They Can Mess You Up by David Hearne

They Can Mess You Up cover

"Scary, funny, sexy! A marvellous thrill ride!"
-- Larry King on "The Lazarus Bowl"

AKA "The Leno Fic", David documents the release of "The Lazarus Bowl" in this humourous post-ep for Hollywood AD. Although the night show hosts mentioned have moved on now, they can be easily substituted by any of their contemporaries.

Some silliness for hump day. This one was uploaded a while back but ditched for another fic at the time.

Faith by Suzanne Bickerstaffe

Faith cover

While working on a case involving the firebombing of black churches, Mulder and Scully share their innermost thoughts when locked in a life-and-death situation.

!CW: some characters maintain racist views and use offensive language

This case file set early in the cancer arc reprises the role of Atlanta Detective, Mike Thomas, from "Flights".

It takes me right back to that late-season-4 Scully who is determined to handle everything on her own and rebuff any attempts Mulder makes to make life easier for her, leaving him feeling lost as to how to deal with her illness himself. Although there's no MSR here it still comes with feels and captures the genuine platonic love between them, particularly when they spend time trapped together, believing it may be their end.

Flights by Suzanne Bickerstaffe

The pair are on the trail of a serial killer with an odd penchant for souvenirs, while Mulder helps Scully to deal with a shattering experience.

Some classic 'Mulder and Scully tracking down a serial killer' action, where only their unique perspective will lead to the killer, putting them in danger.

This was written and set early in the series, with their relationship commensurate with that timeframe: friendship and respect. It only has the higher rating due to adult themes.

I'll make sure I post something for the smut-fiends on Wednesday, as otherwise it's going to be a noromo week. 🙂

Black Hole & St Pat’s by Nicole Mason

17,000 Words

Black Hole St Pat's cover

The Black Hole: There's a rumor about the town that Mulder and Scully must investigate...Based on a true story, but the names have been changed to protect the innocent ; )

St Pat's: Somewhat of a sequel to Black Hole. Mulder and Scully return to Rolla.

This one's a strict case file, written in Season 2. The mytharc aspect is only very mild.

Distant Skies by Feathers

Distant Skies cover

Mulder drags Scully to Australia to investigate the death of a US government employee, but his hidden agenda is looking into a rash of UFO sightings near where the man died.

CW: pit bull terrier prejudice 🙂

Mulder pulls another case from a tabloid delivered to his door, this time with questionable jurisdiction and an extra-long flight.  Poor Mulder has a rough time of it.

This one does fascinate me as I'm not convinced that the thylacine is totally extinct. It's also set in a location familiar to me, which is the site of a well-known UFO event (the Kelly Cahill case mentioned in Season 10). I'd have liked the story to have gone on further since I was enjoying fond memories of the area and wanted Mulder and Scully to stick around a bit longer, but alas they had places to be. I've added a bit more info and links to the end of the story.

Since I've messed up this week's programming already I'm using the excuse of it being Australia Day today to post this today as a replacement for the usual Wednesday & Friday releases.  Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things soon.

Scully vs the Desert Monster by Anonymous

Scully vs the Desert Monster cover

Mulder and Scully team up with a particularly obnoxious Interpol agent in order to investigate random animal killings and Scully learns the true meaning of anger and male-bonding.

This really is a beautiful little story. Mulder's attempts to out-do the British agent are very entertaining, and Saint Scully earns her title with the patience and self-control she exhibits with the two of them.

Bonus points for the mention of The Chills.  This was a favourite song long ago, and is indeed a very melodic and arguably heavenly pop hit.... 😀

Carol-Lee cover

Mulder is kidnapped and kept in a prison - in his mind - by an odd woman with mysterious powers.

I set myself a challenge to have a smut-free week after feeling  dirty about so many recent smut-posts. Be assured that I've gotten that out of my system now and will return to regular programming.

This is an excellent MulderTorture adventure with creepy characters and gripping plot, written all the way back in 1995. The cover didn't come together the way I wanted it to, but the story is the main attraction anyway...

Blood Alley by D Deckert

An ailing Mulder and a distracted Scully investigate serial killings with a paranormal bouquet in the Southern California Desert.

This one certainly keeps you guessing. An intriguing case with lots of twists and turns.

Now You See Him cover

Be careful what you wish for—you might get it.

Some light-hearted angst as Scully has to cover for another of Mulder's predicaments and help him solve it...

Final Series by David Hearne

Final series cover

AKA the South Series or Goin' South series

Goin' Down South: Mulder and Scully go to a town called Final, Mississippi to investigate a crime that apparently did *not* happen.

Headin' Back South: Mulder and Scully return to Final.

Gone to Florida: The final story in the "Final" series

CW: Racist themes, dubcon-ish - brief sexual contact for self-preservation.

David's writing, despite heavy influence, is unique in the X-Files fanfic community.  According to David, this series was inspired by characters in the comics of Garth Ennis and the proliferation of unique secondary characters in the works of Charles Dickens. There's a lot of humour in the over-the-top characters from the deep south.  No real romance in this one, but a lot of laughs.

"I have been on the bridge that spans two worlds, the link between all souls by which we cross into our own true nature."

-- Fox Mulder, "The Blessing Way"

You're eyes don't deceive you - that really is a PG rating.  This is a fascinating case file set in season 3. There's that obvious season 3 disconnect with our agents at the beginning, but they're there for each other when they need to be.  Kel always injects humour into her Mulder and Scully, which always makes for a good read.

