Werewolf Chronicles + Standin’ at the Crossroads by Frogdoggie

108,000 Words

Werewolf Chronicles cover

WCI: Wisconsin Death Trip: Mulder and Scully travel to Wisconsin to investigate some cattle mutilations. Their discovery of the cause behind the mutilations soon proves to be something very terrifying. This is a horror story.   !CW: rape (Mulder)

Standin' at the Crossroads: Mulder, Scully and Skinner travel to Maine on a case that proves to be a very dangerous and then deadly, X-File.

WCII: Not With a Whisper: Mulder and Scully revisit some familiar Wisconsin friends and then confront some familiar foes as well in this wide ranging X-File adventure. The story takes the Mulder-Scully relationship to one possible conclusion too.

Sometimes authors cause me to make decisions. I'm crap at making decisions, but after much thought, I bring you a frankenfic of The Werewolf Chronicles with "Standin' at the Crossroads" in the middle. It's not that they don't go in series, it's that there's a thematic difference. They're all horror stories with dark forces though.  If your head has been taken to a different place during the second story, you're welcome to go back and read just the two Werewolf Chronicles stories.

"Wisconsin Death Trip" has some disturbing scenes, so be prepared. "Standin' at the Crossroads" sees Skinner getting a workout  with a former flame, not entirely within his control, leaving Mulder and Scully to save them all, as only they can. Frogdoggie often has a soft spot for Frohike in his stories, and "Not With a Whisper" sees Frohike getting some action as the Werewolf Chronicles are brought to an end. All three stories contain dubcon elements, so proceed with caution.

This was the cover I originally made for Standin' at the Crossroads before I combined the stories. Some artistic license has been used, mainly because it was originally the cover I'd made for "El Quinto Sol" before I dug up the original dustjacket for that story. I've run out of fics to use it for right now. 🙂

Mercury Falling by C Slatton

Mercury Falling online cover

It's 1988 and Wheeling, West Virginia has serial killer on the loose. One who kills to attract the attention of a very exclusive audience: a young, hotshot profiler named Fox Mulder. But that's not Mulder's only problem for the moment. In fact, the killer may just have to get in line...

A very elaborate look at a younger Fox Mulder: profiling hotshot and total nutcase. So much is explained in this story about how Mulder came to be the brilliant but distrusting and somewhat paranoid person we see in the show.

It also answers a few questions you never thought to ask. Or is that what a dream is supposed to do? 🙂

The original online version of the story also had images in each chapter. Most images weren't saved, so I've had to guess from their file names & surrounding text etc what they were.

This fic was so beloved that it even had its own shrine on ArcticFox42's site. I've added a couple of the images below.

Faith by Suzanne Bickerstaffe

36,000 Words

Faith cover

While working on a case involving the firebombing of black churches, Mulder and Scully share their innermost thoughts when locked in a life-and-death situation.

!CW: some characters maintain racist views and use offensive language

This case file set early in the cancer arc reprises the role of Atlanta Detective, Mike Thomas, from "Flights".

It takes me right back to that late-season-4 Scully who is determined to handle everything on her own and rebuff any attempts Mulder makes to make life easier for her, leaving him feeling lost as to how to deal with her illness himself. Although there's no MSR here it still comes with feels and captures the genuine platonic love between them, particularly when they spend time trapped together, believing it may be their end.

Injuries to the Spirit by MystPhile

Injuries to the Spirit cover

Injuries to the Spirit: Scully is captured by a psychopath; Mulder  investigates. The story explores the effects of being held captive by a madman.

Injuries Redux: In the aftermath, Scully prepares to testify and, with
Mulder's support, attempts to come to terms with her experience.

CW: There is some really disturbing imagery to do with a child in this one.

I'm feeling so much better now that I've not just uploaded, I've gone with major torture. I wish I could get Scully to my psychologist, she's a miracle worker. 🙂

This one is a rough one, and for those who need a smut payoff after tolerating torture, you may wish to skip this story and come back Wednesday for the top shelf PWP I have scheduled.

Carol-Lee by WestShore

Carol-Lee cover

Mulder is kidnapped and kept in a prison - in his mind - by an odd woman with mysterious powers.

I set myself a challenge to have a smut-free week after feeling  dirty about so many recent smut-posts. Be assured that I've gotten that out of my system now and will return to regular programming.

