Want and Need I & II: Love isn’t always hearts and flowers. Sometimes it’s all about wants and needs.

Remember the first night Scully stayed at Mulder's apartment in Season 7? Something happened that night, and Scully's not entirely thrilled about how things are progressing. This story follows our agents from Sein & Zeit through some important events in Season Seven as they navigate the changes in their relationship.

Nine Days In February by Rah

Nine Days in February cover

Ten stories of  nine days over nine years.

Valentines Day from 1994 to 2002. 2002 actually features two stories: "Joy & Happiness" by Rah and "Greener" by Sagan.

These stories came as part of a Valentine's Day special at the long-defunct justduckies.org  in 2002. Rah takes us through the years and the different phases of their relationship, culminating in two stories in 2002, one by Rah and the other by Sagan.

What if Ethan was never edited from the Pilot episode? What actually happened between the scenes we saw? Tune in and find the true smutty story.

Today happens to be the 29th anniversary of my first X-Files episode - the pilot first aired in Australia on 10 Feb 1994.

In honour of this auspicious occasion I've selected a series that starts back at the pilot episode. Dyann recounts the first three seasons with a bit of a twist. Don't worry too much about Ethan... he can't last long after Scully begins working with Mulder 😉

The Scully/Ethan sex is more elaborate than I prefer, but it usually only lasts a paragraph or two. It's not that detailed, I just don't like any details when it comes to 'others'. It's easy enough to skim through if that's not your bag either and there's enough M/S smut to eventually cleanse your mind of it too. 😀

Finding Rokovoko by Prufrock’s Love

44,000 Words

Finding Rokovoko cover

A case in the Florida Everglades takes Mulder and Scully on a terrifying journey nowhere. The air conditioning and the laws of physics won’t work. She wants dinner and not to die. He dreams of a boy on the beach and not being Captain Ahab. A love story of absolute evil and existential doubt and truth that isn’t found on the free map from the Visitor Center.

As usual, as this is a Prufrock's Love story, I am unable to host it here so the link goes to the story at one of Mimic's sites.

Pru reminded me of just how envious I am of her cleverness and storywriting with this one. There is a gorgeous Mulder-Scully relationship here that tugs at the heartstrings as Pru tenderly takes us through the cancer arc with the added awkwardness of a sudden relationship change.

This was the story that I was getting vague memories of when reading AlienQueequeg's Gates of Hell but couldn't remember past that vague feeling of a similar circumstance. It was only that I was feeling warm & fuzzy after rescuing a kookaburra today that I put 'kookaburra' in my fanfic search program and this popped up. That kookaburra, currently recuperating at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, managed to bring me from worry to warm fuzzies twice today.

Usually Wednesdays are for short fics, but I didn't have another one ready to go so I figured that because Monday's release was relatively short it would all even out somewhere along the line....

Khyber Versus Season Seven by Khyber

57,000 Words

Khyber Vs Season Seven cover

A series of post-eps and replacement episodes based on a slightly different interpretation of canon. The idea, I hope, is that you could actually watch the S7 episodes I list below in the order I have them, intersperse them with my 'new' episodes and post-eps, and you would have a somewhat different, but still coherent story arc.

There have been some minor changes in order--"Theef" and "First Person Shooter" have swapped, as have "Je Souhaite" and "Hollywood AD." "En Ami," "Chimera," "Fight Club," and "Requiem"* have all disappeared and been replaced with new original episodes.

*These replacement stories never eventuated.

Like any season, there's going to be a few reruns.

Khyber's version of Season Seven:

the sixth extinction
amor fati
hungry
millennium / collapsar
rush
the goldberg variation
orison
the amazing maleeni
signs and wonders
sein und zeit
closure
x-cops
theef / weret-hekau
first person shooter / how gravity works on planet spooky
home from the war (part one) (replaces En Ami)
(rebroadcast S03x02) paper clip / coyote luck
where i end and you begin (part two) (replaces Chimera)
all things
brand x / amnesia
je souhaite / vapor trail
(rebroadcast S03x23) wetwired / poems
hollywood ad / the waterskiers  (includes a reworking of En Ami)
(rebroadcast S06x02) drive / the fall of our summer

Khyber has made a few changes to Season Seven and once again I'm bitterly disappointed that CC & co didn't add a few fanfic authors to their writing team to show them how it's done.  He starts adding to S7 just after Millennium, then lets CC have his way for a while before kicking back in after Theef.  A few old episodes have reruns along the way.

Just a warning that you may feel a little lost at one point but it will all make sense eventually.

Although this series was never completed there are no cliffhangers. The main storylines are wrapped up.

