sometimes love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship.

No case in sight in this one. I realised I've been uploading lots of case stories lately. 🙂

Never for You by LMControl

Never for You cover

Living, loving……. and learning to let go. Set in the future, post episodic series finale, the X-Files are closed permanently due to unforeseen circumstances. Facing the dissolution of the partnership, Mulder and Scully go their separate ways trying to find a future, unable to see past their history. All the while, evil forces surround them in Washington that threaten the very existence of our nation’s most prized possession….democracy.

LM Control emphasizes the slow in slow burn in this one.  While there are tags for /others they try but there's no follow through IYKWIM.   There are case files in case files as M&S deal with the closure of the X-Files.

Ariadne Thread, The by Wen

30,000 Words

Ariadne Thread cover

A story of personal demons and the dust of angels. Can Scully help Mulder find his way out of the labyrinth?

Wen can hit Mulder and Scully where it really hurts.

She was also a dustjacket artiste, but very few of hers can be found now. 🙁

You He Did Not Fail by Extraordinarily_ordinary

85,000 Words

You He Did Not Fail cover

Five months after recovering from cancer, Scully abruptly left Washington — and Mulder — for a position at the LA field office. Mulder never understood why. Two years later, he'll have his chance to find out.

This is a fabulous brand new fic by a first time author. It combines a case file with some intense relationship angst and some likeable (and loathable) original characters.

There is some artwork at the end of the fic on AO3 but I won't post it here because it might be a bit spoilery. 🙂

Darkness and the Light by Humbuggie

37,000 Words

Book Cover: Darkness and the Light by Humbuggie

After involvement with another man and an argument with Mulder, Scully goes her own way. But when Mulder finds out the real reason behind her move and goes after her, he threatens to become the victim of what was meant to happen to her.

Separation anxiety, then MulderTorture. You'll have to use your own imagination when it comes to smut.

Idylls by Bugs

8,500 Words

Book Cover: Idylls by Bugs

It all seems to be over, but the Smoking Man has information that will change how Scully sees herself.

*epub version should be working*

I'm not a huge fan of the chaos of post-col fics, but This one's an unusual one in that the aliens came and went and things are back to 'normal'. It's difficult to categorize. I've added a few tags but left off a few as well to keep the intrigue.

Tremors & Aftershocks by Gerry Hill

19,000 Words

Book Cover: Tremors & Aftershocks by Gerry Hill

Scully and Mulder not only face a monster of a killer, but, even more horrible, must confront their own relationship.

This is another fic that came to mind for buried alive stories (see 34 Hours). In this one they're not deliberately buried though.  So much glorious angst. And pissy, jealous Scully gives me life. 😀

That Night Series by EBE

35,000 Words

That night series cover
 • Part I: Sex
 • Part II: More sex
 • Part III: They decide to open up emotionally
 • Part IV: Even more sex
 • Part V: Mulder ditches, Scully threatens to split
 • Part VI: Mulder ditches, Scully splits
 • Part VII: Reconciliation

Those summaries don't do this fic justice. This began as a bit of a first-time smut vignette but it then runs the gamut of emotions as it explores the establishment of their relationship with its ups and downs. It's one of those favourite fics that I forgot was a favourite until I re-read it.

It's weird how when re-reading fics I've found that some memorable ones haven't had the same impact on a second read, and others I couldn't quite remember have me pleasantly surprised.  That could be a lot to do with expectations, so I try not to let that affect what I post here.  🙂

Parabiosis by Penumbra

59,000 Words

Book Cover: Parabiosis by Penumbra

Science and Mysticism conjoin. A detailed look at season 7. (Rated R)

This story is supplemented by an NC-17 'addendum to casefile' 'Upsidaisium', which is included.  Upsidaisium is set around Gethsemane which is a bit confusing but smut is smut.

Scully dared herself to give in to this life, to call this enough - dire middle-of-the-nights with this unbelievable parabiosis arcing between them, and the daytime eternities of pretending there was nothing new.