This is an excellent MulderTorture adventure with creepy characters and gripping plot, written all the way back in 1995. The cover didn't come together the way I wanted it to, but the story is the main attraction anyway...

Final Series by David Hearne

160,000 Words

Final series cover

AKA the South Series or Goin' South series

Goin' Down South: Mulder and Scully go to a town called Final, Mississippi to investigate a crime that apparently did *not* happen.

Headin' Back South: Mulder and Scully return to Final.

Gone to Florida: The final story in the "Final" series

CW: Racist themes, dubcon-ish - brief sexual contact for self-preservation.

David's writing, despite heavy influence, is unique in the X-Files fanfic community.  According to David, this series was inspired by characters in the comics of Garth Ennis and the proliferation of unique secondary characters in the works of Charles Dickens. There's a lot of humour in the over-the-top characters from the deep south.  No real romance in this one, but a lot of laughs.

A Halloween treat by Donnilee, featuring some kick-ass!Scully.

Kimpa also made a really cool cover for this one, below. This story was actually a response to a challenge set by Kimpa. (Out in the Country was also a response to the same challenge.)

Dogged Determination Series by Rhondda Lake

Dogged Determination 1 Cover

Dogged Determination I - Watched : The Dog Scully takes in is more then he appears to be. Those looking for the animal are willing to kill to get him.

Dogged Determination Interlude I - Linen and Steel : A little erotic interlude.

Dogged Determination Interlude II - The Grapes of Wrath : More total mind candy - breakfast and food fights.

Dogged Determination Interlude III - Icy Hot : At long last we learn what Scully bought with those handcuffs...

Dogged Determination II - Hadinio`gwe'oek : They are gathering.  A dark, Iroquois-inspired tale.   CW: Disturbing imagery

Dogged Determination III - Pandora's Box : Alien DNA, a genius teenager and secrets from the past all end up interrupting Mulder and Scully's life just as Scully discovers some surprising news. Conspiracies, mysteries, some MSR and a dash of the paranormal for extra flavor. CW: Disturbing imagery, Sexual Assault

Dogged Determination Interlude IV - Endless Knot : A brief journal entry.

Dogged Determination IV - Suffer the Children : Horrific murders in Cleveland stall a vacation weekend and Hope's plans to move. CW: Child abuse, child rape, extreme violence.

Dogged Determination V - Watched Over : As Mulder and Scully get settled into a new home and prepare to receive the new arrival they get a call for help from a family vacationing in Colorado. There they must join with Buster and his kin to try and rescue two children in need of help. Introduces the heroes of Dean Koontz's original "The Watchers"

Dogged Determination Interlude V -The Greatest Gifts : Mulder ponders the meaning of Christmas. A short, sappy finale.

Oh, it's lovely being off-grid in the rainforest, but this satellite internet is going to drive me crazy when I have to refresh 3 times to load or save anything. I'll have to see how it goes as far as uploading while I'm here.

I listened to this one during most of the drive up. I had no idea how long it was, but it kept me occupied as I drove and made me drive extra carefully during certain scenes as I didn't want to have to submit dashcam footage with M&S in explicit flagrante delicto if I happened to crash while that was going on.

Anyway, this one is case related, it's actually a crossover at times but you don't need to know the other source/s, and packed full of MSR. Be aware that some parts come with content warnings, which I've tried to add to the descriptions above.

I won't be able to add the web version for this one, due to its size and the internet issues that I'm not up for facing right now. 🙂 I can't add the extra artwork either...

Lost Land (The) by Bonetree

130,000 Words

Months after the events of "The Mercy Seat," past, present and future collide as Mulder, Scully, Skinner and Granger go cross-country and around the world in a race against time to find a serial bomber on a very personal mission.

This is the last of the Goshen Universe stories.

Another epic fic in the Goshen universe. This one goes back and wraps up loose ends, so you'll probably need to read the other stories first.

At the time of posting this one I haven't had a chance to read it, but will try to update tags asap.

Mercy Seat (The) by Bonetree

60,000 Words

Months after the events of "City of Light," Mulder and Scully investigate a haunting by an entity that stalks a troubled woman and her husband. But what is this thing that haunts her? And haunts us all?