I haven't worked out yet whose artwork is used for the cover, but there was a cover for Weret-hekau on IOHO:

Redhead Dancing Girl Series by Sister Zooey

10,000 Words

Redhead Dancing Girl cover

Redheaded Dancing Girl:  GirlyScully. We all know it's in there and it's so damn nice to bring it out. I promise you won't require any fillings after reading this though.  When  a memory triggers a realization of sorts for Scully, she comes to understand that the power to control her relationship with Mulder lies in her new found knowledge.

Talking to the Walls: Scully's a nosy little thing.

Quite So New: Scully wakes up and - AHH! - There’s a man in the bed! What ever shall she do? (I should probably take these summary things more seriously, don’t you think?).

Superhero: I have a conspiracy theory (which I have been bothering the poor girls in my dorm with) about the shirt Scully is wearing in Rush. It's so very un-Scully. It's too - big. So where in the heck did it come from? And why in the heck are Mulder and Scully acting so goofy in the first scene of the ep? This is the fourth (and final) installment in the Redhead Dancing Girl Series.

A sweet little series starring the video collection that isn't Mulder's. This kind of hovers around the festive season finishing the morning of Rush.

Trilogy Series by Alanna

Trilogy Series cover
  • LAUGHING: A celebration of life.
  • ALEGRIA: A celebration of happiness.
  • INSIDE:A chaise-longue and a dream.
  • BURN: Inflaming of hearts and minds.
  • MILLION: The many sides of a person.
  • SEMANTICS: Memory is subjective and fallible.
  • PHOTOS:  Ringfic.  I admit it.  But with a slightly different twist.
  • SCARS: Fires cannot destroy the scars of experience.
  • OUTSIDE: A sequel to Inside
  • POSITIVE: The creation of life.

Some of the vignettes are post-eps for various Season 5 episodes.

I've always been a fan of Alanna's writing. It took me a few attempts to put all these stories into the right order, so hopefully I have it now. The stories were referred to along the way as part of a universe but were then gathered together on Alanna's website as the "Trilogy" series. Alanna using different names along the way didn't help matters. The series runs though a range of emotions as their relationship progresses.

Unfortunately the original image for this series didn't get saved to the wayback machine.

"What if they've been doing it all along?" asked my faithful friend and beta reader, Lee. What if, indeed ...

I can go along with this premise; I love a story where intimacy starts early.

The cover used is actually a recreation of the original, below. There are a few covers for which only thumbnails have survived so I started challenging myself to re-master them so they can be enjoyed again.  I'm not totally happy with my version, so if anyone has the originals I'll happily replace the images.

Isometry by syntax6

68,000 Words

Isometry cover

The story of a man, a woman and their lucky pickle.

This story starts after Kaddish & follows the episodes to Redux II.

Can you believe that today is National Pickle Day? It seems to come around so quickly... 😉

Seriously, I went to some website to make sure I knew what holidays were in November and found that November 14 is National Pickle Day. I don't know how widespread this occasion is, I was too astonished that it was even a thing. I'd been wanting to post another syntax6 story among others, but I can get overwhelmed deciding which of the many stories I have ready to post in what order, so I was hoping that seeing what holidays there were would help narrow my options. It was synchronicity that the first free posting day was dedicated to pickles and I had the perfect story to release.

Don't worry too much about the Mulder/other thing. It was never meant to be. Syntax6 manages to weave in plenty of drama and angst around the cancer arc and weaves the episodes into her story seamlessly.

Because images get posted in various places I have no idea who made them. MaybeAmanda did a lot of syntax6's images but these weren't credited on her website. The black and white cover below was found at the land of the yeti, but I have no idea if that's where it originated.

This is an awesome X-File, set after Je Souhaite, but centred on En Ami. It's one of those times where an author cleverly finds an opening in canon to fill with a creation of their own. Way better than CC's retcon.

  29. 5.05 "Passage of a Song" - post "Post-Modern Prometheus"

  31. 5.09 "Struggling Green" - post "Schizogeny"
  32. 7.02 "Fortune and Men's Eyes" - post "TSE: Amor Fati"

Time for some culture... these stories are an absolute pleasure to read. They are canon compliant so I thought it made sense to assemble them in episode order. They're listed alphabetically on Anne's website. The order in which they were written skips back and forth a bit.

There will be other stories related to this series released later this week. 🙂

Schizophrenic Series by JLB

Schizophrenic Series cover

SCHIZOPHRENIC: Scully deals with her split personalities, and what it means for she and Mulder.

BREAKDOWN: Tonight we’re different. Mulder will not speak.

TREATMENT: Mulder gives Scully what she wants…

SHATTERED: Was it a mistake?”

JLB was pissy with Mulder after "One Son" at the writing of this series.  As a result, we were blessed with a moody, desperate series of stories, with our heroes seemingly losing themselves and each other.  They take their discontent out on each other sexually while they try to work through their issues.

Married Series by Angela W

355,000 Words

Married Series cover

All 50 of Angela W's Married Series stories in one volume.

