Queen of Mist and Memory, The by Avalon

97,000 Words

Queen of Mist and Memory cover

During a trip to England, Mulder and Scully find themselves trapped in the legendary court of Camelot. As they search for a way to return to their lives, Scully finds herself forgetting who she truly is.

You know how I am when it comes to posting fics that fit with special days.... With the coronation happening in the Great Britain on the weekend, I thought it only fitting to have Mulder and Scully head to the UK to do courtly things.  I've decided to release this one early & I'll post another one on Monday.

Avalon manages to weave Mulder and Scully into Arthurian romance while they're holidaying in Wales. It takes imagination and talent to find a way to place our heroes in these completely different worlds without losing the characters we love.

I am happy to report that Avalon did achieve her dream of becoming an author whilst continuing to follow her spiritual path.  She's published a few non-fiction books, as well as a novel. I like to promote works by fanfic authors without any traces from one to the other, so if you'd like to discover for yourself, if 'You Move' over to Avalon's Gossamer stories you should be able to find the information you need. I admit that I'm intrigued.

This story took me right back to my younger days of binge-reading MZB & visiting those legendary places; experiencing the ancient energy of Glastonbury and sunrise from the Tor... I'd love to get back there some day. If it wasn't for the 24-30 hours on a plane then equivalent time getting through immigration/customs at Heathrow I'd be a lot more enthusiastic. I need to find me a wormhole to zip through. Until then, I'm going to revel in my nostalgia by posting some more UK fics this week.

Familiar Heart, A by Mish

72,000+ Words

A Familiar Heart cover

The Best Years of our Lives meets Magnificent Obsession Mulder and Scully style.  An alternative universe story, set in the 1940s.

This includes the sequel, An Unchanged Soul, which actually brings the word count up to 203,000 words.  This second story is unfinished, so it's up to you whether you embark on the extra 130,000 words knowing that there will be no ultimate resolution.

I don't usually read alternate universe stories, but I started this one without realising and had to keep reading.

This one had enough tension to keep me hooked the whole way. I've included the incomplete sequel. Mish tended to write a lot of stories at the same time, and consequently there are quite a few of hers that were never completed.  I was tossing up whether to include this story here due to the disappointment when I found the sequel wasn't complete, but the original story is worthwhile. You can decide for yourself whether to keep reading.

Truth (The) by Eponine119 & Jessica Taylor

114,000 Words

Truth cover

Mulder & Scully, undercover as a couple on a honeymoon cruise. This story riffs off just about every fanfic cliche we could think of.  We did this on purpose, and hopefully it will be obvious we wouldn't have been able to write this if we didn't love fanfic enough to have read lots and lots of stories over the past few years.  It's also very long. We hope it's amusing enough to justify both of these things - it sure cracked us up!

This is the cruise fic to end all cruise fics. Actually, this could be the tropey fanfic to end all tropey fanfics.

The first time I read this story I think I was a little impatient to get to the RST, and completely missed so much of the journey. The UST goes well past any healthy person's frustration levels, but bear with it and just try to enjoy the wild ride.

While Mulder and Scully are undercover on a honeymoon cruise for couples who postponed their wedding 3 or more times, they're subjected to Julie from the Love Boat and the indignity of many couples seminars before accidentally getting married  and becoming living legends. I don't have enough tags to do this story justice, (although admittedly I left a couple off and I have to force myself to stop typing now so I don't spoil everything in it. ) It's also funny how prescient some of their humorous suggestions are. For those of us who love a good fanfic trope, this is the holy grail.

There is a second image for this one, which I believe was made by eponine119.

The X-Libris link above left is just a little thing I'm trying to work on. How usable it is depends on whether I can find a plugin to do what I want...

Gatsby Trilogy by Nicole Perry

16,000 Words

Gatsby cover

Nicole pays homage to F Scott Fitzgerald in this AU third party observation of our beloved characters.

Thank you to Nina (xphilernj) for suggesting this one and for providing Gatsby III, which had long ago fallen off the internet.

This isn't the sort of thing I normally read, but I really enjoyed it. Nicole's writing is on point and puts you right in there amongst all the action. I had to pause after reading it to absorb it all.  Kudos to Nicole..

Hearts on the Mend Series by Bellefleur

47,000 Words

Hearts on the Mend cover

After a personal tragedy has torn them apart, Mulder and Scully wonder if their relationship is broken beyond repair.

This is an AU in that it makes no reference to Season 8 or 9, but William exists. Lots of angst. I like it to hurt 😉 But there is a happy ending.

Also, Mulder is as bad a psychologist as he is in canon.

When you finally have everything you ever wanted, that’s when you have the most to lose.

Shock! Season 9 Fic!

This is set around 6 months after Existence, as Scully returns to work after maternity leave.  Mulder hasn't had to take off so since being fired from the bureau he gets to be a stay at home dad. Mulder and Scully are married.

This is the only time I've ever approved of Scully taking Mulder's last name after their marriage, since she's doing so to stick it to Kersh, who will have to refer to her as "Agent Mulder".  I love these little details authors come up with to torment characters...

Small Things by XochiLuvr

5,000 Words

Small Things cover

One man's trash is his partner's treasure - himself. Post-Pilot smut

XochiLuvr decides to torture Mulder in a whole new way with this hump day PWP. I think that we can all agree that this one's definitely AU. Bob makes a regular appearance in the show after all...