ARCHIVIST'S NOTE: the AO3 version doesn't include the prologue, but it's available at the local link.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This story takes place in what I call the Goshen Universe, an AU started with the story "Goshen" and which continues through "Secret World" and "City of Light." That said, you don't have to read the previous three stories to understand this one, since the plot sort of starts over with this story. However, there will be references to events from all three stories through this one, and original characters from those stories whom it will be assumed you are already familiar with, so you might start wondering to yourself what I'm referring to if you haven't read the other stories. This is also an established MSR story, and the previous three stories detail the beginning and evolution of the relationship, which might be helpful for you to know.

Back to posting the Goshen stories.  Another awesome dustjacket by Nlynn.

This one starts a new storyline, which shouldn't be as heavy as the last 2 instalments, and can be read without reading those. I haven't had a chance to read this one myself yet so some tags are missing.

Secret World by Bonetree

147,000 Words

Scully goes deep undercover to find the secret behind a mysterious death. But with what she learns, will she ever be able to come in from the cold?

!Please check the content warnings

A Scully-centric fic that plays to Scully's strengths without turning her into a saint. Meanwhile, poor Mulder is struggling with the separation, and Skinner is having headaches trying to keep him out of trouble.

Bonetree writes a compelling story with some fascinating characters. As Scully gets deeper into the case, we feel Mulder's angst and desperation over his lack of control.  There's also some wonderful Mulder-doctoring and caring for an injured Scully, and of course, some considered smut.

Paradise Lost + Walking Through Fire by Bardsmaid

89,000 Words

PL WTF cover
Part of the Sanctuary series:

Paradise Lost: Mulder is dismissed from the Bureau on trumped-up charges of having had contact with the X-files. Stripped of his driving motivation as well as his job, he's forced to look critically at his life. Scully, reassigned to a teaching position at Quantico, must balance her new responsibilities with her concern about her former partner's well-being. And Alex Krycek insinuates himself into Mulder's life for reasons that are not immediately apparent.

Walking Through Fire: Determined to gain reinstatement at the Bureau, Mulder searches for a way to bring Cancer Man down while also confronting the grim reality of unemployment, and Scully's responsibilities increase as she juggles her new assignment with her continued support of her ex-partner's quest. But Skinner requests her forensic expertise in an ongoing investigation, saddling her with an additional burden that may prove more than she can bear. A ghost from Teena Mulder's past prompts her to finally open up to her son, though the information she offers has the potential to crush him. And Alex Krycek inadvertently provides the evidence Mulder needs to foil the Smoking Man.

The Sanctuary Trilogy+ is a masterpiece of fanfic by Bardsmaid. She appeared to have a real sense of comfort with the characters and not only  did she make existing characters her own, she created rich, real characters that could have changed the trajectory of the show post Season 7 if only CC & co had thought of them.  I can't help but wonder what S8 would have been like had they introduced a character like Agent Wilkins who was eager to help rather than antagonise.

This series diverges from canon at the beginning of Season 6, so all the usual favourites are involved in a complex mytharc plot.  Take some time off and really immerse yourself in this one.

There are 4 parts to this series, which I've spit into three volumes. Whilst the Sanctuary Trilogy itself was completed, Topaz, the sequel Bardsmaid was writing at the time of her passing was not, but is included here as an optional extra.

Bardsmaid's website is still available at bardsmaid.org, and her original images can be found there and in the attached epub/pdf versions. New covers are included here due to the tiny size of the original pics.

PS  Leland is a much better name for CSM. He's so not a 'Carl'.

Dungeons and Demons by Spooky’s Girl

27,000 Words

Dungeons & Demons cover

Mulder, Scully and three others are invited to stay in a castle for one night. Can they survive the demon that's inhabiting it?

I had a couple of little reservations with this one in the beginning, but once I remembered that plot holes are canon I was able to get right into it and enjoy it.

I have to give Spooky's Girl bonus points for the double ditch, double jealousy, Phoebe link, and for correctly referring to the elephant 'necropsy'.

I'm still running on empty here, but I'm trying to get things uploaded, even if it's a little late...

Puppets Trilogy by M Partous

54,000 Words

Puppets Trilogy cover

Mulder, driven by a need to understand what really happened to his father, decides to head back to the silo (Piper Maru/Apocrypha) to find Alex Krycek, who he's convinced he heard crying out when he and Scully were there.