And now when he wanted to lie with her, kissing and talking, she thought of how they would act tomorrow, of the subsequent days until they could be like this again, and she felt a certain level of bitterness at the sham of her life, bitterness he dispelled with his hands and mouth, and with his unspoken assurance that the only certain thing we have is now.

Penumbra really has a way with words. I was really surprised that I had to create a dustjacket for this one because it's such a legendary fic.  There must be one somewhere that I don't know about. I did, however, find this fanart for it by skuuri at deviantart/ankathehuman at tumblr:

Untitled Random Casefile #4664 by JessM

7,000 Words

Book Cover: Untitled Random Casefile #4664 by JessM

Mulder and Scully set out to solve a case. The Author tags along. Literally.

This fic makes me want to proposition Jess too... if only I didn't have to compete with Mulder and Scully to do so.  I love this, in the same way that I love it when the show makes fun of itself.   Jess bravely Mary-Sue's herself in order to visit Moose & Squirrel off-season and discovers that their off-screen personas are exactly as we imagine...

Walking Away II: Stolen Shots: Bridging the gap has been painfully trying. Something else makes it even worse.

Walking Away IV: Passing Torches: Things might never happen.

Walking Away V: Repress, Restrain, Deny: "I won't follow you anymore, Scully. I can't. Not in this." - Mulder

This one opens the morning after their first time together. Scully questions whether changing their relationship was a mistake, before assumptions, jealousy and insecurity take over.

Oh the angst. What's a girl to do when her new lover decides to push her away to save her from himself? Go to Hawaii and setlle, that's what. But is that what she really wants?  Maybe, maybe not.  Spoiler: the answer isn't yes.

Well colour me surprised. I thought I'd uploaded this one ages ago.

There was a cover for this one by Kimpa, but only the thumbnail remains, which I've quadrupled in size here so you can see it.  I wish images saved better on the wayback machine. 🙁

29,000 Words

Book Cover: Up In Your Arms by Admiralty

Post-Closure, Mulder's search for his long-lost sister has finally come to an end. What does this mean for his relationship with Scully? And where do they go from here?

I was inspired by Echo & the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" compilation album cover when creating a dustjacket for this Killing Moon inspired fic. I'm a big fan of Admiralty's writing, and this angsty season 7 fic with its clever use of canon got my proverbial juices flowing.

Remember Me? by Caroline O

56,000 Words

Book Cover: Remember Me? by Caroline O

Mulder and Scully have been forcibly separated from each other for fifteen months. Scully has a new life, but no knowledge of her previous one.

Happy Mother's Day to mothers of all descriptions. A bonus fic for the occasion: this fic is one that's even enjoyable for those of us who don't do kidfic.  Scully has a baby, and a partner, but it's not all as it seems. There are many twists and turns to keep you reading.

Mulder has a very, very good dream. Or does he?

A glimpse into what Mulder was up to during 'all things'.  This one is absolutely impossible to tag, but it's only a short one, so go on and read it.

I wanted to post a Beltane fic for Beltane, so this was the obvious choice. I'm limited to providing the original web link only in accordance with Pru's wishes, but fortunately the story is in a single text file, so you can print it from your browser in PDF format [Ctrl+P], or use a plugin like EpubPress for chrome/firefox. It just dawned on me that I don't download anything using my phone so I have no idea how to do that...

Whole Truth (The) by Admiralty

95,000 Words

Whole Truth cover

Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley, a partnership of like minds. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, a partnership of perfect opposites. A journey beginning pre-XF and throughout the series exploring these relationships. (Includes Mulder, Diana, and Scully POVs)

Chaps 1-5: pre XF- Pilot
Chap 6: S2-S5
Chap 7: The End
Chap 8-9: Fight the Future/ The Beginning
Chap 10: Drive/ Triangle
Chap 11-12: Two Fathers/ One Son
Chap 13: Arcadia-Field Trip
Chap 14-17: Biogenesis arc

Although this fic examines the Mulder/Fowley relationship, it is MSR. It gives a lot of insight into the behaviour we see on screen, and adds so much depth to all of these characters.  Admiralty  even made Diana almost actually likeable. Or appreciable anyway.  It gives a whole new understanding of the motivations and events of seasons 5 to 7.

