Cost Analysis by Suzanne Schramm

Cost Analysis cover

Mulder tells Scully to go home but she's still out in the field the next day. At what point did she tell him "No way, Jose. I stay"?

A missing part of the Requiem conversation in the bed.

By far the shortest story I've posted here, but I love the cover art. I'm not sure who created it, but I picked it up from Suzanne's section of alanna.net.

Cunegund’s Restoration by LiviaB

39,000 Words

Cunegund's Restoration cover

Despite the "hard news" angle taken by his correspondent Christiane Amanpour, CNN Washington Bureau Chief Frank Sesno finally got to the point and asked the question everybody had been silently asking themselves. "So, Agent Mulder, how did the spacecraft handle?"

A Post-Requiem Mulder-Returns-in-the-happiest-possible-way fic.

After the comparative angst of Livia's "Hem Ben Ik" I thought you might like a happy ending story.  This has to bring a smile to your face, and it's surprisingly light on sap as Livia ties up more loose endings than CC did in 11 Seasons and 2 movies. 🙂

When no one is who they seem to be, whom do you trust?

Hot Damn is right. I don't remember coming across this fic before; I only went searching for it after I found a dustjacket for it and was intrigued. I'm glad I found it. I had no idea where it was coming from or heading to, and it totally really blew me sideways. Plus the flashback was one of the hottest "all things" fics I've ever read.

I'm disappointed that I found no more of this would-be series, but even the note at the end that there was more planned was enough to allow me to smile, knowing it wasn't supposed to be the end of the story.

The dustjacket is from Livia's website so I'm assuming it's her art. Sorry if I butchered it a little in my compulsion to force all the cover art into a 3:4 ratio...

Wildwash Series by OKayVal

Wildwash cover
  1. Wildwash:  Leaving the past behind...
  2. Wild Wild Mulder: Sequel to "Wildwash." A conversation about cowboys gives Mulder an idea.
  3. Bareback: Sequel to "Wild Wild Mulder." Mulder makes amends, as only he can.
  4. Sleep Becomes Him: Follow-up to "Bareback." The morning after.

Mulder in chaps. Need I say more? This series begins the day after M&S did the wild thing for the first time, post-Closure.

Donnilee made dustjackets for all 4 stories:

Puppets Trilogy by M Partous

54,000 Words

Puppets Trilogy cover

Mulder, driven by a need to understand what really happened to his father, decides to head back to the silo (Piper Maru/Apocrypha) to find Alex Krycek, who he's convinced he heard crying out when he and Scully were there.

!CW: consent is freely given, but under circumstances that could be considered duress.

As stated in the author's notes, her wish was to explore the M/S relationship in a way that it "gives them a kind of mystical strength, one that frightens the powers that be, one that could actually help them in their quest for the truth"

Whilst their first time is under less than perfect circumstances, it connects them in a special way that continues through the challenges they face in the rest of the stories. I do have a special love for an early connection between our agents, and this one feels right for them.

Picks up from Biogenesis and tells the story of a long and perilous journey—both inner and outer. All good journeys begin with clarity.

After realising how much smut I'd put in my July Fic Frenzy I'm trying to end with some smut-free fic.  This is ringfic, with Fowley as Mulder's ex-wife. Scully rescues Mulder from the hospital post-Biogenesis before going to a hideout where Mulder details his life after Samantha and before Scully.

Part of the Old Friends series:

A continuation of Requiem. Mulder is abducted and Scully receives some incredible news... naturally she reaches out to some friends for support.

Scully teams up with people she can trust, Susan and Michael who were introduced in "Old Friends". It's much nicer to think that Scully had people to support her during Mulder's absence.

Vox Series by Catwoman

17,000 Words

Vox sereis cover

Vox: This story’s been running around in my head since I first saw ‘All Souls’, and when I watched it again tonight I knew I had to write this down. See, as with many of this seasons angst-infested episodes, ‘All Souls’ made me feel physically sick, just because of the general unfairness of it all. We know from the episode that the events in the episode also made Scully sick, emotionally if nothing else. I would guess that Scully was haunted by the events of the episode, and will continue to be haunted by them, for quite some time afterward. Well, I think it’s about time Mulder sees what losing Emily has done to Scully, and what he’s doing to aggravate the hurt.

Wait: Nobody ever forgets where a hatchet is buried. Sequel to ‘Vox’.

Ice: Basically Mulder and Scully are just going to spend this entire story just bitching and moaning at each other angrily. If you’re not into that sort of thing, back out now. I’m warning you–MAJOR ANGST!!!

Red: Final story in the Vox Series. Mulder and Scully get a clue.

Although not a direct post-ep for 'All-Souls', this fic details how the chronic ScullyTorture in Season 5 may have affected Scully and impacted the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

Temporary Shelter by Gwendolyn

13,500 Words

Temporary Shelter cover

Mulder and Scully recoup after the events of Biogenesis and learn something from history about repeating mistakes.