While on a case in Las Vegas, Mulder and Scully achieve some professional - and personal - goals. Basically, this is the way I would like to see the TV series end, then see future movies, etc. take off from this point.

There is no way I'm going to list all 50 summaries here. Angela creates her own little universe that continues to cross paths with season 6 & 7 canon, often as part of a bigger universe including some crossovers.

I'm stuck in the wet tropics for extra time, with the rain pouring down, and since I no longer have my daily bat-feeding chores I'm going to try to do some more uploads.

I had this fic playing in my car using text-t0-speech and I had to turn it off when it started making the cassowaries and crocodiles blush. There is some A-Grade smut in this one.  Although this fic is a little mushy in places for my liking, that's purely my preference, and I know some of you will particularly enjoy this entire series. A few of the individual stories are still standouts in my view regardless of their marital or family status. 🙂

Playground Series by Fialka

Seesaw: All in all, it's been one hell of a year.

Swings & Roundabouts: Between the blanket and the bed, it's anybody's guess...

I had hoped to upload a lot more while I've been away on my own, but real life shit is still causing issues. I apologise for the ad-hoc uploads, but it's all I can do right now.

This one's one for the angsty smut lovers. The road to true love never did run smooth, particularly when there's a lack of verbal communication involved.  Fialka takes us through some dark times in Season 7 but eventually brings us out into the light.

A series of canon-compliant missing scenes showing that the dynamic of Mulder and Scully’s relationship may have changed much earlier than previously thought.

Xfmaweezy has been a wonderful friend to me while I've been feeling less than awesome, and she sent me this fic to read when I was struggling with reading anything. I'm so glad she did. It certainly cleared me of the lingering angst I was feeling with the heaviness of the Goshen Universe fics. It's humourous, it's serious, and it's hot as hell as it follows the ups and downs of the Mulder-Scully dynamic from Seasons 4 to 7. I love it so much. Thank you K.

Taking Liberties (Neon Universe Vol 1) by ImAStinker

89,000 Words

Taking Liberties cover

Taking Liberties: While the X-Files are shut down, Mulder drags Scully to California to celebrate her birthday, but the case he's assigned to keeps getting in the way...

Bokor Holiday: Mulder takes it upon himself to save Scully from a voodoo curse, but ends up needing saving himself.

Code of Silence: Scully tricks Mulder into agreeing to participate in hypnotherapy to help him with his insomnia and some recurring nightmares.

Child's Play: Mulder and Scully are given a young girl to baby-sit. What they weren't told is that she 'witnessed' a murder without actually being there.

Mulder and the Stinking, Rotten, Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: Mulder experiences a definite low.

Forgotten Souls: Our heroes may have gotten in over their heads and need a little 'outside' intervention when some old enemies return. First appearance of Dr.Jay.

When Pigs Fly:
Mulder baby-sits some small relatives, much to his dismay, and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong...

Double Vision: Mulder sees and hears strange things after a near death experience from trying vainly to save a woman's life.

Oh, What A Night: On Halloween, Mulder is drafted to baby-sit some small relatives and his well-meaning efforts to take them trick or treating cause nothing but trouble. Co-written by FancyKatz

On The Edge: Mulder finds comfort from his loss with someone who shares it.  [Warning: Post-ep for "3".  Not essential reading if you prefer to deny that episode never happened.]

Cheryl was a very early MSR fanfic author, with these stories written in 1994. All of her stories take place in the same universe, which begins after Mulder and Scully were split up at the end of Season One.  Consequently there are some characters that developed a little differently in this universe, so you occasionally have to forget all you've learned of them since 1994. She's also quite determined to injure Mulder in multiple ways, which can be a lot of fun.

Annie shows up as co-author for the first time in "Oh, What A Night", and they team up to write more stories in Volume 2 and 3 together.

I did release "Devils Advocate" earlier this year, not realising that the other stories were related, so I'm re-releasing that one this week with an extra story added, along with "Neon" (Volume 3).

The image featured on the cover is a sketch by ImAStinker. I tried colourising it for the cover and it turned out a bit of a mess. The original is below. This is one of the sketches that I'll include with Neon in Volume 3.

When no one is who they seem to be, whom do you trust?

Hot Damn is right. I don't remember coming across this fic before; I only went searching for it after I found a dustjacket for it and was intrigued. I'm glad I found it. I had no idea where it was coming from or heading to, and it totally really blew me sideways. Plus the flashback was one of the hottest "all things" fics I've ever read.

I'm disappointed that I found no more of this would-be series, but even the note at the end that there was more planned was enough to allow me to smile, knowing it wasn't supposed to be the end of the story.

The dustjacket is from Livia's website so I'm assuming it's her art. Sorry if I butchered it a little in my compulsion to force all the cover art into a 3:4 ratio...