Do Overs: Continuing work on partnership. A series of missing

The Nature of the Beast: Mulder and Scully continue to work on their partnership in the aftermath of Two Fathers/One Son

ML takes us for an emotional ride from Two Fathers/One Son to Alpha, lovingly exploring the ups and downs of their relationship intertwined with the added emotional toll that came with each case.

Yet again, I found images post-posting. 🙂  These ones were the work of Circe Invidiosa (The Interval image is missing).

Human Credentials by Scarlet Baldy

73,000 Words

Book Cover: Human Credentials by Scarlet Baldy

As both agents decide to forget what almost happened in that hallway, Scully tries to deal with a clinical depression which was just waiting to happen. The fact that Mulder resumed his relationship with Fowley is not helping. A mysterious letter sends him on another wild goose chase in a country far far away. Scully and Fowley ‘try’ to temper their mutual animosity to find him. The agents will find out that travelling can be a mind altering experience, in the true sense of the word.

This story begins right after the movie and gradually evolves into its own alternate universe. A.D Kersh never existed, the Consortium didn’t turn to ashes, and Fowley never worked - or slept - with CSM.

Book II - Lendemains
This is the morning after Human Credentials' last book ended. Mulder, Scully and her clone Faye are on the run. The world is being ravaged by a mysterious and lethal virus. And the bees are back.  NOTE: THIS STORY IS INCOMPLETE BUT INCLUDED HERE FOR THE CURIOUS.  There are only 5 chapters so it barely begins, unfortunately. You might be able to consider it an epilogue. 🙂

I only have one cover for this one, but I have the thumbnails for the rest.  The HC1 front and back cover are by Pinky and the HC2 front and back cover are by Invisigoth.

Flavours Series by Lilith

18,000 Words

Book Cover: Flavours Series by Lilith

Includes Bitter and Butter Pecan.

Bitter and Butter Pecan and the four-part Flavours follow up reflect Lilith's anger with Mulder after One Son. Scully receives a series of unusual birthday suprises.

Scully’s birthday present was only the beginning. An offer, an acceptance, and a refusal.

Oops, I'm late for Scully's birthday. Never mind, this treat doesn't have a use-by date.

This is another post One Son angst-o-rama, which I have a bit of a penchant for.  With the way Mulder behaved in One Son, I like to give Scully a pass to do whatever the fuck she wants to show Mulder what a stupid jerk he was. 🙂

Having Marita come to Scully is an ingenious plot point that you don't see very often, and it reinforces that Scully doesn't need Mulder. On the other hand, Mulder does need Scully, and the Lone Gunmen are there to help things along .

Unbelief Series by Anne Milne

19,000 Words

Book Cover: Unbelief Series by Anne Milne

How Scully reacts to being ditched in the middle of a nasty case, and the consequences of said ditching.

I love a good Mulder-bashing after he ditches Scully to run off somewhere with Diana Fowley.  Mulder suffers the consequences in this one, in a way that I find quite satisfying (despite the lack of smut) 😉

Drugstore Jesus by Agent Rain

24,000 Words

Book Cover: Drugstore Jesus by Agent Rain

Mulder recalls the events of the most painful encounter of his life from a few months ago on the way towards possible salvation from it.

This one tugs at the heartstrings. Mulder and Scully are a couple, until he pushes her away for her own good. Of course it doesn't do anyone any good.

Once again I've found an author's artwork long after posting... these images were all made by Agent Rain.

Legacy, A by DLynn

37,000 words

Book Cover: Legacy, A by DLynn

Through a series of diaries, Mulder and Scully’s granddaughter discovers a legacy rich with love and sacrifice. BTW, Mulder and Scully do play a prominant role in this story.

This one was a recommendation that I've had on my "to read" list forever but haven't read yet.  I'm doing a bit of a guess on some of the tags.

This was a really difficult one to format as the original text formatting didn't transfer well.  I've done my best to get the others as close as I can to the .txt file, but if you're a cheater like me who has an e-reader read books to you out loud, you might have to remove the line breaks yourself.  I've gone for presentation above the voice-bot's readability because I don't think anyone else is crazy enough to have a screen-reader (aka porn-bot) read stories to them while they're at the supermarket.