An alternate ending to Biogenesis and negates the need for Amor Fati & Sixth Extinction.

Gwendolyn has beautifully crafted this story to make it easily imaginable, and definitely preferable to what we saw in the Sixth Extinction. 😉

Yee Haw & Much More by Satina

61,000 Words

Yee Hawj & more cover

Yee-haw : Rated NC-17, MSR RST, H : Mulder and Scully go undercover (or is that under covers?) as a married couple working on a ranch. When Mulder is injured in a sensitive place, who will provide the TLC he needs?

Two of a Kind : Rated NC-17, MSR RST, dub-con elements : Post-ep to "Three of a Kind" in which the Lone Gunmen find Scully under the influence of the injected drug and instead of just knocking her out, they call Mulder.

If I Were Her... : Rated NC-17, M/S : Musings of a fellow female agent.
If I Were Him... : Rated NC-17, M/S : Musings of a fellow male agent.

Drawing a Bath : Rated NC-17, MSR, UST, 'bation : Scully draws a bath while talking with Mulder on the phone.

OutFoxed : Rated NC-17, Sc/O, MSR RST : Scully has a boyfriend. Mulder doesn't like him. All is not what it seems.

Rose Petal : Rated PG , MSR : Post-ep to "Never Again" in which Mulder's thoughts during Scully's absence are examined. Sorry, no smut here, just an angst-fest.

Not Everything Is About You : Rated NC-17, MSR, BDSM : Another "Never Again" post-ep. "You know, this is unacceptable. If he's going to treat me like his slave, he's gonna learn to do it right."

This last story includes Krycek non-con with Scully so I've put it at the end should you wish to skip it.

Dark Secrets : Rated NC-17, Sc/K non-con, MSR RST : Post-ep to "Paper Clip" in which instead of Krycek and Cardinal shooting Scully's sister at her apartment, Krycek goes to Scully's apartment, ties her up and makes her call Mulder, who has to watch while he does nasty things to her.

This anthology doesn't include Not an Exercise in Subtlety or Risky Business, which are already available at x-libris.

Before Satina went over to the slash side, and occasionally afterwards, she wrote some extremely satisfying MSR erotica. She had a gift for capturing the intense desire our agents had for one another. These are those stories (plus one PG fic and minus the ones above that I've already posted here.)

If you're interested in reading Satina's Mulder/Krycek fics, they can be found at HegalPlace.com on wayback.

Kacaso made covers for many of these fics, but sadly few of the M/S ones remain.

Cruise by M Partous

A series of mysterious deaths aboard its ships leads a cruise line to contact the FBI as rumours of a vengeful ghost begin to fly. Is the killer striking from beyond the grave?

I do like the idea of Mulder & Scully stuck together on a cruise ship, so there may be a few more cruise ship investigations that I'll post.  For scientific comparison, of course 😉

This one's set in Season 4, not long after TFWID, and poor Scully's obsessing a little too much about not being a certain person's soul mate.

It may seem like there’s a plot, but bear with me. I promise it has pretty much no bearing on the true meaning of this story at all. I wrote it to fulfill my personal smut quotient for the week.

Although this is set after the UnNatural, it's more of a post-ep for Milagro.

Hump day PWP. 🙂 Although this is set after the UnNatural, it's more of a post-ep for Milagro.  I'm not sure what else to say about this one - maybe don't expect a lot of romance.

Enough I: Crucify Me (Epilogue): Mulder and Scully make-up. Kinda.

Enough II: Come Play My Game: Ummmm....Sex? Mind Candy? Mulder and Scully at a Ft. Lauderdale Club.

Some hump day PWP.  I love it when they have to fuck out their differences 🙂

I actually have a huge number of short fics with classic covers that I'd like to post. I was thinking of a month-long short fic special, but maybe "Hump Day Humping" could be a thing...

Strange occurrences cause Mulder to use past X-Files to solve a new one, which sends he and Scully spiralling toward a truth they were *meant* to discover.

Common Fate of All Things Rare, The by Scarlet Baldy & Aloysia Virgata

45,000 Words

Common Fate cover

Ever wonder what happened between the silence of Never Again and the flowers from Memento Mori? Ever wonder if Scully's night with Ed Jerse affected her relationship with Mulder in any way? Ever wonder what pushed Scully to go to the hospital and find out about her cancer in the first place? Ever wonder how her illness might have affected her work or if she ever thought about Leonard Betts' words?

Well we did...

This is an impressive case file set during that wonderful time of peak angst in Season 4.

I didn't plan t0 post two post "Never Again" fics in a row.  I'd mistakenly tagged this fic as Scully's Birthday but after a re-read discovered it definitely wasn't and it lost its planned Feb 23 release, slotting in after 'Dust' instead.