Gates of Hell cover

In the first case after her remission from cancer, Scully is forced to confront a disturbing time in her past. Ten bodies are found buried outside an abandoned hospital in Northern California, all desecrated in a way that is reminiscent of horrifying medical experiments that took place there almost fifty years ago. While navigating the complexities of a changing relationship, Scully and Mulder work to uncover a long-buried evil and hope to solve a cold case that has haunted Scully for years.

CW: violence, death, medical stuff, smut

A Sunday bonus fic just because it's a relatively recent fic from AO3 and I loved it.

Alienqueequeg sounds like she had to research an entire paper or two to write this one. The flashbacks to life with Melissa gave it extra depth as well. As a bat carer and having rabies first aid drilled into me I kept wanting to yell at my screen to flush out the wound rather than band-aid it and had to keep reminding myself that that's probably irrelevant when someone's not bitten. I can however confirm that it's hard to miss the feel of those little batty teeth when they bite... but I suppose they could just spit into an open wound. 😉   OK I'm rambling again.  Just go read it if you haven't already.

Reprise cover

Thirty years after Eugene Victor Tooms was mangled to death inside a moving escalator, several murder victims are discovered with their livers missing, ripped from their bodies without the aid of cutting tools. There are no identifiable points of entry at any of the crime scenes. Could Tooms be back?

This is a special mother's day bonus fic. Somehow aka "Jake" or this fic seems to mess with my computer somehow and I lose everything I write about it... Not only did I lost this original post, I only have a link to Jake's website because the long, involved feedback for this story and request to host some of her fics that I wrote to her vanished from my computer before I could send it. That was over 6 months ago and I haven't managed to recreate it yet.

Jake allayed so many of my fears with this story. So much was wrong with the Season 11 Finale, and I was so disappointed that Scully didn't get to finally settle down with her existing family - Mulder & William - and breathe at last. Instead, she was given another unplanned pregnancy when she had never had any agency over her fertility and hadn't recovered from the fallout from her previous one. I realise that being roughly Scully's age, I projected a lot of my own fears and desires onto her, and Jake has proven to me that Scully can take it all in her stride and enjoy this time of her life.  Mulder and Scully have moved to a new level of familiarity and banter, and this story gave me a glimpse of a future that I couldn't even have imagined in my post-S11 despair.

Although my parental c-PTSD usually has me avoiding pregnancy, baby and kidfic, very occasionally I do manage to read and enjoy them... Since I dragged out a few kidfics to consider for this Mother's Day post I've decided to share a few more of them this week.  🙂

Part of the Invariants series:

“Laws of Motion” is a sequel to “Universal Invariants” which picks up in season five with “Redux II.”  Scully barely has time to unpack before a ghost from the past sends her and Mulder down a murderous rabbit hole.

Through the magic of her storytelling Syn gives us another 'first time' in the second book of this pair. More Ethan & more investigations & more MSR. This story takes our heroes through the fifth season, complete with Emily drama & a Halloween parrot.

Part of the Invariants series:

"This is an AU story in which I play fast and loose with the first season. While I’m just as glad that Ethan got eliminated from the actual show (I don’t think he would have added much on the screen) I thought it would be fun to play out the relationship here as Scully gets dragged deeper and deeper into the X-Files."

Syntax6 is a legend, as this story and its sequel demonstrate.

Syn gives Scully's deleted boyfriend Ethan a big role in the first season as she weaves some extra cases in for Mulder and Scully to solve. This follows the agents from their first meeting to the return of Scully after her abduction. And while this is Scully/Ethan, Ethan doesn't seem to be doing it for her once she starts on the X-Files.

After Midnight cover

Mulder and Scully move through the events of season six, carefully changing from friends to lovers.

Once upon a time there was a vignette. And when the vignette was posted, there were pleas for a sequel. However, the author had no ideas for a sequel, so she let a friend write it. The sequel then inspired the original author, so she wrote more. And so it went, back and forth, until the original vignette became . . .   After Midnight.

Mulder is repentant after Two Fathers/One Son.  Scully forgives him, a little at a time.  They have to rebuild trust.  This series takes you through season six from One Son onwards.

Jenna's made an illustration for each story in the series. There are too many to attach here, but they're included in the ePub & PDF versions.

I don't know how I managed to upload the wrong version of the text file, but it's fixed now. 🙂

This is a beautifully crafted case file set after One Son, with all the angsty fallout of agents who'd been bed-mates in this fic since season 4 but never actually confessed their deep abiding love in that time. Diana is still doing her thing and Mulder still trusts her, leading to an annoyed Scully having to set him straight.

"So this was talking. They’d never tried it before. He didn’t think he liked it much."

The x-file itself is one that I couldn't for the life of me work out how they were going to get out of it, but Nascent got us all through it.