Three Times Series by Joann Humby

Three Times: Overture
Scully's missing, having left home with CSM. When she returns, emotions are running high. Post En Ami. Mulder's POV.

Three Times: Overture Mirrored

"Three Times - Overture"

Three Times: Restart
After a sexual misadventure in the aftermath of En Ami - Mulder and Scully still haven't talked about what happened. Mulder returns from his trip to England to find Scully considering fate.

I love Mulder's angst-level at the end of En Ami, so I love a good post-En Ami fic.

Miles to Go Series by MD1016

Preponderance by Alanna

Book Cover: Preponderance by Alanna

Preponderance (Books 1 & II)

Guilt is painted in shades of grey. When Scully is involved in a serious crime, how will Mulder react?

Flights of Fancy by Pebbles

Flights of Fancy cover

Flights of Fancy Series, includes:

Fancy Dance : PG-13 :  Scully faces another Valentine's Day alone - until she gets her Irish up.

Fancy Footwork : NC-17 : The morning after the night before as last seen in "Fancy Dance"

Fancy Three: PG-13 : Season Six, a little later on the morning after the night before seen in "Fancy Dance" and "Fancy Footwork"

Tickled Fancy: NC-17 : Season Six, after the events of Milagro

Fancy Toppings : R

Midsummer Night's Fancy : R

Fancy Harvest :  PG-13

Fancy Fall:  PG-13 - um, okay, R - but I still maintain this is not smut. No matter what Ropo says. 😉

Fancy Foreplay :  Robbie *made* me rate this NC-17; no bad language, tho. Still say it ain't smut.

Fancy Haunts :  NC-17. But *I* wouldn't call it smut.

Fancy Phone : R for racy language, implied smut : Set sometime in Season Seven, obviously pre-Requiem :  extra fic, not in Collector's Edition from the annex.

My head is in full on anxiety mode and I can't quite remember what happens in this one.  All I remember is that I was pleasantly surprised by this fic, and I've given it the following tags: ^, >, 1, 1>, Bch, CabW, P°, Pg, Sinit.  They might not mean much to you, but they tell me that they go to a forest, Scully runs out, there's first time sex, someone has regret after the first time, there's a beach, a cabin in the woods and outdoor sex, not necessarily in that order. Also, someone gets pregnant (probably not Mulder) and Scully initiates the romance.  I did enjoy it and it was hailed as one of Fred and Ginger's Smut Classics, so I hope you enjoy it regardless of my inability to remember what actually happens in it.

Mulder Dream Series by xgirl

Book Cover: Mulder Dream Series by xgirl

The final pieces of xgirl's Crossing Lines universe.  Note, if you want to think they lived happily ever after at the end of Healing Waters, you might want to reconsider reading this.  It's a bit of a rollercoaster, but it does end up in a good place.  Xgirl does give Mulder his sister back, but it comes at a price.

Xgirl notes:

All Our Yesterdays takes place after Mulder's abduction in Requiem and the premise is that he is having these visions from his past. The first mini story is a "prickly" encounter in the immediate aftermath of The End, when emotions are raw from the fire and from the circumstances surrounding the x-files division. It is the end of that famous run during S5 in which I interpreted much chaos in their relationship, all of it unvoiced at the time. It is the part of the story that provides the requisite angst.
The second encounter is from far more innocent days: Mulder and Scully's first Christmas as partners. No ghosts or mystery gift giving here, just some early UST.
The third part is a continuation of The Unnatural. Didn't you wonder what else was said after "Shut up, Mulder, I'm playing baseball"?

The Sum of My Tomorrows
Is our present defined by our future? This story was dedicated to Mulder, who deserved better than he got in Closure.  As he lies in a state of suspended animation, Mulder gets a vision of a future that involves Samantha.  The relationship in this story is given as "MS friendship post-MSR".  This story is a direct continuation of All Our Yesterdays.  Mulder is still "wherever" he is after being taken at the end of S7.