All Hallow’s Eve series by Windsinger

192,000 Words

All Hallow's Eve cover
Part of the All Hallow's Eve series:

Driving back to Washington on Halloween evening Mulder and Scully see strange lights in the sky over rural Maryland, stop to investigate, and find themselves spending a night they will not soon forget.

This one started out fairly painlessly, but Sue pushed the angst up each year as she added a new volume and sucked us in further.  But wait, there's more! There's also a shorter story called "The Messenger" that works as an epilogue which I'll post separately as it fits into a few of the different universes that Windsinger was writing at the time.  (There's a Cliff's notes guide to all the series involved at the end of that fic so you can follow it without having to read every story. )

Idylls by Bugs

8,500 Words

Book Cover: Idylls by Bugs

It all seems to be over, but the Smoking Man has information that will change how Scully sees herself.

*epub version should be working*

I'm not a huge fan of the chaos of post-col fics, but This one's an unusual one in that the aliens came and went and things are back to 'normal'. It's difficult to categorize. I've added a few tags but left off a few as well to keep the intrigue.

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Jenna Tooms

51,000 Words

Book Cover: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Jenna Tooms

Scully comes to Mulder with a wound only he can heal.

Content Warning: non-con (past)

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was a popular album by Sarah McLachlan back in the day. This time Jenna's used each track as inspiration for a chapter.  This one could be a little implausible, but the same could be said of at least 9/10 of all excuses for smut - plus if plausibility was a problem for you you wouldn't be watching the X-Files or reading its fanfic.  There's some hot monkey loving in Jenna's story, and Mulder is certainly enthusiastic to help.

If you're looking for Ryo Sen's angstfest of the same name, you can find it here.

Eleventh Hour by Rachel Anton

36,000 words

Book Cover: Eleventh Hour by Rachel Anton

Some feelings defy the confines of time.

Rachel notes that "This story deals with time travel in a completely illogical and scientifically inaccurate way. Scully would shudder at this."  I don't know if it's possible to deal with time travel in a logical way; I can never get my head around it. 😀   Nevertheless it's a love story, with a character death that needs to be made right.  The time travel doesn't go exactly as planned, but does result in hot monkey lovin' so that's all that really matters.

Magician Series by Suzanne Bickerstaffe & Jennifer Lyons

618,000 words

Book Cover: Magician Series by Suzanne Bickerstaffe & Jennifer Lyons

An epic medieval/fantasy style x-files series by Suzanne Bickerstaffe and Jennifer Lyons or Matt Weed.

From the authors: This story is a small departure from most X-Files fanfiction. At its heart, it is a fantasy, a slightly deeper trip into the 'realm' of make-believe. Sit back, relax, suspend your disbelief, and let us tell you a tale. Enjoy!

This series includes:

  • Book 1: The Magician
  • Book 2: The Runaway
  • Book 3: The Dark Queen
  • Book 3.5: The Firebrand (by Suzanne Bickerstaffe & Matthew Weed)
  • Book 4: The Warrior Priest

This fic was requested by Kate for the same reason I hadn't put it up here - it was a PITA to collect and reformat. It's been on my to-read list forever.  Because of the length of it there was a lot of head-scratching involved as to whether I should post it in one file or split it up. It's not too bad unless you're still using 28.8k dialup.  I've tried to get the file size down, but there's a link to the website below if all else fails.

I haven't read this one yet, but it comes highly recommended.  This is the NC-17 version, and after the time it took to collect and format this one you're on your own if you want to find the non-smut version...

The following download options are available:

  • MagicianSeries-NC-17.epub         1.54mb
  • MagicianSeries-NC-17.pdf            4.35mb
  • MagicianSeries-NC-17.txt             3.40mb
  • MagicianSeries.zip  1.41mb

or you can visit Suzanne's website, a classic example of 90's Geocities glamour, which Mimic117 rescued from geocities and has kept minty fresh at theportal.mimicsmusings.com

Note: the zip file seems to sometimes come up as not found. I've renamed it to make less room for glitches, and it's definitely there.  If it comes up as a 404 error, give it another go.  thanks.

I used Theresa's beautiful illustration from mindseye.tcjahn.com as the main cover image. The other images are by Tamara Kauffman and GEK.  Unfortunately these are the only sizes I've been able to find.

There's also a map of The Realm I stumbled across:

I'll update the illustrator when I go back and find out who it is...

Quantum by Emma D

Is the grass really greener?

A big thank you to xphilernj for compiling this one.  It was originally posted to Ephemeral in around 2009 but missed being archived at Gossamer, and had to be laboriously put together from various sources following the Ephemeral glitch.   This is the first story in Emma's Quantum Universe.  Links to the other two stories, The Road Less Traveled and Falling, can be found below.

Old Growth Forest by Andrea

While following up a case of disappearing homeless, Mulder and Scully are pulled into the mystery.

***This is the revised/updated edition.***

This is the revised, extended version of Old Growth Forest, as published on FFnet.  It's a gruelling but compelling tale of Mulder and Scully trapped in the wilderness in a far distant time. In case FFnet goes belly up, I've now attached a PDF version of the story.

Patty has provided a link to the original version in the comments below. Thanks Patty.

I've also attached a PDF of the original story here, including the original cover. I think Andrea made the original version, the updated one is by AlyC.

I'm getting closer to fixing everything, but there may still be temporary breakages as I'm still doing long-overduebackground stuff. Thanks for being patient.