After you've done reading this fic, you have to indulge yourself in the hilarious outtakes, originally posted at undertherug.net. I've attached them as a PDF file for your added enjoyment:

Dust Series by Blue Samutra

17,000 Words

Dust cover

Dust: It’s a long road back from Philadelphia

Yellow Light: It’s like Groundhog Day

Snow: Since we lost the X-Files I’ve had a lot of time to think about my priorities, and I’ve realized that you’re one of them. I think you have been for a long time…”

Feeling: Scully struggles to come to terms with her changing relationship with Mulder

Complicated: Things like this happen to other people. they don't happen to Dana Scully.

Dust Out the Demons: Elton solves all ills

This starts with a jealous Mulder immediately following "Never Again". I got a little confused timeline-wise after that as it seemed to go to Season 6 before heading back to season 4 and 5. Just to with it and enjoy the angsty smut. 🙂

Mobius by ShipperX (LA Ward)

Mobius cover

While investigating the disappearance of a physicist, Scully finds someone she didn’t expect—Mulder.

This is a post-Requiem fic, with Scully working alone after Mulder's disappearance.   It's a very clever story about our agents and their fight to reunite.

Some very early visitors to this page may have noticed the change of cover - Once again, I stumbled across the original cover right after uploading the story here so I've replaced it in the files.  I assume this cover was made by the author but please let me know if you know otherwise. 🙂

Pandora’s Box by Rachel Anton

8,900 Words

Pandora's Box cover

Scully’s curiosity gets the better of her.

Author’s notes: This thing is the result of one too many conversations about Bad Blood. It takes place after Scully’s second autopsy and drifts off into a universe all it’s own...

A bonus fic because I'd meant to post it on 22 February - 23 years since Bad Blood first aired in the USA, although I could have saved it until 18 May when it first aired in Australia I suppose.

It's a favourite episode, but one that's distinctly underrepresented in smutfics.

Bad Blood Challenge!!!!

There’s so much opportunity in this ep for some added smut that I’d like to issue a challenge to our wonderful fanfic community to smutify the episode in as many different ways as possible.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Mulder’s slide show… in the dark… having to prove once and for all who’s right. I don’t know about Scully, but Mulder’s slide shows turn me on.
  • They were drugged!!!! run with it.
  • Scully straightening up Mulder’s clothes while they wait for Skinner. What was that all about??? Did they get it on on the couch in Skinner’s waiting area, or did they arrive like that?
  • Sliding around on his belly behind an RV must have necessitated some Scully-doctoring to make sure something important wasn’t injured. She’d have to have been more concerned than he indicated.  At the very least, running her fingers through some hair is guaranteed to have happened.
  • Magic fingers. That’s got  to lead your mind somewhere dirty.
  • Scully puts the cowboy boots Mulder told her to pack to good use and rides him wearing nothing but...
  • Mulder’s theme from shaft - There are lyrics like private dick and sex machine to play with, if not at the time, maybe later Scully could tease him about it when he comes to…
  • Jealous Mulder confronts Scully in the morgue, perhaps?
  • Getting stuck together in the coffin in the vampire's RV.
  • Do they even know remember what happened before they woke up that last morning in Texas?
  • Channel Gillian’s inner troll since it’s her favourite episode, and get Mulder and Scully to get it on in some other outlandish way.

I hereby challenge all authors to write me some Bad Blood smut to put in a Shipper's Digest anthology 😀 Send any and all fics or links to fics you'd like to submit to xlibris at xf-redux dot com by 30 April 2021. Please xxx

After Midnight by Jenna Tooms & KellyC

72,000 Words

After Midnight cover

Mulder and Scully move through the events of season six, carefully changing from friends to lovers.

Once upon a time there was a vignette. And when the vignette was posted, there were pleas for a sequel. However, the author had no ideas for a sequel, so she let a friend write it. The sequel then inspired the original author, so she wrote more. And so it went, back and forth, until the original vignette became . . .   After Midnight.

Mulder is repentant after Two Fathers/One Son.  Scully forgives him, a little at a time.  They have to rebuild trust.  This series takes you through season six from One Son onwards.

Jenna's made an illustration for each story in the series. There are too many to attach here, but they're included in the ePub & PDF versions.

Let's continue Christmas morning 1998...

This story continues on from "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas".

I've been convinced that I could probably post another festive fic since one of the fourteen wasn't holiday themed, so here's a short, sweet 1998 post HTGSC fic by a fellow Aussie who hadn't actually seen the episodes yet because we were always months behind the USA.  😀

I've used a collage by Tere for the cover.  Tere was probably the artist who inspired me to experiment a bit more with my own digital art, and she also shared a lot of brushes and textures etc, which are still available from classic.tere-art.com (via the wayback machine).