My headcanon may differ from Xgirl at this part of Crossing Lines, but I'm much happier with her resolution of Mulder's ultimate truth than the crap we were served onscreen.  I'm yet  to find my post S7 headcanon in a story...

Healing Waters Series by xgirl

56,000 Words

Book Cover: Healing Waters Series by xgirl
Part of the Crossing Lines series:

XGirl continues the Crossing Lines universe, taking Mulder and Scully from after Sixth Extinction through most of Season 7 with angst and love.  There are two R rated stories in this section - if you want to skip the smut, XGirl has PG rated versions on her website.

I: Truths Untold: In the dark hours before the early morning, the greatest truths out there may well be the unspoken ones. [PG]
II: Reconnection: A day at the beach and a story about a boy and his sandcastle spaceship. [PG]
III: Acceptance: Mulder and Scully take a significant personal step forward after a severe blow to his psyche. (Sein und Seit/Closure) [R]
IV: Just Breathe: Scully finds it difficult to deal with a side of Mulder she's never seen before in the aftermath of her adventure with CSM (En Ami). [PG]
V: Truths Revealed: Mulder and Scully realize that they have to deal with the memory of Diana if they want to move ahead. (all things) [PG]
VI: Waters Edge: The end of the road finally arrives for Mulder and Scully.[R]

XGirl's thoughts on the Post-Fight the Future X-Files (and even post Redux) very much mirror my own. It lost momentum. It tried to crush the Mulder-Scully dynamic, before going on to crush their spirits and change their beliefs.  Her website, xgirl's x-files x-perience, has an analysis of each episode, both on the original watch and a rewatch on the 20th anniversary. The Crossing Lines universe is her attempt to fix up some of the wrongs in Seasons 6 and 7.

Part of the Crossing Lines series:
xgirl's introduction to the Crossing Lines universe:

(For a Glimpse of "What Could Have Been")

For those of you unfamiliar with my work, all of my stories take place in what has become known as the "Crossing Lines" universe. It was the name of my first fanfic, an "unplanned" effort that ended up paving the path for my version of Mulder and Scully following their 1998 big screen adventure.

This first set of stories — beginning with Crossing Lines and ending with Two Steps Back — essentially take place during the TV series' sixth season.  It continues in the Healing Waters series.

CROSSING LINES: Released March 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Fight the Future — Our favorite long suffering couple deal with their continuing and changing relationship after the "events in the hallway" and finally acknowledge the existence of the "L" word. Along the way, they establish closure on some important issues of the past year, including Mulder's unresolved guilt over Scully's illness.

WHEN: Released September 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for Fight the Future — Scully and Mulder each reflect on an eye-opening night of discussion.

REPARATION: Released March 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for One Son — After being a big-time jerk to Scully, Mulder must make amends.

IN MY LIFE: Released April 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Arcadia — Mulder celebrates life with Scully on a very special day.

SOUL ON SOUL: Released July 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Field Trip — In the immortal words of Eddie Van Blundht, "What's stopping us?"

TWO STEPS BACK: Released August 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for Rain King — The strange wackiness of the Rain King encounter takes a serious turn when Mulder and Scully are faced with revisiting an old fear.

You know you’d have accepted the bet too. Admit it.

The title doesn't do this fic any favours.  This one has more plot than porn, with a PG-13 rating for the first part which only makes it to an R in the second story.  But I think it's an interesting and vaguely plausible scenario they put themselves into, and the thought of sex up against a palm tree on the beach is one I'm happy to entertain.

Revanche (noun) political policy designed to recover lost territory or status.

This is a Scully-centric mytharc fic.  I love the 'Scully goes out alone to prove that Fowley is a traitor' genre. Even when no smut is involved. Go Scully!  🙂

Continuity Series I & II by Alelou

I: A look at season 7 from all things onwards in light of the revelations in Within.

II - Per Manum Fractorum: Missing dialogue that would have explained
much that is puzzling in Per Manum.

Finally a G-rated fic!  This is very funny.  Alelou fills in some missing scenes  to make more sense of Season 8.  We could really have used Alelou's help with more than just Season 8 storylines.