Messenger cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

In the midst of his unbearable suffering aboard the alien ship, Mulder reaches out and makes unexpected contact with an amazing ally. With the help of another old friend, the messenger sets forth. It's All Hallow's Eve and anything can happen.

This fic links together a few of the universes Windsinger was writing in.  It works as an epilogue to the All Hallow's Eve series, but it slots into the My Travels with Charley series and features Jake from her two Red Shoe Diary crossover fics, Jake's Luck and Jake and Fox Join the Club.

According to Windsinger "This is one weird story. I'm posting it as a stand- alone because I can't figure out what series to put it under. It's especially for the fans of my 'All Hallow's Eve' series which I 'finished' over two years ago. Consider this an epilogue. In fact it will probably make much more sense to them then to anyone. I'm also placing it as Chapter V of 'My Travels with Charley' series (a little something for Dana.) To make things even more confusing, Jake of my two-novel Jake series (Jake of Red Shoes Diaries) also makes an important appearance. To help out everyone -- even for those who have read everything but who need a refresher -- a synopsis of what you need to know about All Hallow's Eve, My Travels with Charley AND Jake are included at the end of chapter 2 of The Messenger. Just for fun -- try to figure it out by yourself first. I dare you....

An alternative journey following Mulder and Scully from the beginning of Season 2 to Season 5. An exploration of their changing relationship through the years and the ordeals they had to face.

This story was being sought after recently in a facebook group, and I've just recoded  Wildafox's website, so it was begging to be posted here.

Wildafox has kindly provided a new email address for feedback or to hear from old fandom friends:

45 Hegal Place cover

There’s never a dull moment when your neighbor is Special Agent Fox Mulder.

*There was something going on between these two, or else there was something not going on, when there clearly ought to be.*

I'm over editing code today so I'm linking to a fic co-written by one of my very favourite authors, who turns out to be an awesome artist as well.  It's nice to have some quality cover art to brighten up the place.  Thanks Admiralty, for allowing me to share it.

I love a third party perspective of our agents.  I often wonder what their neighbours must think. This confirms my suspicion that they can't all be murderers...

Parabiosis by Penumbra

Book Cover: Parabiosis by Penumbra

Science and Mysticism conjoin. A detailed look at season 7. (Rated R)

This story is supplemented by an NC-17 'addendum to casefile' 'Upsidaisium', which is included.  Upsidaisium is set around Gethsemane which is a bit confusing but smut is smut.

Scully dared herself to give in to this life, to call this enough - dire middle-of-the-nights with this unbelievable parabiosis arcing between them, and the daytime eternities of pretending there was nothing new.

And now when he wanted to lie with her, kissing and talking, she thought of how they would act tomorrow, of the subsequent days until they could be like this again, and she felt a certain level of bitterness at the sham of her life, bitterness he dispelled with his hands and mouth, and with his unspoken assurance that the only certain thing we have is now.

Penumbra really has a way with words. I was really surprised that I had to create a dustjacket for this one because it's such a legendary fic.  There must be one somewhere that I don't know about. I did, however, find this fanart for it by skuuri at deviantart/ankathehuman at tumblr:

Post-Closure, Mulder's search for his long-lost sister has finally come to an end. What does this mean for his relationship with Scully? And where do they go from here?

I was inspired by Echo & the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" compilation album cover when creating a dustjacket for this Killing Moon inspired fic. I'm a big fan of Admiralty's writing, and this angsty season 7 fic with its clever use of canon got my proverbial juices flowing.

It's a long weekend here for Labour Day, so I've added some bonus weekend reading. 😉

I apologise, but at 185,000 words, I haven't had a chance to re-read this one to confirm the tags, and I've guessed a few based on MoJo's general writing style. I hope I've guessed right....

Whole Truth (The) by Admiralty

95,000 Words

Whole Truth cover

Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley, a partnership of like minds. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, a partnership of perfect opposites. A journey beginning pre-XF and throughout the series exploring these relationships. (Includes Mulder, Diana, and Scully POVs)

Chaps 1-5: pre XF- Pilot
Chap 6: S2-S5
Chap 7: The End
Chap 8-9: Fight the Future/ The Beginning
Chap 10: Drive/ Triangle
Chap 11-12: Two Fathers/ One Son
Chap 13: Arcadia-Field Trip
Chap 14-17: Biogenesis arc

Although this fic examines the Mulder/Fowley relationship, it is MSR. It gives a lot of insight into the behaviour we see on screen, and adds so much depth to all of these characters.  Admiralty  even made Diana almost actually likeable. Or appreciable anyway.  It gives a whole new understanding of the motivations and events of seasons 5 to 7.

Sounding the Depths cover

Sounding the Depths: In which Mulder gets Lesson One in Regaining Your Partner’s Trust. A series of missing scenes from “Agua Mala.”

Interval: Bridging gaps and redefining partnership. A
conversation after Agua Mala and before Monday.