Sea of Desire & Those Who Love by S Clay

Sea of Desire & Those Who Love covers

Sea of Desire: At the request of a friend, and former professor, of Mulder's, Scully and Mulder travel to an island community off the coast of Maine to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several infant boys.

Those Who Love: People keep dying at a haunted farm in Connecticut.

More old fics, this time from 1995.  Both stories are quite representative of their season 2 relationship, but the second one would never have made it onto one of CC's story boards. 😉  Also, try not to feel too sad about a future plot point that messes with the first fic.

I blame my ADHD for the 2 covers. I can't read fics without doing something else. I usually get my computer to read them out loud for me and do other stuff as I'm listening.  I just happened to be playing in photoshop as I was listening to these, and each story was about the right time to create a cover, hence there are 2.

Fata Morgana by Julie Fortune

Fata Morgana cover

A routine investigation in a small town quickly explodes into life and death consequences.

This was the Julie Fortune story I thought I'd uploaded already.  I discovered that there were a few fics prepared around the time of the Great Computer Disaster of 2021 that never made it online.

It's been a rough week IRL and I didn't realise I was behind in my uploads, so I apologise that there was nothing new on Friday.  I do have a few really great fics picked out to share over the festive season, so please stay tuned...

Inferno Series by Pellinor

196,000 Words

Inferno cover

Inferno: Mulder gets drawn into a web of guilt and revenge that could rob him of his sanity, even his life. Both Scully and Mulder think they know what they are dealing with, but the truth is something neither of them have ever expected.

Purgatorio: Three months on, and Mulder shows no signs of even attempting to come to terms with what happened to him in "Inferno," and Scully begins to feel the strain of having to constantly sacrifice her own needs to the needs of her desperately unhappy partner. Things come to a head on a murder case when Scully simply can not accept Mulder's theory. Will their partnership survive?

Paradiso: While Scully attempts to undo the damage wrought by recent events, Mulder gets drawn into a web of intrigue that could lead him to the truth, but could just as easily destroy him.

Journey back to a difficult time in Season 3, after Paper Clip, where our agents seemed to have trouble finding a middle ground.  They're miles apart when they're sent away for a case, and things don't improve in a hurry.

No MSR, but lots of angst and MulderTorture.  Strap yourself in, because it's a bit of a rough ride for Mulder and Scully in this one. One for the angst addicts.

Distortions by Liz

Distortions cover

Mulder and Scully are sent to a small town in Colorado to investigate what appear to be ritualistic killings.

This is an early, NoRoMo safe story, reminiscent of "Our Town" but with a lot more angsty Mulder-Scully interaction.  It feels very much like those early episodes, with more of a horror component that directly involves Scully.

Silence, Sea & Sky by Anonymous

Silence Sea & Sky cover

Mulder and Scully investigate the disappearance of a young girl who may be the fourth victim of a serial killer and complications ensue when Mulder believes that the girl's sister has psychic abilities.

This is another early-ish casefile fanfic. It pushes the Profiler!Mulder trope, so that Scully is forced to profile a killer to save Mulder's life. A quality fic from a quality writer who went on to work in the industry.

History Lessons by Joann Humby

14,500 Words

History Lessons cover

A serial killer hunt gets Mulder in trouble with his memories of a past case but then gets Scully into worse trouble over her memories.

Joann has some realistic Mulder self-torture here, beating himself up about a past profile and evading Scully's attempts to draw out the problem.  It twists into a fascinating case as Mulder doesn't want his profile to let anyone down again - especially Scully.

Blood of Angels by LoneGunGuy

68,000 Words

Blood of Angels cover

"History is not written in books, Agent Scully, but in an alphabet of human suffering. Every death leaves its mark upon the aether, burnt into the astral plane, scorched into the very fabric of the universe—a textbook accessible to any man who is willing to annihilate himself in its pursuit. History is a manuscript written on the clouds. Authored by the blood of angels.”

As Scully lies on the sidewalk, dead, Mulder holds the murder weapon in his hands and knows that he must have had a damned good reason for killing her....if only he could remember what it was....A bizarre, labyrinthine mystery with darkly comic overtones.

This is an early X-Files fanfic classic, written by the talented LoneGunGuy in 1996.  This one isn't for the faint of heart, it can get dark. With imaginations as twisted as those of some fanfic authors, I'm so glad they're putting them into good use rather than letting them roam the streets creating havoc. 😉

I can have mixed feelings regarding the mytharc on the show that makes me shy away from reading stories dealing with aliens and cloning and all that stuff, but there are many, like this one, that blow it out of the water.

Sadly, to my knowledge, a sequel to this story was never forthcoming.

Locusts by Syn

29,000 Words

Locusts cover

An unexpected death begins a terrible journey for Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, one that threatens to tear their faith, their beliefs and their partnership apart.

There is a character death or two, but nobody major. Let's just say Bill's lost some of his bluster in this one.

Syn brings us an engaging  mytharc story with twists and turns and up and downs (mostly downs) as Scully is living a waking nightmare of betrayal and emotional torture, while Mulder is fighting to be believed.  An excellent story set shortly after Emily, and featuring a slightly annoying Detective Kresge.

Gazzaniga by Nevdull

Gazzaniga cover

The mind is a terrible thing to split.

Nevdull will have both sides of your brain working overtime with this X-file.

This is another case file rated R that's probably more like PG-13.

I'm getting closer to fixing everything, but there may still be temporary breakages as I'm still doing long-overduebackground stuff. Thanks for being patient.