This story finishes off my 14 festive days of fics I challenged myself to post to get myself in the swing of things again. I'm aiming to get back to posting 3 times a week, but I still haven't managed to get back to reading emails again. Fingers crossed that I get there soon. I have important emails to send too. 🙂

Sorry I've been derelict in my uploading duties again, but unfortunately it's par for the course when battling chronic illness. I did really want to get some Christmas fics up so I'm pushing myself to get some holiday joy to you, and hoping that it gets me back on track.   I apologise to those lovely people who've contacted me and I haven't gotten back to you. After a heated argument, Mulder and Scully find themselves in a living hell, not literally, thankfully. This story is about self-indulgence, drowning sorrows and somehow, reaching salvation after all. Set during "One Son".

"One Son" fic is my all time favourite.  On top of the Fowley angst I love the intensity of the seething feelings of betrayal after Mulder's "making it personal" comment.   This fic takes advantage of that and it's nothing if not personal.

I suggest ficsave.xyz if you'd like to download from fanfiction.net.

Mulder has just pulled up at Scully's apartment after they returned home following Emily's funeral.

I really like how Scully didn't need to wait for Mulder to 'save' her in this story, she knew what she needed. 🙂

I liked the idea of naked Mulder out on the couch, so that's how this dustjacket began.  I did originally do it for SarieFairy with less Scully, but it didn't feel right so I later reconfigured it to make sad Scully more prominent. This was the original shared on tumblr.  Welcome to fandom, SarieFairy!

I wanted to post a Beltane fic for Beltane, so this was the obvious choice. I'm limited to providing the original web link only in accordance with Pru's wishes, but fortunately the story is in a single text file, so you can print it from your browser in PDF format [Ctrl+P], or use a plugin like EpubPress for chrome/firefox. Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley, a partnership of like minds. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, a partnership of perfect opposites. A journey beginning pre-XF and throughout the series exploring these relationships. (Includes Mulder, Diana, and Scully POVs)

Chaps 1-5: pre XF- Pilot
Chap 6: S2-S5
Chap 7: The End
Chap 8-9: Fight the Future/ The Beginning
Chap 10: Drive/ Triangle
Chap 11-12: Two Fathers/ One Son
Chap 13: Arcadia-Field Trip
Chap 14-17: Biogenesis arc

Although this fic examines the Mulder/Fowley relationship, it is MSR. It gives a lot of insight into the behaviour we see on screen, and adds so much depth to all of these characters.  Admiralty  even made Diana almost actually likeable. Or appreciable anyway.  It gives a whole new understanding of the motivations and events of seasons 5 to 7.

This is what I came up with following a quick search for a Good Friday fic.  PBV is a favourite episode and this story adds to that. Plus there's a rather humour-filled sex scene in Part II for those inclined.

Bitter and Butter Pecan and the four-part Flavours follow up reflect Lilith's anger with Mulder after One Son. Scully receives a series of unusual birthday suprises.

Scully’s birthday present was only the beginning. An offer, an acceptance, and a refusal.

Oops, I'm late for Scully's birthday. Never mind, this treat doesn't have a use-by date.

This is another post One Son angst-o-rama, which I have a bit of a penchant for.  With the way Mulder behaved in One Son, I like to give Scully a pass to do whatever the fuck she wants to show Mulder what a stupid jerk he was. 🙂

Having Marita come to Scully is an ingenious plot point that you don't see very often, and it reinforces that Scully doesn't need Mulder. On the other hand, Mulder does need Scully, and the Lone Gunmen are there to help things along .

Basketball Therapy by Kel

Book Cover: Basketball Therapy by Kel

Set shortly before Tithonus, this story explores life in the bullpen, where tedium and background checks are the order of the day. When Scully gets drawn into an investigation at a Maryland hospital, Mulder gets trapped in a deadly hostage situation.

Didn't Mulder seem relaxed and well-adjusted in Tithonus? How was that possible? Why wasn't he out looking for alien colonists, fighting the future? Read on; it will be revealed.

Kel zeroes in on that IDGAF Mulder of early season 6 and gives him some context.  She also puts that waterbed to good use. 😉

What happens after the funeral in Emily...

A lesson for CC:  When you give the agents life-changing angst, don't just ignore it the next week, make it count by turning it into a rampant smutfest.   Mulder helps Scully deal with the aftermath of Emily.

Scully's missing, having left home with CSM. When she returns, emotions are running high. Post En Ami. Mulder's POV.

"Three Times - Overture"

Three Times: Restart
After a sexual misadventure in the aftermath of En Ami - Mulder and Scully still haven't talked about what happened. Mulder returns from his trip to England to find Scully considering fate.

I love Mulder's angst-level at the end of En Ami, so I love a good post-En Ami fic.