Do Overs: Continuing work on partnership. A series of missing
scenes from "Arcadia."

The Nature of the Beast: Mulder and Scully continue to work on their partnership in the aftermath of Two Fathers/One Son

ML takes us for an emotional ride from Two Fathers/One Son to Alpha, lovingly exploring the ups and downs of their relationship intertwined with the added emotional toll that came with each case.

Yet again, I found images post-posting. 🙂  These ones were the work of Circe Invidiosa (The Interval image is missing).

Aftermath by Zuffy

71,000 Words

Aftermath cover

This series began with the devastating effects One Son had on Mulder and Scully's partnership, and continued through their desperate attempt to understand the alien threat and the complex loyalties of Diana and other players. Parts 3 and 4 take place after Biogenesis as Scully and Mulder try to come to terms with his mysterious illness. There's a shippy end for believers...

I've been having a bit of a post One Son indulgence lately so there may be some more juicy One Son fics coming...

In this one Zuffy weaves an elaborate mytharc story around the canon from Two Fathers/One Son to Amor Fati, and challenges our beloved heroes to save each other, not knowing who they can trust.

Scully loves Mulder and his body, but her very favorite piece of his anatomy is... yes, you've guessed it! Scully loves Mulder's ass. These CAN be read as one shots but they do tie together in a certain way and you WON'T be disappointed by reading them all.

He heard you! Of course he did. You slam your mouth shut and intend to flick your eyes elsewhere. But Holy God! His dick is now right where his ass was and you don’t flick a thing.

Monika makes great use of Mulder's ass-ets in this series of stories. Some very hot UST which turns into some hot RST.

“Scully, have you ever asked yourself what kind of man would quit his job, leave his family, follow you across the country, and never contact you the entire time he was here. Never once, in ten years, did he call you, or write you, or contact you in any way. What kind of man is that, Scully?”

Daniel is a creepy stalker, and lives are at stake.  This is a wonderful thriller based around Scully's ex, set at the end of the seventh season.

Mulder Dream Series by xgirl

Book Cover: Mulder Dream Series by xgirl

The final pieces of xgirl's Crossing Lines universe.  Note, if you want to think they lived happily ever after at the end of Healing Waters, you might want to reconsider reading this.  It's a bit of a rollercoaster, but it does end up in a good place.  Xgirl does give Mulder his sister back, but it comes at a price.

Xgirl notes:

All Our Yesterdays takes place after Mulder's abduction in Requiem and the premise is that he is having these visions from his past. The first mini story is a "prickly" encounter in the immediate aftermath of The End, when emotions are raw from the fire and from the circumstances surrounding the x-files division. It is the end of that famous run during S5 in which I interpreted much chaos in their relationship, all of it unvoiced at the time. It is the part of the story that provides the requisite angst.
The second encounter is from far more innocent days: Mulder and Scully's first Christmas as partners. No ghosts or mystery gift giving here, just some early UST.
The third part is a continuation of The Unnatural. Didn't you wonder what else was said after "Shut up, Mulder, I'm playing baseball"?

The Sum of My Tomorrows
Is our present defined by our future? This story was dedicated to Mulder, who deserved better than he got in Closure.  As he lies in a state of suspended animation, Mulder gets a vision of a future that involves Samantha.  The relationship in this story is given as "MS friendship post-MSR".  This story is a direct continuation of All Our Yesterdays.  Mulder is still "wherever" he is after being taken at the end of S7.

My headcanon may differ from Xgirl at this part of Crossing Lines, but I'm much happier with her resolution of Mulder's ultimate truth than the crap we were served onscreen.  I'm yet  to find my post S7 headcanon in a story...

The final two dustjackets from xgirl:

Healing Waters Series by xgirl

56,000 Words

Book Cover: Healing Waters Series by xgirl
Part of the Crossing Lines series:

XGirl continues the Crossing Lines universe, taking Mulder and Scully from after Sixth Extinction through most of Season 7 with angst and love.  There are two R rated stories in this section - if you want to skip the smut, XGirl has PG rated versions on her website.

I: Truths Untold: In the dark hours before the early morning, the greatest truths out there may well be the unspoken ones. [PG]
II: Reconnection: A day at the beach and a story about a boy and his sandcastle spaceship. [PG]
III: Acceptance: Mulder and Scully take a significant personal step forward after a severe blow to his psyche. (Sein und Seit/Closure) [R]
IV: Just Breathe: Scully finds it difficult to deal with a side of Mulder she's never seen before in the aftermath of her adventure with CSM (En Ami). [PG]
V: Truths Revealed: Mulder and Scully realize that they have to deal with the memory of Diana if they want to move ahead. (all things) [PG]
VI: Waters Edge: The end of the road finally arrives for Mulder and Scully.[R]

XGirl's thoughts on the Post-Fight the Future X-Files (and even post Redux) very much mirror my own. It lost momentum. It tried to crush the Mulder-Scully dynamic, before going on to crush their spirits and change their beliefs.  Her website, xgirl's x-files x-perience, has an analysis of each episode, both on the original watch and a rewatch on the 20th anniversary. The Crossing Lines universe is her attempt to fix up some of the wrongs in Seasons 6 and 7.