As much as I liked how the two covers Tre made had very little continuity in themselves, I couldn't help but try to use a background and overlay to fill in some missing pieces myself to bring the two images together. These are the originals.

Cellphone by Marasmus

A conversation. A game. All is not what it seems.

This is one of those fics that sticks in your mind long after reading it. It's widely recommended and received a couple of mentions in the 2000 Spooky Awards.

This fic can be found on a number of recommendation pages.  These are a couple of other illustrations I've managed to collect for it.

Fidelity by Suzanne Schramm

Book Cover: Fidelity by Suzanne Schramm

A Scully ditch provides the opportunity to get some real answers in the quest for the truth.  Takes place right after Two Fathers/One Son.

I puffy heart this story so much.  It fulfills my post-One Son need for Mulder to have to suffer for his treatment of Scully in that episode (even if it's Scully who's feeling most of the pain). I can be rather masochistic in my enjoyment of the pain of the rift caused by Mulder's unwillingness to believe that Fowley would betray him.  I'm like a mutant who feeds off the intense Mulder-Scully feels, and this story has plenty of calories to burn off.

This House is Burning by Tesla

Book Cover: This House is Burning by Tesla

Includes:

 • THiB: Blood on the Snow
 • THiB II: A Thief's Diet
 • THiB III: The Quiet Glades of Eden [Incluing prologue: There is only me in my bedroom]

Mulder and Scully are assigned to track a serial killer. They go undercover at a ski resort in Colorado with two other agents, and tension ensues. Set early in canon.

I assume the images are from Tesla as nobody else is credited on her website as having made them.  Along with the cover image, the following images were posted on each Book's page:

Making it Personal by Brandon D Ray

50,000 words

A series of episode-based vignettes, covering the second half of Season 6 and tracing the evolution of Mulder & Scully's relationship during that time.

Brandon follows the canon of Season 6, particularly One Son to Biogenesis, giving it his own twist.

There are two other dustjackets I've uncovered of stories included in this series.

Worth Breaking by Narida Law

90,000 words

Book Cover: Worth Breaking by Narida Law

Mulder and Scully embark on a relationship neither is able to handle, and the question of what is or isn’t worth breaking must be answered.

The delicious angst of Mulder and Scully deluding themselves into believing they can have just a physical relationship and their obliviousness to the others' feelings...

I'm not sure of the artist who made the main dustjacket above.  Nerida only credited the artists of the two below, so it may have been made by her.  The one on the left, below, is by Kimpa.  Trixie made the one on the right. Unfortunately the original no longer exists, only a thumbnail (which is smaller than an actual thumbnail), however Trixie's description below might let you imagine it better 🙂

Trixie's explanations for the various images depicted in her cover:
THE MAIN IMAGE: Um...duh.
THE TEXT: A portion of Mulder's journal entry from Chapter Seven.
MULDER AND SCULLY, FAR LEFT: Mulder and Scully, all twitchy in Skinner's office in Chapter Eight.
MULDER IN SUIT: Just because he looks damn good.
SCULLY IN DRESS: The dress Scully wears for Mulder in Chapter Twelve.
MULDER AND SCULLY, FAR RIGHT: "Ladies room. Two minutes," Mulder says to Scully. Found in Chapter Eight.

No Quarter Given: Abstinence, Greed, Surrender & Truce Combined

She wants to feel alive. Post Never Again and onwards. Serious angst.

All available parts of the story have been combined. Warning: This series was not completed, but what's available ends in a satisfactory way.  Actually, I wasn't even aware that there were more parts than the widely available trilogy until the lovely Marina Frenzy pointed out there was an incomplete part 4.  Part 4 is only available on Mish's old personal page via the wayback machine.

Cubed by Louise Marin

37,000 words

Book Cover: Cubed by Louise Marin

Scully does a little body-swapping of her own. Can she and Mulder make it back to each other? Do they want to?

Author's Note: This story takes place around the middle of season six, but splits off into its own universe sometime before the events of Two Fathers.

I found a second dustjacket for this one at annex-files.com

Annex cover - artist unknown. There looks like a signature but I can't identify it. 🙁