Shipper’s Digest 712: X-Copulation

25,000 words

I've been screencapping for the new xfphotos archive and happened to catch sight of this episode as it was autocapturing, which inspired me to do a post-ep anthology.  The first story is only PG rated, but it's a good laugh and a reminder of some of the events in the episode.

  1. Bill Scully Meets The X-Cops by Girlie_Girl7 (a smut-free appetiser)
  2. Inversion Layer by Blackwood
  3. Inevitable by Flynn
  4. The Thing With Feathers by Diana Battis
  5. Willow Park: Aftermath by Kelly Moreland

I've used the cover made for The Thing With Feathers in the dustjacket. This was made by Sofia J.

“Scully, have you ever asked yourself what kind of man would quit his job, leave his family, follow you across the country, and never contact you the entire time he was here. Never once, in ten years, did he call you, or write you, or contact you in any way. What kind of man is that, Scully?”

Daniel is a creepy stalker, and lives are at stake.  This is a wonderful thriller based around Scully's ex, set at the end of the seventh season.

Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

83,000 Words

Book Cover: Five Years and One Night by Shalimar

This story was originally a short post-Kitsunegari vignette. Then by request, Shalimar kept adding parts until it became this masterpiece.  One of the (multitude of) big plot holes of The X-Files that was never addressed by the 1013 writers was the fetus, created from Scully's egg, that Mulder discovered during the episode "Emily." Nor was the emotional fallout of that episode, and its startling revelations, on their partnership ever dealt with during the series.  "Five Years and One Night" addresses both of those issues, through the creation of an alternative universe that begins in the aftermath of "Kitsunegari", then takes off into its own complicated plot-line six months later, when Mulder arrives to disrupt the carefully reordered life that Scully has created for herself across the continent, away from him and the X-Files. An emotional tale, set in the exotic surroundings of Singapore.

I decided that I just had to post this story, but I'm happy to remove it on request.  I'm counting on the fact that it's 21 years old now and if Shalimar ever even thinks of the story any more, she'd be happy to know that it's still being enjoyed.  This is super-angsty Emily fallout fic, with loads of action including some wild and frenzied adult action. It's definitely a classic.

Shipper’s Digest 619: UnNatural Attraction

28,000 Words

I had trouble deciding what to post today, and when in doubt, turn to smut. This anthology contains seven innings, all with home runs.

  1. Backstop by Fialka: UnNatural smut biscuit
  2. Batting Practice by Shanda: post-ep smut
  3. Alternate Ending - The Unnatural by icedteainthebag: Home Run!
  4. Exhibitionism Inspired by Baseball by DiAlex: Who would have known that all it took was a little game of baseball....
  5. No More Giants by KrisMac: Unnecessary Things
  6. Balls, Boys & Birthday Gifts I & II by DenyTheTruth: What was going through Scully's mind during her and Mulder's little batting session? And what comes after the credit ran?
  7. Sexual Diversity in Chicago by haphazard method: You mean the title's not enough? Another MSR smutfest, inspired by Mulder's "Get over here, Scully" in The Unnatural.

(Some authors names have been disguised to protect the not-so-innocent)

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

46,000 words

Book Cover: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Ryo Sen

Scully and Mulder argue over the Ephesian case and come to a new understanding about their relationship.

This is a bit of an angstfest from Ryo Sen, who keeps us teetering on the edge. The ending is probably a little bit on the sappy side for my taste, but for those into more of a smutfest than an angstfest, I've also posted Jenna Tooms' "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" for you. This one's set after "The Field Where I Died", an ep that needed a little fixing. It's also a reminder that Teena Mulder didn't actually have a name for a very long time meaning authors had to make one up, and Ann, being Samantha's middle name, was a popular choice. Mulder's mother is also rather out of character considering what we knew of her later, so put on your Sarah McLachlan CD and get your mind to shift back to early season 4...

PS There is a character death but it happened in canon too.

Wonderland Series by Karen Rasch

Contains: Of Cabbages and Kings, Impossible Things, More Than Nothing, & Joining the Dance.

Cancer Arc: As Scully's cancer worsens, Mulder and she grow closer together, both learning that the only chance they have to survive is to draw strength from each other.

This one begins as a really sweet romance, with Mulder and Scully opening up to each other during Scully's cancer. It ends the same way, only with some (initially awkward) smut.

Risking Everything by Cathleen Faye

13,400 words

Book Cover: Risking Everything by Cathleen Faye

During the events of Pine Bluff Variant, we find that Mulder has risked his relationship with Scully for his assignment and as things begin to go bad he fears that he's fast running out of time to set it right again. But Scully has more faith in him than he realizes. This is an expansion on the events of Pine Bluff Variant, an XF episode with more layers (IMO) than it's given credit for. The title is taken from Mulder's line in the episode.