XGirl's dustjackets, included in the epub & PDF versions.

Mulder and Scully deal with the aftermath of their little trip from "Field Trip," and confront an old case.

Today's the 20th anniversary of Field Trip's first airing in this part of the world, so I've gone with a post Field Trip casefile.  It's PG but it doesn't need the smut. It has a nice relaxed UST feel and lots of flirtines intermingled with a revisit with an old monster of the week.

Unnatural Disaster by Michaela

It's hard enough when your mistakes come back to haunt you. Harder still when you're a federal agent. Hardest yet when your partner's help is the first thing you need, but the last thing you want ...

Glorious angst.  18 months after Never Again, Ed Jerse returns to taunt Scully in this gripping tale. It's one that's hard to put down so free up some time to indulge yourself.  There is a character death, but it's not one most people would cry over. I can't remember whether it's before or after Fight the Future, so I guessed.

Continuity Series I & II by Alelou

I: A look at season 7 from all things onwards in light of the revelations in Within.

II - Per Manum Fractorum: Missing dialogue that would have explained
much that is puzzling in Per Manum.

Finally a G-rated fic!  This is very funny.  Alelou fills in some missing scenes  to make more sense of Season 8.  We could really have used Alelou's help with more than just Season 8 storylines.

As much as I liked how the two covers Tre made had very little continuity in themselves, I couldn't help but try to use a background and overlay to fill in some missing pieces myself to bring the two images together. These are the originals.

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 4

46,000 words

The final volume of the Alternative Season 8 project contains:

Vienen by Tiffany & Jo
Alone by Juliettt
Essence by Kristel St Johns
Existence by Kristel St Johns
Evolution by Kristel St Johns
Extras: About the Authors & Secrets of AS8 Special

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volumes One,   Two and Three before embarking on Volume Four.

Kristel and the AS8 crew wrap things up and tie it all in a neat little bow for us in this final installment of Alternative Season 8.  There's an extra episode that gives the original run (and any subsequent outings for that matter) more of an ending that Chris Carter could dream of.

If you haven't visited the website, each episode not only had cover art but  an animated trailer, so it's worth a visit.

The final batch of Kimberly's dustjackets

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 3

60,000 words

Volume Three contains the episodes:

Via Negativa by Jaz
Salvage by Heather
Surekill by Sam
Empedocles by Jo & Hazel
Dead Alive by Nancy
Three Words by Tracy

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volume One and Volume Two before embarking on Volume Three.

Again major improvements were made to these episodes, but the one that blew me away most was "Salvage".  It was completely replaced with a mytharc episode, which is full of action and makes the mess of mytharc so much better.  It was one of those (many) moments reading fanfic where I was gobsmacked at just how good the idea was and how it made so much sense to do it that way.  It's disappointing that it's not the creator showing this much love and respect for the characters, their development, and the stories, but fans of the show.  Thank any an all deities for fan fiction writers of this calibre.

Dustjackets created by Kimberly:

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 2

60,000 words

Volume 2 of Alternative Season 8 contains the following episodes:

PerManum by Kristel St Johns
Roadrunners by XochiLuvr
This Is Not Happening by Jo & Tracy
Patience by MaryAnn
Badlaa by Elizabeth & Alicia
Redrum by Lara Means

Note: These episodes are in a different order from the aired episodes, and should be read in the AS8 order to get the most enjoyment from them.  Please make sure you read Volume One before embarking on Volume Two.

These talented writers managed to improve all these episodes exponentially, and believe it or not actually managed to pull a decent story out of Badlaa.

The very creative Kimberly produced the following art work for these episodes:

Alternative Season 8 – Volume 1

54,500 words

Alternative Season 8 is a retelling of the episodes aired during the eighth season of The X-Files, utilizing the same starting point (the 7th-season finale, "Requiem") and the same essential story premises. We do this in hopes of demonstrating that, given the same basic storylines, there was a better way this season could have been handled, a higher road the producers could have taken. Departures from characterization will be rectified, needless and senseless continuity errors will be fixed, and bad storytelling and plot devices will be eliminated.

These are not "novelizations" of the episodes, as such, nor are they screenplays. They are written in the third person, present tense, but with a minimum of narration. This eliminates the more distracting elements of reading a screenplay, while still focusing on the dialogue and actions. Everyone reading these episodes is aware of show, the actors, and how what happens would have been portrayed. Beyond the essential elements of action and dialogue, we leave the fans to supply the rest--the spirit and emotion of the story--with their imaginations and preexisting knowledge of the characters and situations of "The X-Files."