!CW: consent is freely given, but under circumstances that could be considered duress.

As stated in the author's notes, her wish was to explore the M/S relationship in a way that it "gives them a kind of mystical strength, one that frightens the powers that be, one that could actually help them in their quest for the truth"

Whilst their first time is under less than perfect circumstances, it connects them in a special way that continues through the challenges they face in the rest of the stories. I do have a special love for an early connection between our agents, and this one feels right for them.

Anamorphosis by Eponine119

106,000 Words

Anamorphosis cover

Assigned to find a horrifying serial murderer, Agent Scully discovers things about herself and her past that she never suspected.

Anamorphosis - Greek, to form anew. "the unfoldment of destinies follows ...upon the fall of outer circumstances...[a] substantial event was actually but a veil, a tissue of circumstance, conjured forth or the realization of a plot already formed." [Joseph Campbell, Creative Mythology]

!Numerous content warnings apply: child sexual abuse, recovered memories, rape (not described), suicidal ideations, dissociative disorder.

I know some of you like Scully!Torture, alongside Mulder!Caring of course, and Eponine119 certainly delivers in this one. She throws everything imaginable and worse at Scully in this story. Eponine does take some liberties with the Scully family, but they're entirely believable and usually make more sense than canon. If you like some pain with your MSR, this story will give you plenty of that.

Once upon a time there was a cover created by Mystic, but I can't get my hands on it. 🙁

Whole Catastrophe (The) by Diehard & Dryad

50,000 Words

The Whole Catastrophe cover
Part of the Absolute Beginners series:

This story takes place late in the year 2000. In the early Spring of the same year, Mulder and Scully finally got off the dime (after a false start, angst, guilt and a nightmare or two) and did the dirty deed. After a weekend of ‘solidifying their relationship’, they are pulled off the X-Files, but managed to find at least one way to console each other. Fast forward about six months—and you’ll be right we begin, dear reader. !cd (but not who you think)

The honeymoon is beginning to wind down for our agents after "Absolute Beginners" as they're finally sent back out on assignment and have to test out their new relationship 'in the wild' while dealing with a less-than-impressed local sheriff.

The web link will take you to invidiosa.com where you can find Diehard's fics, alongside some other fabulous authors, with many more images created by Invidiosa.

Blood of Angels by LoneGunGuy

68,000 Words

Blood of Angels cover

"History is not written in books, Agent Scully, but in an alphabet of human suffering. Every death leaves its mark upon the aether, burnt into the astral plane, scorched into the very fabric of the universe—a textbook accessible to any man who is willing to annihilate himself in its pursuit. History is a manuscript written on the clouds. Authored by the blood of angels.”

As Scully lies on the sidewalk, dead, Mulder holds the murder weapon in his hands and knows that he must have had a damned good reason for killing her....if only he could remember what it was....A bizarre, labyrinthine mystery with darkly comic overtones.

This is an early X-Files fanfic classic, written by the talented LoneGunGuy in 1996.  This one isn't for the faint of heart, it can get dark. With imaginations as twisted as those of some fanfic authors, I'm so glad they're putting them into good use rather than letting them roam the streets creating havoc. 😉

I can have mixed feelings regarding the mytharc on the show that makes me shy away from reading stories dealing with aliens and cloning and all that stuff, but there are many, like this one, that blow it out of the water.

Sadly, to my knowledge, a sequel to this story was never forthcoming.

Hallowed by OnlyTheInevitable

70,000 Words

Hallowed cover

In order to get a dangerous, misogynistic cult shut down, Mulder and Scully have to go undercover as a married couple to destroy it from the inside. When they get a little too involved, how will they manage to come out alive?

Can you imagine Scully being subservient and obedient in a misogynistic cult? Neither could OnlyTheInevitable. 🙂  This is another of the wonderful stories written as part of last year's case fic exchange.

Mulder enjoyed Scully's nightwear so much that I felt obliged to have her model it on the cover 😉

ELS by Dawson Rambo

207,000 Words

ELS cover

While waiting on the outcome of an OPR investigation Mulder and Scully are assigned to the ISU. Mulder is forced to profile again.

According to Dawson's webpage: The question most often asked by first-time visitors to this page and this novel is, "What does ELS stand for?" It's an acronym. Saying more than that would spoil this novel beyond repair. So, you'll have to read to find out.