PBV is a favourite episode, and the Scully doctoring scene absolutely went this way, you just didn't see it all on screen 😉 .

The original image is from Cathleen's website, I only had this little version though, so I've expanded it a little for the cover 🙂

In celebration of my brand new tattoo I thought I'd put together a few angsty first time fics involving Scully's tattoo. I know many don't like this episode, and I admit that I was in the 'Scully didn't do it' camp for a long time, but I've switched to the 'Scully really wants Mulder but he's being a total jerk so she can go have whatever fun she needs without him' camp.  The jealousy angst made for good post eps regardless.

Part of the Crossing Lines series:
xgirl's introduction to the Crossing Lines universe:

(For a Glimpse of "What Could Have Been")

For those of you unfamiliar with my work, all of my stories take place in what has become known as the "Crossing Lines" universe. It was the name of my first fanfic, an "unplanned" effort that ended up paving the path for my version of Mulder and Scully following their 1998 big screen adventure.

This first set of stories — beginning with Crossing Lines and ending with Two Steps Back — essentially take place during the TV series' sixth season.  It continues in the Healing Waters series.

CROSSING LINES: Released March 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Fight the Future — Our favorite long suffering couple deal with their continuing and changing relationship after the "events in the hallway" and finally acknowledge the existence of the "L" word. Along the way, they establish closure on some important issues of the past year, including Mulder's unresolved guilt over Scully's illness.

WHEN: Released September 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for Fight the Future — Scully and Mulder each reflect on an eye-opening night of discussion.

REPARATION: Released March 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for One Son — After being a big-time jerk to Scully, Mulder must make amends.

IN MY LIFE: Released April 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Arcadia — Mulder celebrates life with Scully on a very special day.

SOUL ON SOUL: Released July 1999 — PG — Spoilers for Field Trip — In the immortal words of Eddie Van Blundht, "What's stopping us?"

TWO STEPS BACK: Released August 1999 — PG-13 — Spoilers for Rain King — The strange wackiness of the Rain King encounter takes a serious turn when Mulder and Scully are faced with revisiting an old fear.

Mulder and Scully deal with the aftermath of their little trip from "Field Trip," and confront an old case.

Today's the 20th anniversary of Field Trip's first airing in this part of the world, so I've gone with a post Field Trip casefile.  It's PG but it doesn't need the smut. It has a nice relaxed UST feel and lots of flirtines intermingled with a revisit with an old monster of the week.

Seeds of Synchronicity by Mountainphile

91,000 words

Book Cover: Seeds of Synchronicity by Mountainphile
Part of the Synchronicity Universe series:

Six years after the events of "Aubrey," Scully and Mulder revisit the Missouri town to confront old demons and lay new ones to rest.

Mountainphile takes us back to the town of Aubrey late in Season 7,  where murders continue despite their solving the case way back in Season 2.  She also manages to tie some mytharc-related Scully angst in, all while Mulder and Scully are attempting the navigate recent changes to their relationship.  I'm in awe of authors who can write complex plotlines whilst keeping our heroes in character and tossing in some angsty sexytimes, and  Mountainphile is definitely awesome.  It's this clever use of the characters that I wish we'd seen more of on screen at the time in place of episodes like Fight Club. Whilst in canon the mytharc got out of control with as much as possible crammed into double- or triple-eps, I would have liked to have seen the occasional monster of the week eps include a little aspect of it here and there in the way Mountainphile's done it, rather than a massive dump of ever-changing overly-complex mytharc a few times each season.  But that could just be me. 🙂

Pythagorean Harmonics by Vesalius

39,000 words

Book Cover: Pythagorean Harmonics by Vesalius

What if Pythagoras was right and all IS number, and the universe is indeed harmonious? Post-episode study of the human condition.

This is a post-Biogenesis treatment of the mythology that seems to make sense. I have to admit that The Third Extinction/Amor Fati left me clueless, despite trying to read many post-ep analyses. There seemed to be so much in it that was unresolved or unexplained and I had to admit that I'd finally lost the plot of the mytharc.

This fic is the action/adventure story we should have had after Biogenesis.  Scully's trip to Africa has a purpose, and with what she learns she's able to rescue Mulder so they can both go after the truth.  It's the kind of writing that highlights just how wrong CC got it.

Filling in the gaps before, during and after Arcadia, with alternating POVs.

Yes it's another Arcadia fic.  This one's a lot shorter on plot than Illusions - it's pretty much just a fun, irreverant, frolicsome smutromp.  Scully gets to play a little one-on-one with Mulder, and it turns into one of those lurid fics that CC warned us about.  Ms AM has decided to out herself as her current author name: Ms31x129

Ms31x129 also provided her own cover, below, which is on the actual fics.