Some text from aired eighth season episodes will be used directly, and some will be discarded or edited to suit the spirit of Alternative Season 8. The idea is not to claim that the eighth season of "The X-Files" never happened, but to demonstrate that it could have happened better.

We do this because we love the show, and we are distressed by the direction it has taken. Because we want to renew our faith in these characters who have become a part of ourselves. Because we want to make the show better, to recreate the show we loved once again.

The AS8 writers also provided a complete zip file of .txt versions which I'll attach as a download option with this volume.  There's also a link to their website in the download area.  I'm getting intermittent 404 errors so if it disappears you can view it via archive.org.

It's important to note that in addition to rewriting the episodes, the authors have re-ordered them to have the season flow better, so episodes may not be where you expect them to be.  There are 22 episodes in the Alternative Season 8, which I've split into 4 volumes.  The first contains:

Introduction: About VS8
Within by Kristel St Johns
Without by Kristel St Johns
The Gift by ga
Invocation by Jo
Medusa by Samantha Wilkinson

Alternat(iv)e Season 8 was arguably the best thing to come out of Season 8. These talented authors turned a season which was rather problematic into a much more palatable one, which unfortunately for TenThirteen really highlights  just how poor the efforts by CC et al were.  This is my replacement canon for season 8. Actually I have very little acceptance of any seasons after season 7 so it's quite a compliment to these authors that I'm willing to begrudgingly consider that it may have happened 😀

I can't remember whether they treated Mulder's ridiculous brain disease as a real thing or a hoax (or just ignored it), but I do have AS8x03 "The Gift" marked as a fic I really enjoyed, so I'm confident they fixed it somehow.

Kimberly made all the dustjackets for the series (except the consolidated volumes - please don't blame her for those!).  Original covers are included in the downloaded volumes and on the webpage.

  • CHIMES- A continuation of my "Blue Light Special" story, this one takes place over New Year's Eve and day, with Bill Scully dropping by for a guest appearance. NC-17
  • GREENHOUSE EFFECT - Mulder and Scully break free from doing background checks to go 'investigate' an exotic flower grower in Florida. Smut follows. This story line would take place after Tithonius, but before Two Fathers. And there is no such person as Diana Fowley. NC-17

  • FULL CIRCLE - Mulder and Scully celebrate the new millennium and 'one year' together. NC-17

Calendar Girl II - NOTE: THIS SERIES REMAINS INCOMPLETE.
I wish it had been finished, but I still enjoyed it knowing that I'd be left hanging. The plot is way better than CC's, and there are flashbacks to Season 7 episodes to keep the smut quota up.  You can choose whether or not to continue with CGII after CGI.

Their relationship survived the first year, but then everything changed. With one of the partners missing, the other goes on a quest of her own. Scully's new partner, Agent Nicole Larson, appeared in only one tiny segment of a story in Calendar Girl I.

Making it Personal by Brandon D Ray

A series of episode-based vignettes, covering the second half of Season 6 and tracing the evolution of Mulder & Scully's relationship during that time.

Brandon follows the canon of Season 6, particularly One Son to Biogenesis, giving it his own twist.

This follows MSR beginning with "The End" in season five until life leads me in another direction. I will attempt to be canon compliant. The continuity in the storylines always bothered me and I always thought MSR deserved more than for it to become an x-file. This is a result of that nagging, my first attempt at fanfic, and a labor of love.

Like Master Captain, this is another of those absolutely epic fics that intertwines with canon.  These authors deserve extra credit for even attempting to make canon fit with canon.  It's now finished, and has become part IV of a series/universe.  You can reach the series from the AO3 link.

Book Cover: He is the Master of His Fate, She is the Captain of Her Soul by ScullyLikesScience

The story begins during the final events of “The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati.” It then chronicles a canon-compliant progression of Mulder and Scully's relationship throughout Season 7, including the beginning of their love affair, and on through Seasons 8 & 9.

The story will conclude post-IWTB, and may or may not incorporate Season 10 & 11 storylines.

This is the first of the "current classics" I want to include here.

With works on AO3, I'll only link to the story in its original location, because it can be downloaded from there in a number of formats.  Plus, this one is still being added to.  It follows canon, so it's not a WIP as such.

She wants to feel alive. Post Never Again and onwards. Serious angst.

All available parts of the story have been combined. Warning: This series was not completed, but what's available ends in a satisfactory way.  Actually, I wasn't even aware that there were more parts than the widely available trilogy until the lovely Marina Frenzy pointed out there was an incomplete part 4.  Part 4 is only available on Mish's old personal page via the wayback machine.

I'm getting closer to fixing everything, but there may still be temporary breakages as I'm still doing long-overduebackground stuff. Thanks for being patient.