This fandom is so blessed to have writers of the calibre of Dawson E Rambo. This is another of his epic fics that meanders through a lot of angst and UST  as they deal with their feelings towards each other and solve multiple cases.

Covenant by Rhondda Lake

27,500 Words

Covenant cover

Covenant:  Mulder & Scully have to come to term with some changes.  Takes place before Leonard Betts.

Covenant II: Monsters: Sequel to "Covenant". While exploring all the levels of their 'new' partnership Scully takes on a case involving deaths strange enough no one can deny they are X-Files. Their only link, abused children. Their only lead. A child who can see Mulder. Not all Monsters live in closets.

Covenant III: Death and the Maiden: This is a bonus extra for those who can't get enough glowing blue Mulder, but it WAS NEVER COMPLETED. The extra 7,000 words are not included in the overall word count.

This is a classic fic by Rhondda, but I never knew it continued after the original story until it was mentioned recently on facebook.  I then discovered a part 3, but sadly it was shelved so Rhondda could finish other ongoing stories and never picked back up. Consequently you won't find it online.

I'm pretty sure JJ (cover artist) is Julie Jekel, but I'm too tired to delve into confirming that right now.

Iniquity by Vickie Moseley

36,000 Words

Book Cover: Iniquity by Vickie Moseley

While still working on Domestic Terrorism, Scully takes a vacation and Mulder finds himself doing a profile.

! Content Warning: some graphic imagery, not for tender readers.

Scully's in San Diego for Thanksgiving when Mulder's sent there to profile a baby killer.  Once again, Scully doesn't get a vacation and ends up babysitting Mulder.  Vickie has Mulder in full-on psycho profiling mode in this one, with an added degree of physical difficulty, all while staying at Bill Jr's house.

You may have noticed that I haven't been uploading regularly since returning from my time away with the bats. I'm behind in everything at home and struggling to get back into routine. I'll get back on top of it all once I stop beating myself up over it. 🙂

Mind Games by Spider

122,000 Words

Mind Games cover

A horrific series of child molestations and murders has escalated. The director himself, under political pressure from the Justice Department has no choice but to assign the FBI's best profiler to the case, despite a promise he made ten years previously. But this series of killings has no resemblance to anything anyone in the FBI, including the X-files' Fox Mulder, has ever encountered before.

! Content warning for disturbing subject matter - graphic description of violence towards children. Please read the introduction before reading.

Parts of this are really tough to read, but it's an important contributor to the acute Profiler!Mulder-torture,  and to a lesser degree, the Scully-torture.

This is an MSR, but Skinner also gets lucky. (Skinner feels like my dad, so I'd rather not know about what he does in his spare time, but  this wasn't gagworthy at all 😀  Maybe the other horrors made it all pale in comparison.)

I spent 6 days camping in a spectacular World Heritage area, and this is what I read. Go figure. Needless to say I took a couple of breaks, and I had to read a lot of PWP afterwards to recover.  Enjoy  😉

I'm very happy to report that I've just turned up Spider's original artwork for this fic, which I've now added below. I was also surprised to discover that she lived in the neighbouring town to me back in the day. I feel like I came within reach of basking in some of Sonny's limelight. 😀

Oklahoma by Amperage & Livengoo

162,000 words

Oklahoma

It's 1987 and the Oklahoma cops have an unsolvable case. Fox Mulder, golden boy of the VCU, is called in to stop the murders of children across the state. What he finds takes him places he never wanted to go and forces him to make the pivotal choice of his life.

Rated NC-17 for language and violence.

While my brain fog is limiting my ability to upload new fics I've decided to fix up and re-release some early uploads. The quality was hit and miss in some of the early ones. I've done a complete re-edit of this one to insert all the indents and line breaks to make it more presentable.

This fic is extreme pre-XF Profiler!Mulder-torture, with child victims, so it may not be for everyone, despite being sprinkled with the poetry of TS Eliot. It does tend to align with Eliot's (and the murder's) struggles with religious beliefs.

I believe the original artwork (below left) came from the Annex. In my original upload I added to that one (below right), but I've now created a new cover for reasons that will become evident shortly, much to my own amusement.

Originally released 10 March, 2019

I'm getting closer to fixing everything, but there may still be temporary breakages as I'm still doing long-overduebackground stuff. Thanks for being patient.