These fics have been compiled in the order in which they were posted to Ephemeral, but the PDF & ePub versions should have a table of contents so you can read them in whichever order you like. They are all pre-eps, post-eps or missing scenes.

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 4

46,000 words

The final volume of the Alternative Season 8 project contains:

Vienen by Tiffany & Jo
Alone by Juliettt
Essence by Kristel St Johns
Existence by Kristel St Johns
Evolution by Kristel St Johns
Extras: About the Authors & Secrets of AS8 Special

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volumes One,   Two and Three before embarking on Volume Four.

Kristel and the AS8 crew wrap things up and tie it all in a neat little bow for us in this final installment of Alternative Season 8.  There's an extra episode that gives the original run (and any subsequent outings for that matter) more of an ending that Chris Carter could dream of.

If you haven't visited the website, each episode not only had cover art but  an animated trailer, so it's worth a visit.

The final batch of Kimberly's dustjackets

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 3

60,000 words

Volume Three contains the episodes:

Via Negativa by Jaz
Salvage by Heather
Surekill by Sam
Empedocles by Jo & Hazel
Dead Alive by Nancy
Three Words by Tracy

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volume One and Volume Two before embarking on Volume Three.

Again major improvements were made to these episodes, but the one that blew me away most was "Salvage".  It was completely replaced with a mytharc episode, which is full of action and makes the mess of mytharc so much better.  It was one of those (many) moments reading fanfic where I was gobsmacked at just how good the idea was and how it made so much sense to do it that way.  It's disappointing that it's not the creator showing this much love and respect for the characters, their development, and the stories, but fans of the show.  Thank any an all deities for fan fiction writers of this calibre.

Dustjackets created by Kimberly:

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 2

60,000 words

Volume 2 of Alternative Season 8 contains the following episodes:

PerManum by Kristel St Johns
Roadrunners by XochiLuvr
This Is Not Happening by Jo & Tracy
Patience by MaryAnn
Badlaa by Elizabeth & Alicia
Redrum by Lara Means

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volume One before embarking on Volume Two.

These talented writers managed to improve all these episodes exponentially, and believe it or not actually managed to pull a decent story out of Badlaa.

The very creative Kimberly produced the following art work for these episodes:

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 1

54,500 words

Alternative Season 8 is a retelling of the episodes aired during the eighth season of The X-Files, utilizing the same starting point (the 7th-season finale, "Requiem") and the same essential story premises. We do this in hopes of demonstrating that, given the same basic storylines, there was a better way this season could have been handled, a higher road the producers could have taken. Departures from characterization will be rectified, needless and senseless continuity errors will be fixed, and bad storytelling and plot devices will be eliminated.

These are not "novelizations" of the episodes, as such, nor are they screenplays. They are written in the third person, present tense, but with a minimum of narration. This eliminates the more distracting elements of reading a screenplay, while still focusing on the dialogue and actions. Everyone reading these episodes is aware of show, the actors, and how what happens would have been portrayed. Beyond the essential elements of action and dialogue, we leave the fans to supply the rest--the spirit and emotion of the story--with their imaginations and preexisting knowledge of the characters and situations of "The X-Files."

Some text from aired eighth season episodes will be used directly, and some will be discarded or edited to suit the spirit of Alternative Season 8. The idea is not to claim that the eighth season of "The X-Files" never happened, but to demonstrate that it could have happened better.

We do this because we love the show, and we are distressed by the direction it has taken. Because we want to renew our faith in these characters who have become a part of ourselves. Because we want to make the show better, to recreate the show we loved once again.

The AS8 writers also provided a complete zip file of .txt versions which I'll attach as a download option with this volume.  There's also a link to their website in the download area.  I'm getting intermittent 404 errors so if it disappears you can view it via archive.org.

It's important to note that in addition to rewriting the episodes, the authors have re-ordered them to have the season flow better, so episodes may not be where you expect them to be.  There are 22 episodes in the Alternative Season 8, which I've split into 4 volumes.  The first contains:

Introduction: About VS8
Within by Kristel St Johns
Without by Kristel St Johns
The Gift by ga
Invocation by Jo
Medusa by Samantha Wilkinson

Alternat(iv)e Season 8 was arguably the best thing to come out of Season 8. These talented authors turned a season which was rather problematic into a much more palatable one, which unfortunately for TenThirteen really highlights  just how poor the efforts by CC et al were.  This is my replacement canon for season 8. Actually I have very little acceptance of any seasons after season 7 so it's quite a compliment to these authors that I'm willing to begrudgingly consider that it may have happened 😀

I can't remember whether they treated Mulder's ridiculous brain disease as a real thing or a hoax (or just ignored it), but I do have AS8x03 "The Gift" marked as a fic I really enjoyed, so I'm confident they fixed it somehow.

Kimberly made all the dustjackets for the series (except the consolidated volumes - please don't blame her for those!).  Original covers are included in the downloaded volumes and on the webpage.

Contact High by Penumbra

16,000 words

Book Cover: Contact High by Penumbra

Scully drops by Mulder’s apartment one evening and one thing sort of leads to another. Colonization metaphors abound. Mulder’s new bed has a cameo.

I love Penumbra's post-ep for Field Trip.  These are the hallucinations CC didn't want us to know Mulder and Scully shared. Just try to ignore the use of the F word. (You'll know what I mean - that awkward F word).

Little Black Dress I & II by Evielouise

7,000 words

Book Cover: Little Black Dress I & II by Evielouise

I: All the other writers came up with serious, soul-searching post-“En Ami” fics. I wrote smut. Go figure. While watching that scene in the restaurant, I really wished Mulder could see Scully in that black dress…

II: Mulder takes Scully dress shopping to replace that little black number he burned in the incinerator in my last fic.

Mulder can show a bit of a jealous and territorial streak, but it rarely extends beyond some quality pouting.  At the end of En Ami he took his pouting to a new level as he tried to deal with the hurt, fear and betrayal he felt over Scully's jaunt with  Cancerman.   I loved Mulder's intensity, and this angst has delivered many a delicious fic.  Evielouise capitalised on the smut potential as she brought together a conciliatory Scully and a fuming Mulder for a smouldering first intimate encounter.  She then continued with a little more Mulder territory marking in the followup.

Sex, Violence & A Complicated Fable by Beduini

Book Cover: Sex, Violence & A Complicated Fable by Beduini

Sex, Violence & Filling in the Gaps:  Hello! It’s me! (dancing on pointe) Here to ply you with more shameless fantastical MSR! (demi-plie) In this episode, a conversation goes slightly off topic. (sissonne fermee) Enjoy!  Post episode for FPS.

Sequel - A Complicated Fable: A very smutty romp through Los Angeles. Post episodic for all things, Brand X, and Hollywood A.D.

I love the way Beduini's dirty mind works. She begins this pair of stories with some intense UST, then takes us to its natural conclusion, and beyond.

Making it Personal by Brandon D Ray

50,000 words

A series of episode-based vignettes, covering the second half of Season 6 and tracing the evolution of Mulder & Scully's relationship during that time.

Brandon follows the canon of Season 6, particularly One Son to Biogenesis, giving it his own twist.

There are two other dustjackets I've uncovered of stories included in this series.

What Happens in Vegas by Malibu Sunset

25,000 words

Book Cover: What Happens in Vegas by Malibu Sunset

This is an alternative ending to the episode Three of a Kind. What might have happened if Scully had reached Mulder when she called him and he had met her in Vegas? Maybe this….

Another  "I was drugged" story, where our heroes were both under the influence and resistance was low. Wild abandon ensues.

He is the Master of His Fate, She is the Captain of Her Soul by ScullyLikesScience

946,000 words & counting

Book Cover: He is the Master of His Fate, She is the Captain of Her Soul by ScullyLikesScience

The story begins during the final events of “The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati.” It then chronicles a canon-compliant progression of Mulder and Scully's relationship throughout Season 7, including the beginning of their love affair, and on through Seasons 8 & 9.

The story will conclude post-IWTB, and may or may not incorporate Season 10 & 11 storylines.

This is the first of the "current classics" I want to include here.

With works on AO3, I'll only link to the story in its original location, because it can be downloaded from there in a number of formats.  Plus, this one is still being added to.  It follows canon, so it's not a WIP as such.

New Millennium Series by Vickie Moseley & Ten

140,000 words

Book Cover: New Millennium Series by Vickie Moseley & Ten

This starts as a post-ep for Millennium, but quickly gets out of hand as canon continues to disappoint.

Dear Chris: this is how I would have loved to end that episode. But you didn't do this, so I had to.

Consummating the New Millennium by Ten

Mulder and Scully finally make it back to Scully's apartment after telling Maggie the good news.

Homecoming by Vickie and Ten
After being returned by the UFO, Mulder sets out on the path to recovery - and out of the hospital - with his wife by his side.

The Connection by Ten
After Mulder's return from his abduction and a stint in the hospital, he has been discharged at last. Scully cannot wait to have a peaceful night's sleep at home with her husband, but surprising events unfold.

On My Own by Vickie
Scully has to go back to work, and even though Maggie is there to help, Mulder is on his own.

She wants to feel alive. Post Never Again and onwards. Serious angst.

All available parts of the story have been combined. Warning: This series was not completed, but what's available ends in a satisfactory way.  Actually, I wasn't even aware that there were more parts than the widely available trilogy until the lovely Marina Frenzy pointed out there was an incomplete part 4.  Part 4 is only available on Mish's old personal page via the wayback machine.
